“Lovely hotel apartments in wonderful setting”
Reviewed 19 September 2010

We booked a week in September 2010 at the Club Illa D'or apartments which are just behind the hotel. These have recently been refurbished and are excellent. Unfortunately we had booked with the Travel Club of Upminster who went into Adminstration the day we arrived so we had to pay the hotel direct - again ! Not a good start. We were not alone - several couples had the same experience.
The apartments are smart, modern, well equipped in lovely grounds with a good size pool. They are not cheap and the studio apartments are just too small even for a couple - we were getting cabin fever after a week !. Think student bed sit size. Go for the one bedroom apartment if you can afford it !. Avoid room 704 if you hate talking to fellow guests - its right by the door on the ground floor. We enjoyed it & made heaps of friends, helped by the common bond of a travel company gone bust.
Dont stay here if you dislike walking - its right on the edge of town towards Formentor but reached by the very pretty bayside Pine Walk. There is a mini supermarket nearby - larger shops are available in the town but its a long hike back with a big shopping bag. Parking can be a hassle if you have a car - its a narrow road and tour buses pick up & drop off at the hotel. On the plus side, public transport in Pollensa has improved no end in the last few years & you can get to most places on the island without a car. There are basic bikes to hire at the hotel.
The apartments are quiet & there is plenty of support from the excellent hotel staff across the road - apartment guests can use the hotel facilities & eat in the hotel ( at a cost !). The hotel is lovely, 1929 vintage, very genteel with nice public areas and a pretty dining room. However it is populated by people who have been coming for many years & who think they own the place. The apartments are much less stuffy and the rooms are better !

Four star this is categorically not. I appreciate that in Europe you should not expect the same standard of rooms as in the UK but frankly I would hesitate to award the Illa D'or three stars. Oh, the setting is fabulous and there is obviously a great deal to be said for eating breakfast against the stunning backdrop of Pollensa Bay while the little fish dart about next to your table. The bar is also a spectacular place to spend an evening as the sun sets. But... don't expect anything like luxury as soon as you reach your room. In fact, the four-star experience ends as you check in, as no help is offered with suitcases. I'm not sure if the hotel actually has a porter - certainly never saw one throughout our stay, and given that a lot of guests are elderly this must sometimes be a problem.

The disappointments continue as you enter your room - to be greeted by decor that is very much on the tired side. A coloured bathroom suite - haven't seen one of those in a hotel for at least ten years. Bedding that was close to drawing its old age pension. Two grubby little mats on each side of the bed (why mats in any case, in a hot country?) Two cheap white plastic chairs on the balcony, flanking a rusty little table. And this was a superior room - I dread to think what the standard rooms must be like. On the plus side, the memory foam bed was extremely comfortable, the towels were large, white and newer than the bedding and it was pretty clean.

But the disappointments went on. Is it really necessary to be charged a 10E deposit (per towel) to use towels by the pool? Does the dining room really have to display signs warning guests of dire consequences if they 'remove food items' and take them elsewhere? I felt as if I were at Butlins, circa 1978. The much-lauded breakfast buffet was OK - a good selection of pastries and cooked choices, though the Spanish doughnuts were like bullets (they need to be freshly cooked, not sat on a buffet bar for an hour). The fruit salad was tinned, not fresh. And the coffee was undrinkable - in Spain, where I had thought it was impossible to get a bad cup of coffee.

Illa d'Or has a split personality - the setting and bar area are undoubtedly four star, but the rest - sadly not. I guess they are having to work to the budgets demanded by the big tour operators and as a result this once-lovely hotel has lost nearly all the glamour and opulence it once offered. What a shame.

We stayed in this hotel in August this year while attending a wedding in the area. Over all we found the hotel to be very disappointing for the money we were paying. Our bedroom was horrible with very little natural light and a very uncomfortable bed. It was located just at the stairwell so was extreamely noise at all times, this however was not helped by the chambermaid starting work at 7AM and ignored "do not disturb" signs!!! I ask you... do management not realise that the majority of their guests are on HOLIDAY! The area around the pool and by the sea is very small and so getting a sun bed can be difficult. If you are lucky enough to get a sunbed by the sea I certainly hope you are strong, as I had to lift the sunbeds from the pile provided and they are quiet heavy. Finally we found the staff very rude and unaccommodating. While I would recommend the area as a beautiful place to visit I would not recommend this hotel and seeing as it is supposed to be the best hotel in the village I shudder to think what the others are like!

A fantastic hotel in a great location. Breakfasts fantastic, evening meals very good; service outstanding. The only drawback is that the tables in the restaurant are too closely together and that the resort attracts mainly tabloid readers rather than quality newspaper readers and I know that sounds a bit snobbish! A great stay.

We stayed here for a week in August 2010 having been to Puerto De Soller for our first week. We absolutely loved these apartments, contemporary, stylish, beautiful, yes they are expensive, but there is the saying you get what you pay for. Everything about this place was lovely, so much so we are going back next year!

The pool is lovely, not too busy as the beach is only a stones throw, on the first day it was bliss, no towels on beds, heaven, so no worries on where to plonk yourself, well not until 4 days into the holidays when of course you always get one and then that set others off, even though there was really no need to reserve as there were plenty of beds....the temptation was to throw the towels into the pool, but of course, we are far too polite to do that!

Can't wait to go back.

Will keep this short and sweet. Always stay here when destination of choice is Majorca. Everything is to a very high standard and service is top notch.

Alot of supposed superior hotels could learn from this establishment. If there are gripes, and they are only small ones the gym is a little long in the tooth the wifi patchy and whilst the location is idylic the distance from the main of the town is a reasonable walk.

This is genuinely a EXCELLENT choice of destination!

Spent a week at the hotel in July 2010. This is what Spain was like before they coverd it in concrete. The hotel is well situated on the sea front with a very relaxing atmosphere .
The staff were excellent and the service efficient. We only stayed bed and breakfast ; the breakfast was very good. You could have a full fry , continental or cereal.
We had one superior room with a side sea view and a standard with a view to the rear. The rooms were clean and of a good size both with balconies. I WILL BE BACK.
