“My best ever hotel experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

Ok - so where to begin. Our experience of Barnsley House was amazing.

It was my wedding night - my new wife & I arrived to be told by the manageress that we had been upgraded to their best available room. Their best available room was a palace - up in the eaves of the old stone Cotswold manor house with views over the destination garden to the countryside beyond.

The first thing we did was go for a walk through the famous gardens, which are genuinely stunning - unique, original and tasteful. On returning to the house I ordered some champagne to be sent to our room - when it arrived a few minutes later we were promptly told it was complimentary as a gift from Barnsley House. Nothing tastes sweeter than free premier cru champagne - we are amazingly grateful, it totally wasn't necessary but really added to our great day.

The style of Barnsley house is the epitome of englishness; understated and very individual with eclectic, original art, tasteful furnishings, lots of fires, staff who are people not just faceless automatons. In short it feels like a genuine, welcoming home - albeit a home with every mod con and conceivable luxury at hand. Ditto the staff - everyone we spoke with was extremely well presented, intelligent, knowledgeable and charmingly courteous.

We had a great meal in the Potager restaurant - the truffle and porcini lasagna is absolutely exquisite and worth a star alone, which we washed down with a really rather reasonably priced bottle of vintage Chambertin.

The bed we slept in was i think the most comfortable bed i have ever slept in, the bath (which i didn't get to try out) was a fantastic, freestanding piece of design, centre-stage in the magnificent bathroom. The shower (which i did try) was piping hot with amazing pressure for the top floor of a centuries old building.

Breakfast was great and the finale was our visit to the Barnsley Spa for some massages and relaxing in the hydrotherapy pool. It was like LA has come to Gloucestershire - very slick, in an eco-chic kind of way.

Without a shadow of a doubt we will be back - my best ever hotel experience.

Thank you Barnsley.

We had heard great things about Barnsley House and as we were attending a family wedding in the area we had to take the opportunity to visit and it really was perfect. We arrived in the middle of a torrential downpour and were greeted by the lovely staff with umbrellas to guide us in. The building and grounds can only be described as STUNNING! We were lucky enough to stay in the Secret Garden suite and loved it. Walking in through the Secret Garden door into your own room within walled gardens is truly unique and the room was luxurious, sophisticated and indulgent - exactly what we hoped for. Love the large stone bath and the bed was one of the comfiest we have ever slept in.

We spent some time in the Spa which was great. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to experience a treatment but we loved relaxing in the hydrotherapy pool (think that's what its called) and the steam rooms. Wish we had had longer to enjoy the facilities as it is a lovely spa and we really loved the way it is so well blended into the beautiful surroundings.

We enjoyed a lovely evening in the bar and restaurant. The décor is gorgeous, a perfect mix of contemporary and old without feeling over styled. All the rooms are calm and relaxing and you feel that you want to stay there forever.

Dinner was delicious. We particularly enjoyed the shin of beef and the signature pasta starter. The service throughout was spot on - professional, friendly and attentive without being intrusive.

Breakfast was a brilliant spread - think we had about 4 courses each!

We finished our stay off with a walk around the gorgeous gardens and in the village to have a look at the pub before we headed off - wanted to buy every house in the village!

We can't wait to visit again and next time we will definitely stay longer and book some treatments, try out the cinema and have a meal on one of the nights at The Village Pub.

Michele the General Manager and all the staff really looked after us throughout our stay and we would like to say a big thank you. We look forward to seeing you again soon, and we will be up to see your new place The Lord Crewe Arms really soon as its not far from where we live.

Thank you again
Dave and Charlotte Reilly

A wonderful setting to Dine In Style... We had a wonderful Tea in great surroundings all the staff were very attentive and you felt that nothing was to much trouble. From a personal point of view the Tea was a present and lovely that it was you would question the £18 a head, you get a selection of 8 small cakes 2x cream scones and 8 small triangular sandwiches all very lovely and surprisingly filling, our only negative was the bread might not have been as fresh as it could have been.
This really is a great place to relax walking around the grounds we came accross the Spa that is in a great location, in my opinion a great place to stay to explore the rural surrounds of the cotswolds.

Special friend and I were on a half day spa break. The spa was at the end of a pretty winding path through idyllic woodland, even on a damp day! Enjoyed all the facilities, but especially the massage - well done Kate, one of the best ever! Only drawback, very undersized changing facilities - can't help getting to know others if more than 2 in there! Lunch absolutely gorgeous, especially the speciality of the house main course. The staff could not have been more professional, helpful and accommodating, contributing to my desire to return!

