“One of the best suprises I've had for accomodation”
Reviewed 13 July 2009

This was a magic place - but please note, as we missed this, it isnt a conventional hotel arrangement, more like luxury services accomodation - so no room service as such or bar/restaurant (hence why I have given it 4 stars which is a bit mean really). However, this is not a problem and the couple who run it are absolutely fabulous and cater for everything you may need - just ask and they'll work it out - including personally driving us to a local restaurant one night and then arranging for our pickup - all free.

The tree houses are amazing - all individual and unique, with carved fixtures and fittings. There's everything you'd need inside and loads of space. We stayed for 2 nights and it rained virtually all the time (we visited in the wet season, at the time of cyclone hamish), but it didnt make any difference.

Loads of facilities and things to do and the most magic location.

Would recommend to anyone.

We enjoyed our 5th visit to Secrets in June for our wedding anniversary. We stayed in Possums cabin, which was as beautiful as the others. The cabin was lovely and private (as they all are), and the views from every room are spectacular. There really is nothing like waking up in the morning to the magnificent view of the lake Baroon. Although, I have felt this way about all the cabins we have stayed in previously (Waterlillies x 2, Bower & Secrets) but what impressed me most was the improvements that George & Aldy have made to the cabin. In the possums cabin, the deck had been extended and a beautiful wooden couples swing added; a brand new couch; and a beautiful mohair throw (kept us warm and toasty on the winter night while having a swing). The cabins have everything you need for the weekend including a delicious & generous breakfast basket, including your choice of red, white or sparkling wine. We also ordered the BBQ hamper, which was full of delicious treats. Given that we had a rich lunch on the first day, as well as visiting the Maleny Cheesery (yum) for supplies & going a bit overboard at the Montville Fudge shop (yumity yum!), we had quite a few nibbles before dinner, so our BBQ hamper actually fed us for dinner both nights (with some fresh bread rolls we bought on the 2nd day). We would probably do that again. I have heard someone say they were suprised that a 5 star accommodation didn't include a dishwasher or oven, but we are there to relax and enjoy eachother's company, rather than creating Masterchef feasts. There is a dishwasher in the Secrets cabin (and maybe the other premium treehouses), but we actually quite enjoyed the peaceful chatting while we were washing up the 2-3 dishes after each meal.
With regards to the differences between the treehouses, we really loved the premium Secrets treehouse with it's larger layout including a dining area overlooking the private waterfall, and walk in shower with amazing private views of the waterfall. That being said, this time we stayed in Possums, a standard treehouse, and we didn't feel like we were missing out on anything (if you know what I mean). Although, because we are keen to try the other treehouses we have already booked a weekend next year in Platypus another premium treehouse. If I had to decide on a favourite from the cabins I've stayed at, obviously Secrets was the best, but of the standard treehouses, I think my current fab is Possums (but only by a nose).

My wife and I booked 2 nights at 'Secrets on the Lake' for our 1 year anniversary. We arrived and were warmly greeted by George. After a short orientation of the main facilities George showed us to our Luxury Penthouse Treehouse 'The Nest'. It was huge with self contained kitchen, beautiful iving area with suspended fireplace, multiple rooms, large bath, double shower with monsoon shower option, multiple decks, one with a large spa bath overlooking the rainforest, a love-swing and a BBQ. The treehouse was really original with amazing wood carvings and sculptures throughout the rooms. It's important to remember that you are situated on a beautiful lake in a lush rainforest where wildlife is abundant and it is important to use common sense and do very simple things like keep your windows shut at night. Overall the accommodation combined with fantastic warm service proved to be a memorable and very romantic anniversary.

The perfect getaway for a romantic retreat.

Secrets on the Lake is a short drive from the picturesque town of Montville in the Glasshouse Mountains. Set on the edge of Lake Baroon in amongst the rain forest you will find a collection of the most luxurious 'Tree Houses' I've ever seen.

Each tree house is reached via boardwalks from the main reception. The whole place has been built with privacy and luxury in mind.

From the booking process right through to check-out the staff were warm and helpful. We were staying locally and the place had been recommended to us, so we visited first to see what availability they had. We were shown one of the 'basic' tree houses, Waterlillies, and decided almost immediately that we would like to stay at Secrets.

Each tree house is individually themed. We decided on 'Wait-a-while' as it was one of the penthouse cabins.

