This was our third stay in the Sleeping Car and we will definetly come back. The compartments, kitchen, dining room, and the bathrooms are spotless clean and very well looked after. Having breakfast in the beautiful 50ies dining area feels like a little trip back in time. We always meet very nice travellers here, and enjoy chatting with them. It is very quiet at night, so one can enjoy a good night sleep here.

My boyfriend and I had booked a 2 nyt stay in the sleeping car so that we could see all the sights and do a bit of walking. I have stayed before when I was a child and loved it. The place hadn't change much however it was manky and really needed a good clean, bins hadn't been emptied, dishes where dirty in the cupboards and there was cob webs and dust everywhere, and the rooms where not much better. When we checked in we were told we had bunk beds which was fine but did ask if the sleeping car was empty May we take the double room in the sleeping car on the second night, the lady at reception in the station was lovely and said it shouldn't be a problem, that clearly wasn't the case as on the second night the owner arrived at 11.30pm with another couple, by this point we had assumed no one else was coming and took the double room. Clearly this man was very unhappy and felt it necessary to be rude to my boyfriend, I admit I lost the plot a little and was rather rude myself but I will NEVER be back, we had to leave at midnight as we felt so uncomfortable staying again. Such a shame. And a note to the owner: if all the beds are wet because your staff left the windows open on the train do not be as rude to as expect your guests to dry them out for you!

We stayed at the sleeping car on a quiet November weekend when the other hotels and things in the area were all closed. Thankfully the railway car stays open all year. It was my son's 4th birthday and being a bit of a train nut we thought he'd enjoy sleeping in the old railway car. It is amazing! Old and full of character, but obviously loved by the owners and very clean. We found the family room to be very comfortable. Compact, certainly, but we did manage somehow to squeeze a travel cot into the floorspace, leaving the two single bunks for our boys and the separate double bed for us.

In the evening we took the train (16.55) up the line one stop to Lochailort Inn and then back (18.47) in time for wee one's beds. The Inn was really great too: friendly locals, tasty reasonably priced food, an open fire and toys for the kids to play with.

When we returned and the kids were in bed we enjoyed using the fast kettle to make endless cups of tea while reading books in the kitchen/lounge bit of the carriage and having a good chat with another guest who had been out cycling all day. The carriage is heated, but in winter some of the common areas can get a bit chilly as I guess they didn't put a lot (any?) insulation into these things. Probably means that sound travels a bit too, but as it only sleeps 10 people there is unlikely to be too much noise. We all slept like logs and were off at the crack of dawn next day to explore the beaches around Arisaig.

The museum is great for families too (visited it before), there is a new path to walk to see the famous viaduct (as seen in the Harry Potter films) ... and we heard that the owner is busy building a miniature railway!!

All in all, a place to be recommended for anyone who loves something different. We loved it!!

Room Tip: Family room is good for 4.

The train carriage hotel idea is fantastic and the station and the carriage itself is full of old world charm. Great to spend a night in to experience it but wouldn't want to spend many nights stay as rooms as small (naturally as sleeping coupes) and beds not as comfortable as a proper bed (but again that is to be expected for the experience). There is a decent kitchen with facilities and somewhere to eat, as well as basic shower/toilet. We were there when the steam train came through the following day which was excellent.

This is a unique stay experience but you should know what you're in for.

Since you will be in the highlands mostly for walks, it isn't the place place to come back to for tired legs and an aching body.

However I have to say that the staff are very very helpful and hats off to them for everything.

I would recommend staying here as a single person or book the bigger cabin if you are a couple.

Staying in a converted railway car was great fun, with the family bunk room and other family in the other rooms it was really good fun, a lovely view and something outside the norm of a hotel or hostel, thoroughly recommend this place and its a good price, only minus point is the walls are paper thin, some if the kids are awake in another room, you are too!

Room Tip: If you can, book the whole place out

What a wonderful, quirky unusual place to stay. The sleeper car comes with five sleeping bunks. Don't be expecting a massive room they are on a train carriage. Then you get a shower room a separate w.c and a two sink area. At the other end of the carriage there is a well equipped kitchen and then a dining/seating area.
The view is to die for!!!! You look out in the morning with a view of mountains, it's stunning! Out of the other window you get the station with the occasional train that passes through. Walk down the track and you see a beautiful viaduct where Harry potter was filmed.
If you love walking there are some great walks around. There is a local pub that has fantastic food too.
I took a small plug in heater with me after reading the other reviews and I did use it later on at nights when sitting in the seating area.
Don't be expecting 5* accomdation, this is not what it's supposed to be, it's more shabby chic really.
I found I had a magical relaxing time here and I'm already planning to return soon.
