This hotel does not deserve its 4 stars - I would give it barely 3.Rooms vary hugely from those with only Skylights, those with views of brick walls to those,at the front with huge balconies ,sun loungers and sea views. Rooms are small and storage space is limited. A safe is provided at no cost which is a good idea but still there are no tea making facilities whilst I wonder how many guests make use of the expensive Room Mini Bar.Towels were very poor and only superficial room cleaning took place Breakfasts were O K and service hours excellent, but they still can't make decent tea - and this is a hotel which has a lot of British guests. The 3 course dinner was poor and menu items were from the 1970s - Fruit Juice as a Starter and Ice Cream as a sweet.Wine on sale in a local shop at £3 was offered at £12 so many guests ordered a bottle and made it last 2 or 3 nights Waiters take your order for all 3 courses at the start of the meal which often results in main courses waiting on side tables and so getting cool before you get served.Dirty plates are sometimes left on side tables. The hotel is in a wonderful setting but the beach to the front is very small and lunching at the outside bar expensive. The pool is unheated and often in the shade because of its position at the side of the hotel At the rear of the hotel, across a quiet street ,are appartments owned by the hotel with a delightful pool in the garden BUT hotel guests are not allowed to use it. These appartments have recentley been modernised so next time I will stay in one of these and eat in a choice of the many excellent restaurans in the town

I had always liked the look of the Illa D'or but what a disappointment it was when I stayed there with my Cousin.
On arrival at 8:30.p.m. we were shown to a Twin room which I can only describe as a "cell". It was a small austere room with one window which was so high up it was impossible to see through, we could not envisage staying there for eight nights without even being able to look outside.
We returned to reception to explain the situation, and were informed the hotel was full and no other rooms were available. The reception staff were very unhelpful so I asked to see the Manager who suggested we had our Dinner and he would see what he could do. After dinner were informed another room with a balcony and side sea view would be available but would cost an extra 157 euros for the stay. We accepted this room and agreed to pay the extra. At that time another couple were in reception complaining about the room they had been given! Throughout our stay we saw quite a number of guests asking to change room and other guests moving their belongings to different rooms!
We stayed in this room for three nights when we found water leaking through the Bathroom ceiling onto the tiled floor which was quite dangerous. The patio door didn't lock in this room either. I contacted Reception and after waiting half an hour (we were waiting to go to bed) I went down to Reception to ask to be moved. Surprise surprise the room next door was empty and we transferred there.
The rooms were reasonably clean, but the dressing table and bedside tables were never dusted, in fact nothing was moved and dirty glasses were not washed and returned to the mini bar (I would say that I usually wash the glasses myself, but I didn't because I wanted to see if the maid would do them). The cistern top in the Bathroom was dirty, it was only wiped over and not washed clean, the standard of cleanliness was poor.
The Lounges were really nice, new modern furniture and decoration and were clean. I presumed the Hotel was No Smoking, however, there was a gentleman smoking a pipe in one of the Lounges every night..
The Dining Room was bright and clean and the staff there were very friendly. The Breakfast was good and went on until 10:45. However the Dinner was very poor for a four star hotel. There were three courses (you had to order the pudding with the starter and main course which I found very unusual). There was a salad bar but that was an option to either the starter or main course. The food was plated up and was served very quickly - too quickly there was no lingering over the meal! I do not think the food was 4 star I did not like the way the dishes were cleared away in the Dining Room by being stacked on trollies and trundeled noisily away.
The situation of the Hotel was beautiful the front terrace very pretty, there is not enough space outside for sun beds. Beachtowels are obtained from Reception with a deposit of 10 euros, and are able to be exchanged there for clean ones.
The swimming pool was freezing and no drinks service available there. The indoor pool was very warm as was the jacuzzi.
When we left we were not helped to take our luggage outside, and none of the Reception asked if we had enjoyed our holiday as indeed they did not welcome us on our arrival.
I am used to visiting the Hotel Bon Sol in Illetas which is also a four star hotel and superior in every way - how the Illa D'or can be compared to the Bon Sol I do not know.
I would not recommend the Illa D'or and would never stay there again.
Anyone thinking of a holiday on the beautiful island of Mallorca should look at the Bon Sol and I am looking forward to my holiday there in June.