When we arrived at reception to check in we were greeted by the staff and given a guided tour of the reception area. Here you can select DVD movies to take with you to your room free-of-charge and there was a good selection of films to choose from. We were also given a choice of wine or champagne to accompany our breakfast hamper and we selected the choices for our BBQ hamper for the following evening. There was also a full-sized billiards table for the use of guests.

We were then taken to 'Wait-a-while' where we were shown around our home for the next two days. Everything we could have expected was provided. Great attention to detail has been made and the atmosphere is fantastic, with soothing background music, mood lighting and nature providing stunning views.

Our cabin was large, much larger than we expected. There was a second bedroom upstairs, which had a balcony overlooking the lounge area. The bed that we chose to use was raised up above the lounge area, with stunning views out across the balcony and down to the lake. All the woodwork is handmade, including the bed. The theme is carried through the whole place with carvings all along the walkways, in the rooms, and the reception area.

The woodwork has to be seen to be fully appreciated. A kitchen area is also provided with a fridge, cooker, outside BBQ, tea and coffee etc.

The balcony is reached via large double doors and provides the best views of the lake. A large swing chair, again hand made, is provided to allow you to sit back and enjoy the view in comfort, and table and chairs are also provided for alfresco dining.

We were given a complimentary BBQ hamper when we made our booking. Highly recommended. A ready prepared salad, baked potatoes, deserts with cream and ice cream and selection of bread along with your choice of meat is provided. All you have to do is fire up the BBQ and cook the meat. We opted for the Rib steak and sausages - both of which were delicious.

Each morning fresh croissant and or muffins are delivered to the front door.

There was a large hot tub and walk in shower area in our tree house, both with private views of the rain forest. A selection of toiletries is provided, all of a very good quality.

In all, we found very little to fault. Our only reservation was that perhaps the tree house could have been serviced on the second day, although they appear to leave you in peace and privacy and I suspect had we asked they may well have done this for us.

We would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle, enjoy nature close up and wants to spice up their love life

My Husband and I just returned from our QLD honeymoon and chose to spend two nights in The Bower treehouse at Secrets on the Lake. We wish we had stayed longer!! As soon we arrived the personal touches and beauty of this place was evident. The treehouse interior is almost completely handcarved with gorgeous creatures like platypus, bower birds, frogs etc and it was right on gorgeous Lake Baroon. A BBQ hamper was given to us for a lovely BBQ on the balcony overlooking the lake and the champagne basket that was full of home made scones, biscuits and bread along with local made yoghurt, fruits etc was a gorgeous (and delicious) touch. The pictures do not do it justice, it has to be seen to be believed. We will be going back again and again and wish that we had something similar in Sydney...but alas we don't so a yearly trip to Montville will be made to go back. You will not be dissapointed!

On a recent trip to Montville in Queensland, my boyfriend and I treated ourselves to a night at Secrets on the Lake. We'd been camping and overnight bussing it, so our night in a beautiful, spacious log cabin with decking and BBQ overlooking the tranquil Lake Baroon was just what the doctor ordered!

The cabins are run by a friendly local family who know the area well and who really go the extra mile (or kilometer, depending where you're from!) to make your stay a special one. The cabins are all individual and have lovely hand carved touches dotted throughout.

Seriously, you won't want to leave your cabin - what with the Jacuzzi, double shower, DVD player, stereo fully equipped kitchen, swinging seat on the deck and skylights looking up into the tree tops, this is a true paradise and if it wasn't for the chance to go canoeing on the lake and enjoy the late afternoon sunshine, we wouldn't have.

Secrets have different packages - you can dine out, self cater, or do as we did and opt for the delicious homemade food hamper. We chose salmon, steak, salad, garlic bread, coleslaw, chocolate pudding and ice cream. We cooked the meat and onions ourselves on the BBQ on our private deck, then kicked back and relaxed with a bottle of wine (Australian, of course!)

The cabins are all hidden in the trees and reached by a series of boardwalks, providing the ideal, romantic and relaxing getaway for anyone looking to unwind either with the family or with a loved one.

  • Liked — The scenery & attention to detail in the cabins
  • Disliked — Nothing - loved it all!

Secrets was Amazing. Working in the travel industry I have seen a lot of hotels and Secrets stands out! We stayed in the Bower cabin which had great views of the lake and a feeing of being the only people out there was great. With little touches such as breakfast and BBQ hampers, home made biscuits and scones and champagne it is a foodie heaven. We stayed for our honeymoon and did not want to leave. We will be back!
