“Very charming hotel with good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2012

We stayed at this very charming hotel only for one night, and I whish we had stayed longer.
The staff was very sweet and service minded, and the rooms spacious and nice. Maybe a little overcrowded with teddybears for my taste, but still with a very nice atmosphere.
There is also a very nice restaurant at the hotel, so you really do not have to go anywhere.
Would very much like to come back and stay longer!

the entrance to the room escorted by a staff member was fun to go through the vin de caves - but mind your head. fortunately there are 2 other easier entrances through the garden terrace or a door from the front street. Our garden room was gorgeously sunny and looked out on the lovely garden terrace - great spot for a drink in the sunshine. a couple of downers - no bottled water in the room, the bedlights were not strong enough for reading, there is only one overhead light in the bathroom which is not strong enough to use the mirror properly, the hair dryer cord was not quite long enough to stand in front of bathroom mirror and there was a distinct push at check in to immediately book in for breakfast and to eat in the restaurant. The restaurant looked lovely but was formal and very expensive - cheap casual and fun Bella Italia is next door with great pasta and pizza - get a table by the big back window. Couple of good boulangeries open from 7.30 am for a much cheaper and better continental breakfast than paying 15E in hotel.

Room Tip: get a garden room - the ones on the busy front road noisy and church bells peal

La Malle Poste is a wonderfully restored old inn. The staff was very accomodating and the location is fantastic for the town and surrounding area. Very near to Le Jupy and of course Abbaye St. Remy. We liked the free, secure parking lot around back.
Unlike most other accomodation in Belgium, breakfast was not included in the price of the room. At 15 euros a head for rolls and coffee, we chose not to partake and instead had coffee and croissant up the street in a patisserie for a fraction of the cost. Also the hotel is not set up whatsoever for disabled or handicapped travelers. All that being said, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and I would definitely recommend this place to other travellers.

Room Tip: Room 12 has some low eaves. Watch your head if you use the toilet at night!

I wonder about the sometimes lesser comments on this hotel. We stayed here for three nights and enjoyed our stay. I must say, we had probably one of the best rooms: we stayed in room 9 in the" maison du cocher", wich in fact was a small suite. The room was spacious and nicely decorated. There was a large bathroom with rain shower, bubble bath and two washbasins. There was a separate toilet. Also very quite at night. We looked at the back of the hotel. You can join the restaurant via the hotel's wine cellar; great château's!
Hotel guests may use the wellness facilities on a complimentary basis: a swimming pool, large enough; a sauna and a hammam; the latter two from 4 to 7 pm. Sometimes busy there, an half hour before closing is the best time to go. Breakfast was rather sober, no buffet.
We had diner at three different places in town and the hotel restaurant (La Caleche) was the best experience: very tastefull modern cuisine but without the espuma's and other El Bulli situations. A very large winelist (unfortunate only French), rather expensive.

Room Tip: Ask a room in the maison du cocher.

The restaurant wasn't open the night we stayed. We were shown to our room via the car park and dimly lit corridor leading past the indoor swimming pool and gym, and then up the lift. All in all a very confusing journey. Only one key was provided which made it difficult when one of us wanted to go back to the car to pick up something. The key activated the electricity and the room was very dark. The room itself was very pretty however the soft toys were a bit much for 2 mature adults. We felt as if we'd stepped into a magazine shoot. We didn't see or hear any other guests the night we stayed and it felt very unsettling.

Firstly the good news. The hotel is in a beautifully renovated (2004 I think) 16th century building in the centre of Rochefort. The decor is a great mixture of the traditional and the modern. Our bedroom was comfortable, but the front bath panel was actually coming away from the bath. This is something that a good hotel should have spotted and fixed before renting the room to paying guests.

However, all is not totally well in paradise. The main issue during our vista were the staff. They seemed very young (not a problem, of course, if well trained) and - unfortunately - displayed a very off-hand attitude. Coupled with an apparent universal inability to smile (let alone make us feel welcome), this left a very poor impression of our stay.

I am told the restaurant has a Michelin star. This may well be the case, but of itself this is no excuse for excessive pricing. The set menu was an eye-watering €60 and even a cup of tea during the afternoon was €9. Rather a lot of money for a mug of hot water and accompanying tea bag.

At breakfast, two of our group had chipped plates. This is unhygienic, of course, and should not be acceptable in even the most modest hotel, let alone one with the pretensions of La Malle Post. When this was pointed out to the waitress, she told us she would 'tell the boss.' Well thanks a lot, but changing the plates immediately would have been an even better idea. We were also asked if we wanted eggs virtually at the end of the meal. This was way too late for three of the four of us. Again, for €15 a head, the service should have been exemplary.

The annoying thing is is that all these issues are relatively easy to fix. The owner must have spent a small fortune in renovating the building, and this has been done very well. But an hotel is more than just a building. It will also succeed or fail dependent on the quality of its staff and the nature of the welcome they extend to their guests.

On the present showing, La Malle Poste scores 8/10 for the hotel building, but a very poor 3/10 for its staff. I am afraid the latter will prevent me from going back, not could I recommend it to friends.

I hope the owner reads this and takes action, as the hotel should be very good (especially for the prices charged). One of our group did point out these issues to the owner when we checked out. He seemed genuinely shocked to hear of our experiences. Not sufficiently shocked to offer any form of refund though.

Maybe, all people at this hotel have something to learn?

Room Tip: Stay in the hotel by all means, but unless you enjoy paying a fortune for a somewhat pretentious men...

Finding our way in was a little confusing, but it's in the restaurant at the side. Apart from the main man/head chef English was poor. There was a lovely garden at the back and a private car park. Our room overlooked the garden and was lovely and old fashioned. Complimentary robes & slippers to use when using the pool/jacuzzi. Bathroom was very modern. Built in hair-dryer did not work, but ther was a spare one hung up behing the door. There was access straight out on to the street without having to go back through the restaurant. We managed to lock ouselves out of the safe, but the receptionist sorted it straight away. Accomodation was good value, but the restaurant was pricey. €60 for a set menu. But the chef did have a Michelin star.