Having found this hotel on line whilst in the resort and planning to escape from the truly horrible apartment our agent had landed us in after an overbooking nightmare, it turned into one of the loveliest holidays we have taken.
From the first moment when we stepped in the door, the service was impeccable, friendy and discrete.
We had a superior room, which was small, but the immense balcony facing the bay more than made up for this and it was worth the extra money.
We spent most of our time on the sunloungers on the hotel patio, which was next to the tiny beach . This area was great for sunbathing, but also had trees that provided a welcome afternoon shade . It did get busy and loungers were at a premium , but staff managed this with assurance and diplomacy . There were usually plenty of tables available in the area around the bar as an alternative. On only one occassion did we have to withdraw to the balcony .There is also a small hotel beach.
The hotel is situated on a promenade which stretches all the way around they bay, so it is a pleasant and interesting 20 minute walk into the town.
We ate breakfast in the open air restaurant alongside the sea , watching the fish swimming next to us. The breakfast was a good quality, substantial and varied buffet.
We would thoroughly recommend this hotel to couples and families with older teenagers who are not seeking childcare or on site entertainment. The other guests were a mix of Spanish, French, German and British. Given that is was high season, there was never a point where we felt we had to wait for service or were crowded .
Overall, I would be happy to recommend this hotel to anyone who values excellent service and beautiful surroundings over poolside activities and an all you can eat buffet dinner . trying to find something similar on a different island has shown what fantastic value for money the Illa D'or provides and we will be returning in the future.

Having read some earlier reviews we weren't expecting a decent room, service or food but have now come to the conclusion that many people who write a review have an axe to grind and are the complaing kind.
We have high standards and seek out the best hotels and restaurants and rest assured the Ila d'Or is high standard without any shadow of doubt. We paid in advance for a room with a sea view and were pleased with a standard central 4th floor room with a beautiful vista over the bay. It was well furnished and spotlessly clean, with a welcome basket of fruit and a well stocked mini bar (but no tea and coffee making). The TV had BBC1&2 and a hotel film channel. A balcony would have been a bonus but we didn't expect one and it wasn't necessary as we could easily sit or lie out immediately in front of the hotel and on the seafront. Even at the end of October it was warm enough to swim in the sea and dine outside on the seafront at lunch time and one breakfast time (which was a real treat watching the fish in the sea including an octopus)).
There was a vast and varied buffet spread for breakfast with nice hot coffee and endless freshly squeezed orange juice. It catered for all tastes, including local Mallorcan specialities. The 4 course dinners provided a good choice - there was always a fish dish and a carvery selection and good helpings. It bore no resemblance to my school dinners (which were in fact excellent). Especially impressive was the attentive and personal service to everyone and there was never significant waiting for anybody. We were fearing poor service having read reviews and we made sure we were in the dining room for 7.30 on the first night, but there was no need. It may be that we were there at a quieter time and the terrace restaurant wasn't open, but we have nothing but praise for the attentive barmen and restaurant staff and this was our first visit so we didn't pull any special favours.
The place is beautifully furnished with lots of modern artworks, antiques and loads of big new sofas in the lounges. What really makes it special though is the quiet setting and the fabulous views across the bay and the little beach and terrace in front.
There was some good entertainment in the lounge bar including an afternoon pianist, a jazz group, Spanish dancing and a free trip to a concert in a church in Pollensa whilst we were there.
All in all an excellent hotel.
If I had to criticise anything it would only be to say the indoor pool is very small indeed and hardly possible to swim in; there's no gym and the man at reception had so little to say when we left it seemed like he was very unthankful for our custom and we had to try and make pleasant conversation as he thrust our bill at us with no explanation of the contents.
Clearly it attracts many regulars and particularly at this time an older crowd and we can well see why as it surely is very high class.

We returned to the Illa d'Or after an absence of eight years. Not much has changed in the intervening period other than a lick of paint in the bedrooms. However, it was like meeting an old friend after an absence of time. The position of the Hotel is superb, the staff are wonderful, and there can be few more relaxing places to pass a few days. The Illa d'or seems to cater very much for middle aged and retired Brits (three tiered cake stands for afternoon tea being very much in evidence) and the place exudes an almost colonial atmosphere (it has been in business since 1929)
There will certainly be downsides. Our room was classed as "superior." The very basic furnishings certainly bely any pretensions to such a description, but apparently, all rooms with a sea view are described as such. Reading other review comments, the more basic rooms, particularly on the upper floors, really do appear to be basic.
The sea is accessed directly in front of the Hotel, across the sun lounger and bar area, and there is also a very nice outdoor swimming pool (and apparently an indoor one too)
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and only dined in the Hotel restaurant on our last night when it was raining. Past experience when we stayed on demi pension had shown that the food was indifferent, but our last dinner was a very pleasant surprise, and of excellent quality. The terrace restaurant on the edge of the sea is quite lovely, with quality of food and service to match.
In summary, the place is not perfect, but does have a warmth and charm all of its own, as witnessed by the number of guests who return year after year. As a place to chill out for a week, despite its shortcomings , it takes some beating.
