Our family loves this place, we have been going for many years, my Dad for over 50. I went as a kid and now take mine there. Nowhere else can you just go and explore on horseback, no guide required. We were there for eight days and still did not get out on all the trails or visit all the little lakes. Saw moose, bald eagles, plenty of deer, red tailed hawks, whiskey jacks coyotes all from a saddle. For me it's all about the riding which you can do three hours in the morning, and three in the afternoon or go all day, take a lunch and give your horses a break while you eat.
Ride the pipeline, ride to the Little Horse store and gymkhana grounds, canter along Schmidt Ranch or up Moose mountain. Sleep in a log cabin, eat in the lodge, hayrides, live country band, square dance night, movie nights, happy hour in the saloon (player piano, dart board, jukebox too) check out the cowboy gear in the little store, kayak or canoe on amazing Green lake (colour is unbelievable), Geocaches on the islands in the lake.
Food is great, dessert every night:) Wood stove in your cabin if you need it but be forewarned, build a SMALL fire in it!
Staff are great, friendly and Robert will match you up with a horse to fit your skill level. If you are experienced you may get a horse that knows how to open and close gates practically by themselves. Don't have boots? No worries, there is a Boot Barn you can borrow from.
Pine beetle damage made an impact about five yrs ago so some areas have logging roads but the grasses, fireweed and baby trembling aspens are doing an admirable job of making it beautiful. The trail map has not been updated....ever .....so trying to find some remote trails a can be an adventure, fortunately the horses are very happy to take you home and have an internal "barn radar". With 40 000 acres to explore there are many different kinds of terrain to explore.
If you are into lux hotels and room service this is not for you, shared wash house (lots of hot water) and sauna, no laundry so bring lots of clothes.
There are six clipper canoes and three, one person kayaks to play with, lots of life jackets for kids and adults so explore the really Green Lake, bring your swimsuit!
Can you tell I love this place? Bring your cowboy boots, hat and a bag of carrots for your horse:)
