“Best place to stay on Easter Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2013

This is the best place to stay on Easter Island. Juan, the owner, saved our day when we found out that our tours were not going to work out AND a cruise ship was in town. He solved the problem by making a lot of calls and found a solution. The home was clean and properly equipped, and we truly enjoyed our stay. Juan also drove us around the area upon our arrival to give us an idea of where to walk, to get food, etc. This was the highlight of a three week trip. Thanks, Juan!

We stayed 4 nights at Cabanas Tautira and would recommend them. The Cabanas are large with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a patio. We liked that the area was gated and we were able to park our rental car in a secure area. The Cabanas are close to town and it easy to walk to dinner. Juan and Jorge are very helpful and available for any questions.

Highly recommended if you need to stay on EI for a long time as has a fully equipped kitchen where you can cook your own meals (eating out on EI is expensive!). Jorge and Juan are also a delight to deal with.

One block walk from the main street.

We are a couple with a 3 yr old daughter and stayed 4 nights here. Each day was sheer bliss. We spent a month traveling through Chile and Peru and this was by far our best stay of the trip in all possible respects. Jorge and Juan rent out two bungalows on their property. They both have bungalows of their own on the same land but you wouldn't notice. They will keep to themselves offering you complete privacy but the instant you need something all you would need is to knock at their door. Jorge picked us up at the airport and showed us around the town. After checking us in the first thing he pointed out was the swings and trampoline they had installed in the garden for their own kids. He said please make sure your daughter uses everything freely and enjoys herself. They did not once ask for the payment in advance nor did they ask what our plans were and try to push us anything - a tour or car rental etc. It all felt like family. Their mother lives with them and one day she sent the housekeeper over to our bungalow with a jug full of cold mango juice. Their housekeeper also cheerfully helped us with laundry

The bungalows themselves are very modern 2 bed room units, well equipped with a kitchenette and an easy 5 min walk from the main street of Hanga Roa. There is a large patio in the front where you can spend time endlessly watching the break of dawn (the island is several hours behind mainland so you will inevitably wake up at or before dawn) and the glorious sunsets. We brought food and pisco from Santiago and cooked our own meals and had it on the patio each day. We also rented the 4WD from Jorge for a couple of days.....we looked around and could not find a better price. It was very convenient to pick up the jeep and come and go at will. There is wi-fi on the grounds and it works perfectly although the internet on EI is slow.

When it was time to leave, we were anxious about how far in advance we had to check in. Jorge's response - come let me take you over to the terminal and check you in. Then you can come back and relax and I will drop you back at boarding time. This is Rapa Nui..... we've not seen anything like this island and we have not seen anything close to this level of warmth and down to earth hospitality before.

Room Tip: There are two cabanas adjacent to each other and both are fantastic.

We highly recommend Cabanas Tautira! We had a wonderful and relaxing time staying here.

Jorge picked us up at the airport and again took us to the airport with lei greetings both times, it was a nice touch. He gave us a tour around town, showing us where everything was before taking us to the cabin. It was a nice place with two bedrooms, everything was clean and roomy for our family of 5. With fully equipped kitchen, we were able to prepare many wonderful meals there after exploring the island. Location was perfect, it was only a block in from Main street so it was quiet but at the same time close to everything. Supermarket is right next door so you don't need to go far in case you need milk or something.

Jorge's brother Juan who is equally wonderful helped arranged car rental and tours. He compared the prices, called around and made sure we got great value and we appreciated that.

I stayed in one of Juan`s bungalows for almost three weeks and I really enjoyed every day. I especially appreciated the very spacious terrace. Also the bungalow was very spacious for only one person, and it provided everything I needed to feel home. The interior is simple but everything worked fine. I found a clothes drying rack as well as a flat iron and an ironing board - important if you want to stay for a longer time. The kitchen was equipped with everything that was necessary to prepare your own meals, and especially the shower was perfect. There was hot water all the time. The cabanas are located very centrally in Hanga Roa. Main street is in very short walking distance, and there is a small "supermarket" just next door. Juan and his family were very friendly and they really cared for me so that I felt comfortable. I will definitely stay there again when I will come back to Rapa Nui next time! It is an absolutely recommendable place and worth the money. Everything is quite expensive on the island and you can save a lot of money if you prepare your own meals. It was my third visit to the island and I had spent much more money when I had stayed in hotels and had to go out for dinner every night.
PS: If you want to stay there please bring a good can opener. The one in the cabana is not very good and I couldn`t find a place to buy one in Hanga Roa.

Cabanas Tautira
My wife and I stayed at Tautira for four nights in March and would highly recommend it. I was expecting a rustic “cabin” but instead it’s more like a modern two bedroom apartment with plenty of space, patio with furniture, etc. It was very clean and the property is well maintained. We ate in almost everyday (we did some grocery shopping in Santiago before our flite) and that saved us a lot of money. And the rate Tautira charges is a bargain.

Tautira is owned by two brothers, Juan and Jorge, and they each own a house on the property so there is always someone available if both brothers are out. But despite the proximity, they respect your privacy, which I appreciated.

The brothers and their team are very helpful. Anytime we needed something (call for a taxi, extra towels, etc.) they handled it right away and seemed very pleased at the opportunity to do something for us. They arranged a car rental for us and when we told them about the hike we were going to take they went over the map with us to make sure we would not get lost. Then they suggested an alternate starting point that turned out to be much better than our original plan.

One thing I was really grateful for was that there was no attempt to sell us any extra services. My wife and are pretty independent travelers, we rarely hire guides or go on organized excursions. In other places we have stayed we have felt pressured by the hotel owner to sign up for their guided tour because they make money on that. Not at Tautira, they were totally happy to let us go on our own way if we wanted. That was a relief. To put this in perspective, I had a pair of pants that needed laundering, which they took care of right away. When I checked out, I noted it was not on the bill. Jorge shrugged it off, it was just a pair of pants. Now, I am not saying you will get free laundry service here, just saying that they are not out to nickel and dime you.

Tautira is located two blocks from the main drag so it is within walking distance of the shops and restaurants and the caleta. Getting a taxi to the see the sights further afield was not a problem.

I would definitely recommend Tautira.
