“Sky Cottage is Heaven!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 June 2010

My husband and I had the great fortune to stay at Skye Cottage for 4 nights last year, and are looking forward to our next trip as soon as possible. The view from the living room cannot be beat; a straight shot down to Loch Tay, gorgeous sunrise views! Roland and Penny are fabulous hosts, and our dinner with them was excellent. The decor of the cottage is lovely, and the selection of books was eclectic and fun. Some wonderful cookbooks that I read cover to cover among others. All in all it was a faultless stay, even the rainy day that was stayed in. Actually, in retrospect, that was one of our favorite days. We have meat from the butcher in Aberfeldy produce from the store, a bottle of wine and some lovely biscuits from Penny. Good books a fire in the fireplace and the patter of rain on the roof. Very cozy, romantic, and relaxing!!!

We have just returned home from a 2 night stay at Rock Lodge at Loch tay. We have had the most serene time in the most stylish B&B I have or will ever stay in. Tthe owners Penny and Ronald could not have been more welcoming , helpful and accommodating of us. The breakfast is delicious. the rooms are delightful and very inviting. Everywhere there are little touches to make your stay perfect from the bathrobes, whitestuff toiletries, homemade shortbread, I could go on and on.The views are amazing and the house feels really special. I have never felt compelled to review on Trip Advisor before but Rock House is the most special place we have ever stayed. There are also 3 cottage self catering options which look equally devine.

From start to finish this B&B experience was perfect. From the moment we arrived we knew we were going to love every minute of it. Penny greeted us so warmly and showed us around their home, which is fantastic, contemporary, spacious, beautiful, stylish, warm and has a fantastic sense of humour - just like its owners Penny and Roland!

Our room was on the first floor and had a stunning view over the loch. So much thought and effort was put into every detail, from The White Company dressing gowns and bathroom products to the chocolate hearts, biscuits and fresh milk left every day for tea in your room. Although we never needed to use any of these as Penny and Roland fed and watered us so well!!

On Saturday we awoke to a family of red squirrels pottering around right outside one of the floor to ceiling windows surrounding the dining table, as we ate all of Penny's homemade and utterly delicious breakfast goodies we could really take in how beautiful the surroundings were, both on the inside as well as out. (I couldn't write this review without commenting on Penny's homemade marmalade - it is the stickiest and yummiest I have ever tasted)

Penny and Roland offer a dinner service, a fantastic idea after a long day walking. We had dinner with them both on Saturday night and Penny produced three courses of five star treats, including Steak Poivre and my hubby's favourite - Sticky Toffee Pudding. Penny went to so much trouble to make it especially and I cannot imagine getting treatment like that anywhere else.

With so much commercial big business out there, this just brings you back to what real quality and experience is all about. We would pay £120 a night any day to stay with Penny and Roland at Rock House..and if you're considering staying here all I can say is DO IT.

We have been to Rock House twice and have booked again for next year.....Waterfall Cottage is idyllic in every sense. There is nothing in trip advisors list that describes it well....It is just beautifully quiet. Good for reading, walking and fishing.

My husband and I stayed for 6 nights at The RockHouse and we can honestly say there was no where else in the world we'd rather have been.

We stayed on a B&B basis in the room at the very top of the house. It had the most stunning views across the loch. The furnishings and decorating were so beautiful and it felt very homely, Penny has a great eye for detail and design. The complimentary toiletries were from the White Company and freshly baked homemade biscuits with milk were left in our room to have with tea and coffee on most days.

Penny, as many people have already commented is an amazing cook and spends a lot of her time in her beautiful kitchen creating and perfecting recipes - she's also very warm and welcoming and she and Roland have a great sense of humour. They are super hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed sharing dinner and a few too many glasses of wine with them and their niece one evening! Make sure you have the smoked kippers for breakfast too!

We also enjoyed cooking for ourselves one evening down on the shore of the Loch where Roland and Penny have a beach hut/shed with all the cooking facilities you'll need to cook a good steak and drink a bottle of red wine. Good luck getting back up the hill after a tipple or 2 in the dark! We also built and lit a campfire down there which was great fun.

There are also some fantastic restaurants in the area . . . try the fish and chips at The Main of Taymouth Courtyard Brasserie. Delicious - really some of the best we've had. They also have complimentary wifi there which you can use whilst having coffee and reading the free papers.

There are plenty of activities to take part in in the area too . . . the countryside and scenery is stunning so we really made the most of the outdoors. We went Horse Riding with The Mains of Taymouth stables which was great fun, Mountain Biking (pick your route and follow it carefully!), on a Jeep Safari with Bob (a wildlife expert) from Highland Safari's. We went up to Blair Castle one day which is beautiful and very interesting and we also went on the Ghost tour by candle light at Castle Menzies which was actually quite scary but really interesting and enjoyable.

All in all it was the most fantastic trip and we're already planning to return with friends who have their wedding anniversary the day after ours.

Thank you Roland, Penny & Alfie for a super super time - we left feeling like part of the family.

(I'd just like to add that the Tripadvisor reviewer who calls himself 'Challenger 604' should be truly ashamed of himself for writing a negative review and consequently bringing the rating down on a property he's NEVER EVEN STAYED IN! Unbelievable!)

I'm kind of loathe to write this review as I want to save this place for myself! And that's a rare find! This was the last stop on our honeymoon and after a week of rain I had given up on any sunshine! But, as we drove along the South Tay Road and turned into the Rockhouse drive it turned glorious, the loch was shimmering and the Rockhouse had the best view imaginable to welcome us. Rockhouse offers B&B but we stayed in Waterfall Cottage in their grounds. Roland, the owner, showed us to the cottage.... it is a completely peaceful sanctuary, fab wood burner, private stream, little terrace, lovely loch views (from bed!). I only wish we had booked a week there instead! Penny and Roland recommended a local place for good seafood and couldn't have been more helpful and approachable. Writing this just makes me want to go back! Ssh! Don't tell anyone else about it...

  • Liked — Loch Tay view from bed!
  • Disliked — That I don't own it!

My husband and I have just returned from a most wonderful two night stay at Rock House which surpassed all our expectations (which were high following the previous Trip Advisor rave reviews and having stayed, we whole heartedly agree with!).

Situated on an elevated position on the south side of Loch Tay, Rock House is a cleverly designed house which blends incredibly well into the natural surroundings and thanks to the most amazing windows provides stunning views from all areas within the house. Penny and Roland's sumptuous taste provides for an impressive interior, yet one which is relaxed and most homely.

Unlike many other B&B's we have stayed in, Penny & Roland perfectly achieve the right balance of making you feel welcome and relaxed in their home, yet affording the privacy that one may naturally desire when on a break.

We had the great pleasure of having dinner on our first night, and not only sampled Penny's wonderful cooking, but we felt priviledged to be dining with Penny & Roland as well as three of their close friends and their son. It was a wonderful evening full of superb food and great conversation - what more can anyone ask for!

Whilst our stay was only for two nights, it was such a lovely relaxing break and we truly were sad to leave, especially as we had been made to feel so welcome and felt like we were leaving people who had become friends. We will certainly be back, hopefully before too long!
