“Beautiful place!”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

We stayed at Cleavers Lyng for 2 nights and it was a wonderful experience. Before entering the house, first thing you will notice is the beautiful garden and wonderful English country scene! The bed is very comfortable, and the breakfast is very tasty. It is just next to the Hertsmonceux castle. There is also an old church within walking distance to visit. The hosts are friendly and helpful, and their dogs are very very cute! The house was built in 16th century, so it is old and may not be that updated. But I think this is actually the unique part about it. The roof could be low for tall people, and occasionally you will find some spot with some dust or spider web, but overall, for a hundreds-year old building, I would say it is fairly clean and well maintained. The only thing made me a bit uncomfortable is the long mirror just outside our bathroom in the hall way. It was a bit dusty and foggy, plus the fact that the house is so old, sometimes it did make me nervous...but I assume that is just because I am not a brave girl. And no, we checked, there is no ghost in this old house. ;)

Beautiful house and gardens, very tranquil with amazing views. Nicely presented rooms and excellent breakfast cooked to order, delicious. The pet dogs are delightful. Paying cash results in 5%discount.

Room Tip: Rooms at front of hotel have great views over rolling countryside

A realy tranquil setting with views across the Pevensey Levels. Our room (The Sunny Room) had a double aspect so was indeed sunny and airy.
Breakfasts were excellent with a choice of fruit, ceraeals, juices and pastries including home made banan loaf to start follwed by FEB,continental hams and cheeses, smoked salmon & scrambled egg or omelette.
Very dog friendly (the owners have three small terriers) but standards of comfort and cleanlines were much more than you would expect.
Helpful hints as to what is on offer locally which was faultless.
Quiete and unobtrussive a real gem.

Even though were from West Sussex (50 mins away) I would definitely recommend this place its beautiful, we stayed here for a few nights and were very impressed. Sally was great and very welcoming. Our room was stunning and views too, tea and coffee was always topped up. Breakfast was delicious, such choice and quality of food was great. Ok it was pretty cold in march this year but it was the best time in my opinion as everytime we came home from a day out the log fire was on, it looked super cosy. We will visit this place again and it will probably be in the colder months as I like it (I bet it's fab in summer too) also we took our little yorkie (pippy) she had a fab time too and was super tired by the time we got home. Sally has yorkies too which are too cute, I wanted to keep them (hi doggies) sally is a really nice person, very helpful and will give recommendations to places to eat. Cleavers Lyng is a must...

Room Tip: We had the balcony room as we had a dog but in warmer weather it would be nice enjoying a glass of w...

What a beautiful setting and a very friendly welcome. I had booked a special room for a couple of nights and when we entered it all looked delightful. Sally had greeted us by taking our credit card details and took us upstairs. I struggled with my case and bits. She showed us how to open and shut the curtains with a cord! And how the TV would swivel on its stand. We also had a power shower over the bath. Bliss! Breakfast is up to 09.30.

Left on our own to unpack I noticed a tray under the bed. Oh! It's for our shoes. I decided to shower. Amazing power but no adequate means of keeping the water in the bath. I now have a wet room. And where oh where do I hang the towel. The TV seems a good spot! The following morning we hare down for breakfast just in time and it is superb hot and tasty tho non of the black pepper mills work. And I finish with a toasted croissant, a new one on me.

This is an idyllic setting and with a few tweaks would be wonderful. But we had a good giggle.

We stayed last weekend at this delightful country house, the room was excellent we had the balcony room with a lovely view over the Pevensey levels to the South Downs. We found after being there for an hour the stresses of the week and the drive just evaporated. The owners were very accommodating and helpful without being in any way intrusive, the Breakfasts were superb and all in all we found this to be excellent. It is an excellent base from which to explore the Sussex countryside or go to Glyndebourne the local taxi service was first class and the Sundial restaurant in Herstmonceaux was as good as you will find anywhere, we had one of the best meals we have eaten in years in a lovely setting with good service.

Room Tip: Go for the Balcony Room it is a bit more expensive but the views and peacefulness well worth the ext...

We had a 9 day stay at Cleavers Lyng with our little son. The room was all we could hope for; big, clean and beautifully kept. The breakfast is of high quality. The service in general was more than expected. The owners are very helpful in every way possible. Cleavers Lyng is very idyllic placed in a quite part of the East Sussex country side, however it is not remote or disconnected from the rest of Sussex, which makes it a great place to stay and drive to what you may wish to see in Sussex. We would very much like to have another stay at Cleavers Lyng. Maybe next time it may just be mom and dad.
