Let me first state that this lodge is solely responsible for putting the Town Alicedale on the map, we got there by train and its the most scenic and beautiful way to get there.the ambiance, rooms, facilities and of special mention the spa/sauna's are must haves. We were there with friends in Dec 2011 for Christmas and the restaurant had excellent food throughout our two night DBB stay. The place caters well for couples and families alike in a peaceful environment. They have a great clubhouse pity about my golf scorecard though!!

We stayed at Bushman sands for a weekend recently and i am not a Golfer but boy did we have a blast at our yeard end function at Bushman sands.
The room could have been more updated and the tv a bit bigger seeing that we stayed
in a Junior suite.

The staff was freindly and always willing to help the Manager was excellent Well done to Difford and his staff and the ladies that take care of the kids where excellent too.

Rooms where clean and everything was working pitty i dont play Golf..

Other than that it is a nice place to go a nd have fun they should however get a few more things for one to do at Bushman Sands and get the boat working as well please..

Room Tip: does not matter they all looked the same.

On the morning we were due to arrive for a 2-night golfing break at this hotel we received a phone call to inform us that there were only 7 out of 18 golf holes open. This was due to floods that had washed the bridges away over the Bushmans River. OK, no one can do anything about severe weather...however, this flood damage had occurred at least 3 weeks before - just around the time we booked in fact!! Sorry, it's just not acceptable to inform guests at such a late stage. Having just experienced another major golfing let-down at Katberg, where the course was closed for maintenance and, again, we weren't informed, this was about the last straw.

We made the best of it and played the 7 holes (which weren't in very good condition and definitely not the most interesting holes on the course) 3 times. Very boring. At least the golf and the use of an electric cart was free.

As for the rest of the facilities, there's good and bad. We had a luxury room which was clean, spacious and comfortable with a huge bathroom & shower, plus a mini fridge and patio. The bar & dining areas looked in urgent need of some TLC - and some less gloomy lighting. The dining room carpet was stained and the dining chair covers starting to fray. The evening buffet-style dinner was, to say the least, ordinary and the charge outrageous! R80 for the main course (a choice of fatty-looking curry of indeterminate meat, small overcooked chicken pieces, shrivelled lamb chops or dried-up fish.) Dessert was a choice of a kind-of chocolate trifle made with Miracle Whip or similar or a small square of sponge pudding with lukewarm custard. For this, an extra R40 was charged! We opted to eat cheese & biscuits on our patio the following evening! The buffet breakfast, which is included in the room rate, was OK, but the bacon and sausage pieces had been sitting around for at least an hour or so and were dry. The lunchtime snack menu had only 4 choices: toasted cheese & ham or chicken mayo sandwiches, or a beef or chicken burger. Sandwiches at R30, burgers at R40. Not very nice or very good value.

As we'd exhausted the golf possibilities, we went on an evening 2-hour game drive. The scenery was pretty and followed the course of the river for some way, but we only saw a few waterbuck, springbok, a small herd of eland, a fish eagle a one warthog. I suppose the R250 charge was OK, though.

The main problem with this hotel is that it's on the edge of a very run-down village that has very little to offer - we couldn't even find anywhere else to eat, so be prepared! The service is a bit lethargic and indifferent. Like other reviewers, I don't think it deserves its 4-star rating.

It was by accident that we stayed at Bushman Sands the first time in 2008, but since then we came back every year. The road to Alicedale, a dirt road in 2008, has been improved and is now, from Port Elisabeth, completely tarred (mind you, not from Grahamstown).
A nice, be it not too well kept, Gary Players golf course is part of the hotel.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are as nice as the superior rooms and have a better acces to the swimming pool.

Everything about this hotel is not worth the 4 star rating. The carpets in the reception and dining area are dirty, the staff are poorly trained and dress so casually , the spa is mediocre and there is no option but to eat the recycled food as there is nowhere else to grab a bite. Don't be fooled by the website information. The adveritised river boat cruise is a myth as the boat has not functioned for more than 2 years. The only redeeming feature is the spaciousness of the rooms, peace and quiet and a game ranger with a wealth of information on the game you encounter on the game drive

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are airy

Having booked and paid for 3 nights we were very disappointed. The place can only be described as lacking soul. The bland decor, shabby furniture, little evidence of any maintenance, surly, disinterested staff, mediocre food at 5 star prices (there is nowhere else to eat so we had no choice) did not make for a pleasant stay. The large purple dinosaur jumping castle in the garden does not add anything to the ambience! Even the golf course is run down and poorly maintained. The spa also lacked any atmosphere. We got the impression that the place is about to close down and so they are not wasting time or money to do anything about the shabbiness or the untrained staff. This could be such a super place with some expert effort.
