“Excellent Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed 16 October 2012

We had a really tasty Sunday lunch at the Dolphin. Yes the place is not fashionable, however the food was great. The Chef works hard to provide a tasty, well presented Sunday Roast for £8.90, (red cabbage to die for!)

The reason we went to the Dolphin was see Alan West and Steve Black, playing in the Long Bar - these two very talented guys play at the Dolphin in alternate Sundays (other artists play here as well). Please Google Alan West and hear a sample of his music.

The atmosphere in the bar was lively, friendly and very welcoming. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Only ate here, so cannot comment on the rooms.

After a week in the area we choose the Dolphin Hotel to enjoy our last night in Beer. Getting to the end of the season and not many places left open I was not going to expect a great deal, but got to admit we were pleasantly surprised. An old fashioned setting with a more mature kind of client was how would describe the over half full cosy, warm dining room, they obviously knew more than me, as we had a lovely meal. After a dicky slow start the waitress in charge come over and apologised as there were only two waitresses on that night and they were far busier than expected. Our order were taken and we did not have to wait long before our meal was served, the barman did the business with the drinks and we were impressed with the starters. Main meals came soon afterwards, I had the Turkey which was so so, looked to me like turkey roll, but ate ok, my wife had the scallops which were perfectly cooked and were spot on, served on a nice thick piece of gammon. although the waitresses were pushed they were pleasant, helpful and always smiling, a credit to the hotel. A meal for two around £45 with drinks. Would recommend this venue for a meal, its nice sometimes to visit these seaside places and be transported back in time with genuine 'nice to see you smile' and service to match. If your in Beer give this a try and don't forget to try the guest beer!

We had (for the second time) the opportunity to eat at the Dolphin Hotel and again it was a good experience. It felt a little dated, as did the menu but that is not to criticise...a lot of people are looking for a place to eat like this. The staff were very friendly and attentive, the food was excellent and generous as well as being served in good time.
So if you want to step back a little in time and avoid some modern trappings that other so-called restaurants have then this is the place to go.

One minor thing for the Dolphin Hotel. Can you fix the chiller fans in the far left corner by the waiters station......they rattle continuously and it is a little disturbing to anyone sitting near there.

My second stay of the year at the Dolphin and this visit only backed up the great first stay. Regatta week is a very busy week in Beer and the hotel was certainly packed but the staff coped admirably in all aspects. Room once again spotless, food brilliant and the general atmosphere superb. Will once again visit in the near future and personally would find it hard to find a better place to stay. Well done one and all at the Dolphin. Iain

Only visited the restaurant. A traditional menu with food which is wholesome, basic but nothing particularly memorable.
The hotel is in a bit of a time warp with a sixties environment and sixties music.
Nothing to complain about but nothing to excite either.

We staid for one night on our trip through Cornwall and Devon and had a choice of rooms on the day we asked for a room. All had one or the other disadvantage.
Beer is a great village to spend some outdoor time. This place does the job if you need a bed to sleep, but it feels like it could do with a restoration. Breakfast was poor compared to all other places we stayed during our trip.

Been going to beer for 32 years. Stayed at the Dolphin a number of time. Rooms basic but comfortable but the wall are a little thin!! Good selection of well kept beer and great local fish in the bar - good portions. Also more formal dinning room at the rear. Breakfast is early - all done by 9.15. Beer itself is a little treasure the only place I know where you can still get a cup of tea in a china cup on the beech. Worth a visit.
