June 17th 2014. Travelled with Thomas Cook Holidays.
The TC flight from Gatwick and transfers in Majorca were on time and with no hassle.
Having been to Puerto Pollensa many times before, I'd often looked at the Miramar Hotel and thought I'd like to stay there – but it had always been fully booked, so this time, I booked early.
POSITIVES: On arrival at the hotel, 2 members of staff welcomed us as the bus pulled in and took our luggage to check-in. Anthoni then took our bags and showed us to our room. We booked a sea-view room (we were allocated room 303) and the view was perfect, with a small balcony with a table and 2 chairs which overlooked the Pine Walk (a pedistrianised promenade), marina and beach with hills on the far side of the bay. The room was comfortable, clean and average size. The beds were firm but also comfortable and the bathroom was well appointed with a range of toiletries and a hair dryer. Some rooms on the floors below/above had larger terraces for €10 extra per night.
The vast majority of guests at the Miramar are British retired couples – the sort of age range who like their hotels with character and comfort. The lounges with large sofas and TV/computers and the dining room were quietly elegant. Breakfast was taken in this dining room with a wide range of hot and cold offerings – with delicious coffee or tea. Dinner is taken outside the hotel by the pedestrianised Pine Walk. You would choose from an a là carte menu or the set menu which costs €24 which includes a choice of a generous glass of red, rose or white wine, bread and butter, 3 courses (a selection of about 3 or 4 choices per course) with a waiter service. It was nice to sit there in the cool of the evening watching people parade by. If you book dinner for the whole week, there is a 10% discount. We tried other restaurants along the Pine Walk which appeared to offer better value options – but they always turned out to be more expensive than the Miramar for dinner, with all the add-ons!
To save on the valued airline weight allowance, you can rent beach towels, dressing gowns and slippers.
NEGATIVES: It amused us to sit on our balcony at 7am and watch guests scurrying across Pine Walk to the hotels sun bathing area to adopt the Germanic habit of reserving your lounger and parasol. OK! it gets hot down there and you do need shade at some point BUT most of them never put their parasol up until later in the afternoon and they go mad if you ask to use it while they are not.
If I was being 'picky', I could mention the frayed, threadbare bedside mat or the air conditioning remote which was smashed and held together with tape or the air conditioning which didn't work because of the sensors on the balcony doors not connecting to make a circuit for the system to work – BUT a quick phone call down to reception brought the wonderful Anthoni up to sort things out.
All in all – it's a lovely, clean hotel with friendly, helpful staff which we will definitely visit again. Some guests we spoke to had be going there for 40 years or more. What more recommendation do you need . . . .