After the Bath Priory and the Manor House, I guess we were ready for a come-down, and Barnsley House was it.

The outer appearance of Barnsley House is spectacular---a beautiful medieval manor and beautiful gardens---but things start going downhill quickly when you step inside. The public rooms are small, oddly furnished and adorned with cheap and insubstantial art. The dining room is not designed for fine dining, it looks more like a cafe or bistro.

We had asked for the best room, which proved to be a mistake. The highest-priced room is Room 11, The Secret Garden, which is a modern contemporary suite with private garden. Lovely, except when you are in the Cotswolds do you really want to feel like you are staying in a beach house in Southern California?

Then there were the minor aggravations: A bathroom fan which wouldn't turn off; the fact that the room is not a true suite [the two rooms are separated by a half-curtain].

We ate there for two dinners: The first night was not good---neither of us finished our meals. But BH is isolated, so we went back a second night. The food was wonderful. So it depends on what you order.

Then there is the service. It doesn't seem like they give their staff any training. The people who did the turn-down service each night would leave the door wide-open, even when they left. It was 45 degrees and windy outside, but they left the door wide-open every time. Then this morning at breakfast, we had the "Do Not Disturb" sign on, but they ignored the sign, brought breakfast 30 minutes early and barged in on my wife when she was walking around naked. On the first night, at 12:30 am, we discovered that we didn't know how to operate the thermostat [it is neither easy nor intuitive]. We called for help; 20 minutes later, no one had appeared so we called again and told them to forget it. We slept with the door open.

I would give BH 3-stars, except for the fact that the building and grounds are so beautiful.

I took my mum to Barnsley House for mothers day for half a spa day. This house is set in a beautiful setting in the Cotswolds. The spa is stunning and modern with very helpful staff. Gemma and Kay were very helpful and accommodating as I was running 30 minutes due to traffic.

Lunch which was also included in the spa day was of a high quality and great service again. Really amazing place and customer service. No pressure to add on to your package just great service. Everyone was helpful and friendly.

I cant wait to go back and stay. This time with the rest of my friends and family. An amazing experience that I am going to be recommending to all!

A very well run establishment.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014 via mobile

We stayed at Barnsley House the night after our wedding. There was some confusion regarding our spa treatments (the system was showing these as cancelled!!) and I was sent an email at 8.30pm on the Friday (2 days before our stay, and the night before our wedding!)

I wasn't best pleased to have to be trying to sort this out at an already stressful time. I was told that reception would contact me at 9am the following morning once they had spoken to the spa. As it was, I had to chase them but they confirmed all was ok regarding the treatments.

Anyway, moan over and onto why I gave Barnsley House 5 out of 5....

The location is beautiful and the entrance into the house is lovely, especially when the fire is going on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

We were welcomed at reception by Peter and shown up to our room (4). It was simply stunning. A huge bedroom area, gorgeous and spotlessly clean bathroom and a lovely lounge area.

As we'd had such a busy day the day before we decided to relax on the bed for a while (my new husband wanting to watch the Liverpool match - sky is available in both the lounge and bedroom). The bed was so comfortable I fell asleep for a while.

We were going to have dinner in the restaurant but after having a lovely bath we decided to just stay in our robes and have room service.

This was no problem at all and our seperate orders (for starters/mains, then dessert) were handled brilliantly by Abi. As well as this, on ordering drinks, a congratulatory bottle of champagne was sent up which we felt was a lovely touch.

There is only one word for the food....INCREDIBLE. Every dish was brimming with flavour and colour, and the use of seasonal/local ingredients was evident. Breakfast the next morning continued this theme.

We had our massages in the morning as well as use of the facilities of the spa.

Yes the spa is small but it's well thought out with all you could need for a couple of hours. The hydrotherapy pool outside is fab as are the relaxation areas, sauna, herbivarium etc.

My massage has to go down as one of the best I have ever had, my back still feels great now. My husband also commented on how good his was. Yes there is a fan on in the room but after a few minutes I barely noticed as I was so relaxed. I often find it difficult to properly relax during a massage but at Barnsley House I felt like I melted into the bed. Just amazing.

The price for the package isn't cheap but we felt it's worth it for the quality and special touches you experience. We're planning to return for our first anniversary, or possibly try out the sister hotel, Calcot Manor.
