We have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Illa d'Or hotel in Puerto Pollensa in Majorca. We are a couple in our 50's. We had a lovely stress free and relaxing holiday. I didn't read reviews before we booked but I have just read some reviews now, and most of them were very good reviews. The position of the hotel is excellent if you want a QUIET hoiday. There are some hotels nearby, but not right next door.
It is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the centre of town along the lovely pine walk. This walk is best done early or late in the day due to the heat, although you can walk along adjacent streets which are in more shade, and its more interesting. The pool area was on the small side and is in shade for a lot of the time, but is nice for people who don't like to sit in the sun, but thats what we go to sunny Majorca for! That said i think the pool could have been situated in a more sunnier position.
The sunbathing area was right at the waters edge and was in a lovely position over looking Pollensa bay, but wasnt really big enough and i found it a bit cramped. The hotel stated that reserving sun beds wasn't tolerated but it blatently went on and most of the sun beds were gone by 10 am.
The service from the terrace bar was excellent all day and evening. The waiters worked really hard. Drinks and snacks were a bit expensive. Our room was no. 101. NIce large room due to its position, but unfotunately right on top of a noisy air conditioning unit, but we managed to change rooms within 1/2 an hour. Our view looked directly onto back streets with some car parking and refuse bins, but this didn't bother us. We could see the sea and mountains.
The breakfasts were excellent, the evening dinners were very good, though the portions could have been a bit bigger! Also i thought the service was a bit brisk from one certain waiter! but overall service was very good.
This is a hotel which had a lot of "older people" eg people in their 80's and even 90's, so don't go there if you want an "exciting holiday" but people were very friendly. There were some nice touches from the hotel like a meal left in our room because we arrived very late. That was a lovely surprise, clean towels every day and chocs and weather forecast for the next day. I would go back to this hotel!

Room Tip: ask not to have room101!

We stayed in the Club apartments across the road from the main hotel. The location is ideal, in a quiet area of Puerto Pollensa. The apartments are very well appointed with every comfort and facility imaginable. My wife is very disabled but she found everything very easy to handle both in our apartment and the grounds around the pool. We also found the Staff very friendly and helpful. Only one negative - why don't they create a proper ramp for wheelchair access at the front gate, and a post with a latch to hold the gate open for this purpose would be a thoughtful addition. Proprietor please note!!!! All in all a superb place for a peaceful holiday, except for the lack of that ramp!!!

Room Tip: Recommend one-bedroom apartment

My husband and I have just returned from a week at the Illa d'Or. We were very impressed with the staff. However, as we were on half board, we ate at the hotel each evening. Some of the meals didn't live up to the standard of what we expected in a 4star hotel. The 'fresh' vegetables appeared to be frozen ones which had been left soaking in water. The menu contained a lot of food which was fried or described as cooked in oil.
We booked our holiday through Cosmos and wouldn't do that again. There was no rep to report any issues to so thank goodness the hotel were able to help us when needed. I would definitely return to Port de Pollenca and would also be tempted to stay at the Illa d'Or again but on a B & B basis. The breakfasts were lovely - plenty of choice and the setting by the sea was wonderful. Watching the fish eating crumbs from our plates was very entertaining!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

I think the last reviewer did have a point when they said that the hotel is slightly stuck in the past. It probably was a luxury 4 or 5 star hotel at one time, but it has modernised the communal areas recently when the bedroom also need some TLC. The hotel has obviously expanded over the years, adding more bedrooms instead of improving the existing bedrooms to cater for today's market. We stayed in what they call a 'superior' sea view room on the 4th floor, as there were no balcony rooms available at the time. We thought it was adequate, but could only be described as a 'standard' room as it was fairly small. We thought the food was very good (stayed half board) but the dining room felt like a canteen. You cannot sit outside in the lovely sea front restaurant as that has a separate a la carte menu. If you are half board and want to dine there, the hotel will give you 12 euros each off the bill, but it is quite an expensive restaurant and will probably cost you another 50 euros anyway. We just got the impression that the Illa D’or was once a luxury hotel, but had lost it's way over the years! Having said all of this we did have a lovely holiday and thought the staff were all helpful and pleasant. If you have booked your holiday at this hotel and are reading this, please do not be put off by my comments as I know you will have a great time.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms with a side sea and pool view are probably quieter as the front rooms can be a little noisy if you tend to go to bed early.

Although e don't stay in Port de Pollenca when we're on Majorca we nearly always make a trip to the Illa D'or for a lunch on the spectacular terrace by the water. The food is excellent, the portions more than generous and the location wonderful. Well worth splashing out a bit if you're nearby.
