“Some problems”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2014

Stayed here as part of a large group for three nights. The staff were friendly, but had a hard job coping with the large influx of guests.

Good points
A clean room and bathroom, but see below
Good lift to the first floor, but steps to negotiate to some rooms

Not so good points
I had been booked for a twin room, but when I went to the room, it had a double bed. Now I do t mind sharing a room with someone I don't know too well, but I don't want to share a bed! Reception firstly said that was what had been booked, but when I insisted that was not the case, they rechecked and sure enough I was right. They then said they could do nothing as they did not have enough single bedding! At this point, my colleague arrived and she too said this was not acceptable. After much huffing and puffing, my colleague was given a different double room for one night, but she would have to move back in with me the next day, but the beds would be made up as twins. Problem solved, but should not have happened in the first place.

Our room was not cleaned or made up on the Sunday. Towels left in the bath for changing were hung back up and those on the rail were left untouched. Beds not remade. Bins were emptied. Tea and coffee were replenished, but incidentally they were not very nice!

Scaffolding outside our window, but thankfully, no workmen!

Ok breakfast, but hot food left too long, cold toast and not enough butter. No teaspoons on our table, and when asked staff for one, I was told to take one from another table as they did not have enough! Very slow at clearing dirty plates

Our first evening meal took two hours to serve and the food was ok, but not very hot. Other meals served buffet style and were better, but not top quality?

The outside of the hotel looks very shabby with cracked render and water stains. There is so e outside seating to enjoy the dun, but very limited

The hotel could do with a lounge area for other residents when there are weddings in progress. There was nowhere to sit of an evening other than in the dining area.

Having said the above, the hotel is in a good location midway between Gloucester and
Cheltenham with bus stops outside with a ten minute service.

Would I stay again? Probably not. Others in the same event were at the Thistle hotel up the road and that looked much nicer!

This is the 3rd time we have stayed here. Caroline gave us a lovely room (228) when I booked direct on the phone.
Check in by Vicki was extremely quick and efficient. Our room was on the side of the hotel, so away from any road noise and on the top floor.
Initially we had a problem connecting to wifi, but Vicki on reception sorted this for us and we soon were able to use the complimentary wifi.
Breakfast is really good, fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, prunes and grapefruit (tinned) fruit juices, croissants, dried fruits, FULL English etc. The only things that let the breakfast service down was that we did have to ask for toast and our dirty plates, (although the male waiter saw them,) were left on the table and were mounting up, so I had to move them to a vacant table to give us more space!)
All in all though we would return. (Hopefully the waiter will have a bit more training in clearing tables and offering us more tea and toast!!!!!)

Just spent a second overnight stay having been more than satisfied with our previous visit a year ago. Check in staff made us welcome and our room was comfortable and clean. Enjoyed burgers in the restaurant in the evening and staff were friendly and efficient. The outside of the hotel is in the process of being re-decorated. Hotel is well located for short drive into town centre and access to M5/ A40.

We booked this hotel as it was very close to the venue we were attending on the evening.

ARRIVAL
On arrival, plenty of parking and looked clean & "Acceptable" in appearance

Check in was straightforward, pleasant lady member of staff was very good (even though her colleague was chatting on his mobile phone which was personal by the not hard to overhear conversation content revealed!)

Obvious access to the first floor by the lift (must have missed the stairs)

Clean and tidy foyer/reception. Lift was spotless and no stupid unnecessary signs plastered around!

Corridors all seemed clean and tidy, well lit.

THE ROOM

The GOOD bits!

Well appointed and clean
Good looking room too!
Nice bed
Extra Pillows...Hoooorrrrrray!!!!!
FREE AND EXCELLENT WI-FI!!

The Not so good bits
The coffee sachets are miserly and taste awful. (only 2 provided)
No complimentary still and sparkling water (unless you go to reception) yet this is an industry standard to provide this simple complimentary item? This is a first in 10 years!
Why put the second towel set under the luggage top ? They should be in the bathroom?

THE BATHROOM
Nice bathroom, if not slightly tired in appearance with the extract fan area clearly showing ceiling water damage with the fan not working!
Rather scruffy maintenance access hatch in the ceiling that would benefit form a cheap white lick of paint (as well as the water staining and a new fan)
The sink unit had two access panels on it that had 4 x screws in each, it would have been nice to see the screws covered by little plastic caps.

In use the bathroom functioned well and I guess that is why it's there.

LATE NIGHT AT THE BAR FOR A DRINK
Pleasant staff running the bar... Thank you!

SLEEP
Perfect bed, perfect sleep, however the next rooms bathroom extract fan or aircon unit was very noisy ..

Oh and you could hear the next room going for a P....... (sorry but either that or it was a well directed tap!)

BREAKFAST

Nice staff (AGAIN)!!

Buffet style full English
Toast
Coffee
Orange etc
Selection of usual cereals

Breakfast not so good bits.
Not enough butter on the table and tasted very bland
Orange tasted watery?

Overall the breakfast was good

DEPARTURE
Well dropped off the key, not a word was said!

OTHER OBSERVATIONS
We had parked the car at the back of the hotel when we returned after attending our nights entertainment so the back of our room (outside) was not obvious.
Remember the water damage round the bathroom extract fan??
Well looking from the car park to the back of the hotel (where our room was) large areas of rear wall render is completely missing, looked like there's a flat roof too above where our room was.
In fact right across the rear of the hotel appears to have suffered a lot o render damage.
Some attempts are clearly being made to rectify the problem. I wish them well.

On exit from the rear car park, the way out is 4 inches deep in water, work to do there too.

OVERALL VERDICT
This is despite my comments above, a good place to stay, I would have no hesitation in staying here again. But the room I stayed in compared to other places have stayed in the most recent of times, £60 -£70.00 would suffice as long as there's good coffee & complimentary water in the room 1 x still 1 x sparkling.
I thought the staff were friendly and all seemed happy doing what they were doing.

Cheltenham is a lovely city & a great place to visit.

I really hoe the hotel sorts the render issues at the back, it really lets down the impression of the great building that it is.

Room Tip: The rooms are all well appointed, however I cannot advise fully on the "Quietness" or view...

We experienced Very attentive staff, top marks to them - having made my booking through late rooms and been given a twin instead of a double, we got an immediate no-quibble upgrade to a suite - very pleased. Breakfast was top notch, and the quality of the restaurant and its decor was as one would expect. A definite recommend.

Stopped at the hotel after booking on BW website. On arrival met by receptionist who I had to ask about Internet time of meals and told her I didn't want a paper. Was given room 116 which was cold due to air conditioning not working correctly went back to reception and was unmanned pressed the buzzer nothing but was nice to see all the staff on cctv stood around gossiping. Room was modern and nicely furnished but was not impressed with the patchwork ceiling or dirty bathroom ceiling. Ate in the bar and food was good although overpriced at £13 for burger and fries. Wanted to settle the bill that night and showed the diamond membership to receptionist who did not discount the bill and when I said it was wrong duty manageress who was dealing with other guests questioned the way I had spoken to her receptionist and I wasn't impressed with her lack of professionalism . In the end the bill was readjusted
I suggest if you are a member of the BW your staff be made aware of the tiers and perks especially at front of house
