“Lovely Hotel and Beautiful Surroundings”
Reviewed 6 November 2013

I did not stay at the Hotel Union Oye but rather had soup, pancakes and tea in the beautiful dining room. I toured all of the wonderful rooms and marveled at the furnishings and the walk back in history that this visit provided. The hotel was a stop during my "Taste of Norway" excursion from the Hurtigruten MS Finnmarken. The architecture, decorations and furnishings all were marvelous and provided a glimpse into the beauty that greeted travelers who were fortunate enough to stay at such a charming and unique place. The staff I had occasion to meet were very friendly, eager to help and proud of their wonderful hotel. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking. Wish I could have stayed in this grand place.

A rare and unusual hotel, each bedroom, which are named after members of the norwegian royal family or a famous previous occupant is decorated in an individual and traditional style, ours had a large comfortable bed and a great view , beware bedroom number 7 is supposed to be haunted! the bathroom was an unusual mix of traditional sink and wet room not so sure! The larger main salons are very heavily furnished but a bit lacking in atmosphere. The staff are all charming and friendly, dinner was a grand 4 course affair and was delicious, breakfast was a great buffet.
The drive through the valley to the hotel is spectacular and the surrounding area is as peaceful and as stunning a place as you could ever wish to visit.

If your looking for the Hyatt and the modern amenities of a 5 star American hotel this may not be for you. If you are a lover of history, appreciate originality, beauty, first class service and a one of a kind venue that offers spectacular views that are unmatched anywhere else in the world, this would be a mandatory trip. We stayed in Kaiser Wilhelm's suite and found it to be comfortable and rich with history, right down to the claw foot tub from his famous steamship he used to visit his favorite place in the world. The staff were attentive, the food was spectacular, the surroundings unsurpassed and the décor period correct and tasteful. Spending evenings next to the fireplace in the cozy lounge or sitting with a wool blanket on the front porch with the spectacular view of the waterfall and surrounding peaks always a stones throw away was beyond description. The drive from the Union Oye to the neighboring town was so incredible I must return to make sure what I saw was real and I wasn't just dreaming. This is the 43rd country for me and I have been to most continents..... Northern Norway in the RAIN crushes them all - hands down the most beautiful and peaceful place I have found on planet earth.

We stayed one night and were not impressed. The prices were high even for Norway. On the positive side it is a beautiful setting but the hotel is run down, plumbing, bedding. Unfortunately the weather had been warm for a few days which caused the flies to hatch. Our room was inundated with dozens of flies. As much as we tried we could not get rid of the flies. Horrible. We had both dinner and breakfast which were both acceptable if not a bit stilted. We would probably not stay here again.

Context: Stayed here for three nights in June with family in the Blue Room.

Review: A truly one of a kind property, rich in history and well kept. The interior has been tastefully restored and furnished with period decoration (think poster beds, old photographs, lace curtains and plush armchairs). The larger rooms - those that once housed famous people - are even more charming; these rooms typically contain curios, trinkets and mementos - all the little things that make history so real. Yes, the bathtub used by Kaiser Wilhelm II is still there; yes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's pipe can be seen in his room. There's story telling every evening (in Norwegian only :D sorry folks), when you get to learn about the ghost in the Blue Room, or the story of Karen Blixen's boots. Call it a marketing gimmick if you will, but hey, it's a thoroughly enjoyable one!

Staff service goes beyond efficient; everyone from the receptionist to the waitstaff was friendly and seemed to genuinely wish that you enjoy your stay. The hotel also offers free kayaks (absolutely lovely!!), bikes (tyres a little flat), and fishing rods (missing during my stay) for guest use. Dinner at the restaurant was quite possibly one of the best we had outside Oslo.

Verdict: Must stay! Definitely worth a detour for a couple of nights.

Side note: do not expect a room phone or a TV; anyway, you shouldn't be looking for such things in a hotel that lights candles every night!

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms on the second floor. They're larger, more lavishly furnished, and more pleasan...

After a week in Norway going through the fjords by car ( much more scenic than by boat and not as cold ! ) we experienced three " historic hotels " the Ullensvang, the Kviknes and the Union. Of the three , the Union is the only one which is a real historic hotel. The Ullensvang is very good , has existed for years but is a brand new building. The Kviknes must have been nice 100 years ago but they have ruined it ! The Union is true, late 19th century, full of charm, small enough not to attract large bus groups and has rooms each decorated very differently. We had the Karen Blixen room, with nice photos of Karen, her staff , her coffee farm near Nairobi ( Remember Out of Africa ? ) and a few interesting manuscripts, one dated August 1937 , by Jomo Kenyatta who later became the first President of Kenya wishing Karen Blixen well. I lived nine years in Nairobi , thus my happines to be in that room where Karen Blixen spent many vacations ages ago.
The common rooms downstairs are full of true old lovely original furniture. So is the dining room where we had a very nice a la carte dinner with good wines. Breakfast in the same room is equally nice. The bread is great !
The manager and staff are all lovely and efficient .
Some say it is in the middle of nowhere ! Simply not true. It would be an ideal place for a trip on
the Geirander fjord ( UNESCO World Heritage ) taking the ferry from Helleslit , 18 kms from the
hotel.
Stay there !

We came down from the mountain, cold, wet to the bone and tired, and went to the hotel to ask if they knew how to get to my hometown, Ålesund. We had looked at possibilities with buses but it would take some time... Mariann, the director of the hotel was supernice and while she arranged a ride with their taxiboat for us, she enthusiastically offered us to help ourselves to some coffee and tea and sit down by the fireplace and warm ourselves. An amazing welcome considering how fancy the hotel is and the state we were in.. We had been in the mountain for three days without showering and it had been raining all the way down. While we enjoyed all the "fanciness" around us, warm coffee and the heat from the fireplace, a woman asked if we would like some applecake with icecream. The charge would just be added to the boat ticket. The cake was heavenly :) Then Mariann came by again with her big smile and said the cake was on the house :D

Then there actually came some people with the boat who were there to give Mariann an award. She had been nominated to and named "best representative of good service in the service profession". Wow, how well deserved that was! I am definately going back there for an actual stay. All the rooms are unique and looks like they're taken straight out of the aristocratic 1800s. Beautiful.

Room Tip: Each room is unique and is named after famous visitiors, the available ones are open so you can look...
