See for yourself where and how the stone was quarried, the appalling working conditions and dangers faced by the work force, some as young as 8 years old. See too, the site of the secret Catholic Chapel and where smugglers hid their contraband. 2000 years of heritage brought vividly to life

We were very impressed by the Beer Quarry caves. The guide was very informative. It is quite cold so you must bring something warm otherwise they do have ponchos to borrow, they even had an animal print one for my fashionable daughter! Also it is wet inside so good footwear would be good too. We were very lucky as there was only 4 of us on the tour and the guide was very informative. I really enjoyed the talk and tour and found it very good value for money. My mum who is in her 70's and her sister stayed in the cafe while we had our tour. Mind you it was flat in the caves except for the walk down to the caves which was a bit steep.

The Beer Quarry Caves are just that - a network of man-made caves created by the quarrying of the local limestone, prized from Roman times for its beauty and the ease with which it could be worked. We were lucky, on a quiet day we were the only two people on our tour, so had the undivided attention of our friendly and knowledgeable guide. It is a fascinating visit, giving a great insight into not only the methods used to extract the huge blocks of stone from the quarry (used to build everything from Roman villas to churches, cathedrals and manor houses) but also into the brutal conditions endured by the workers over the 2000 years that the stone has been quarried.

There is plenty of (free) car-parking, and a tea & gift shop. Yellow 'Bob the Builder' type helmets are supplied. It's cool and damp in the caves, so wear a fleece or warm jacket. The floor is largely flat, though slightly uneven in places with some slight slopes. Wear sensible shoes - stilettos or flip-flops not recommended!

The caves are large, plenty of headroom, no crawling or squeezing required. It's not brightly lit, but quite sufficient to see your way round.

If you enjoy visiting cathedrals, churches and grand houses, you'll come away from Beer Quarry Caves with a fresh perspective on how the material used for those fine buildings was come by, and the human cost of extracting it.

Took a trip to Beer Quarry Caves... Really enjoyed the experience. Tour takes approximately 1hr and is filled with entertainment and interesting historical facts that takes you on a trip through history starting with the Romans and finishing in the 20th Century... It's a steady 9degrees (50f) so wear a fleece or warm jumper...
