“Five Star Service & Venue”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

We have just had the best wedding experience with the Step House Hotel.
Last weekend we got married there and the service, food, hotel rooms (and our Penthouse), bar, restaurant and whole village was top class. Our guests had a great day, loved the venue, the food, the staffs attention to detail and the setting.
The Step House Hotel is still building its reputation as a top wedding venue but has grown from less than 50 weddings a year to over 80 this year. The staff know their roles inside out and were taking care of all the little details without us having to direct them.
Head Chef Alan knows his food inside out and has an army of great staff who delivered top notch food, all organically and locally sourced where possible, on both nights. The food easily compares favourably with some of the top restaurants we've eaten in in Ireland.
The hotel management couldn't do enough for us and we were hugely happy with how the day went.
A little known gem, in a beautiful rural village all overlooked by Mount Leinster.
Thanks guys for a great job.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms share the same beautiful view of Mt Leinster. The few rooms at the front which don...

Spacious comfortable room. Huge bathtub. Borris is a small town with very nice locals. Well worth a visit. Plenty of parking. Particularly liked the grand staircase. If I'm passing through again I'll definitely stay

My husband and I dined here in April 2014 upon the recommendation of two different people we knew. There was a wedding on in the function room with another booked for the following day. The waitress was excellent, very welcoming and informative and really wanted to know what we thought of each dish. There was a nice gap between courses and no need to rush. The breads arrived at the table first. One of the nicest selections of breads I've ever seen - with two I had never tasted before - turmeric bread and bread with caramelised onion. All were delicious and almost fell apart they were so fresh. For starter I had the goat's cheese which came with caramelised onion, apple puree and thinly sliced pear on top with a small drizzle of red berry compote. Delicious. My husband had Kilmore Quay hake which he loved but it was on a bed of what tasted like rice pudding which didn't do anything for the dish. Main courses - I had fillet of steak which was cooked to perfection with string beans and mashed potatoes with spring onions. My husband had the duck. Both dishes were super. We 'forced' ourselves to have a dessert and they were outstanding. Probably the highlight! One was a parfait with thinly sliced pear with a scoop of ice cream and a spoon of goat's cheese! The other was a chocolate tart with a scoop of peanut butter icecream which complimented the chocolate perfectly. Lovely dining experience with an attentive and efficient waitress. Well done - we'll be back....

Room Tip: I couldn't find the restaurant here, to just review it. We didn't stay - hotel was booked up...

We booked this hotel from the internet as I was visiting an ill relative locally. I did almost no research into it, as I just booked based on location.
What a great surprise.
We arrived, starving, not having found anywhere for lunch on the way and bracing ourselves for a packet of crisps, when we found a fantastic menu being served in the bar, amazing food.
My room made me gasp, it was so enormous, two bathrooms and a view of Borris House. Total luxury.
Definitely recommend.

We stayed on a Friday night in March. We had been given a voucher for this hotel as a gift. What a gift it was! The hotel is inconspicuous on the Main Street in Borris. Look out for discreet sage green paintwork. On arrival, it was a bit difficult to find the back entrance to the hotel from the car park as there is absolutely no signage. The car park itself is quite small and is also not signed. We arrived at reception and a lovely open fire. Staff were extremely friendly from check in to check out. Our room was gorgeous, large with old furniture and a four poster. We dined in the bar food was scrumptious and reasonably priced. Breakfast was a very generous assortment of juices, fruit, cereal etc and a wonderful full irish cooked to order. Would totally recommend Step House for a quiet getaway.

Spent a second weekend in this hotel and it was just as good as the first visit. The hotel is small but the staff and owners are personable and friendly and you definitely feel like a welcome guest rather than a number to fill another room. The room was gorgeous and the food was superb. Definitely a return-to place for a relaxing time. Don't think it would be very suitable for young children as it is a small hotel and there isn't to occupy them. Perfect for couples or a group of adults.

Room Tip: The superior rooms are large and airy and open out onto a large balcony through two sets of French w...

Just back from a recent stay in the Stephouse Hotel, and it didn't disappoint. While it is a small, its a very cosy comfortable hotel, we stayed in a beautiful Deluxe Room with lots of space and massive bathroom. The food in the restaurant and service was outstanding definately the highlight, and the breakfast the next morning "delicious", but its the staff that make it, all so friendly and welcoming. My only 2 negatives, the towels were small in size and well worn definately in need of replacement. We had a room opposite the main street which was fine except there was a function on the night we stayed, to be fair we were called and advised in advance of our stay, but we were woken in the middle of the night with revelers heading home who proceeded to chat outside/shout for approx 1 hour either waiting for lifts or taxis which was extremely annoying. While this did not spoil our stay, the hotel should consider the guests and make sure people do not congregate outside when its late at night. For those looking for a quite stay request a room at the back.
