“Lots of positives”
Reviewed 11 May 2013 via mobile

We stayed for 4 days on an unlimited golf package in May 2013. Positives-#1 Staff: every staff member we spoke to was professional and helpful. #2: Golf courses-well maintained, interesting but a little soft due to all the rain. Not overly busy. Could have done with a bit more sand in the bunkers. Unusually the 9 hole course is probably the best. Should run them as 3 nines. #3: Spa-relaxing, calming with great flexibility of treatments. Well worth a visit.
1 negative-our room was in the Residenza dei Castagni. Although a decent size, it was dark, dingy and rather than characterful it felt dated. The balcony was covered by the room upstairs and the dense tree canopy keeping it dark and damp all day. The golf course view was excellent, but only when you were standing looking over the chest high wall.

If you want to be close to Lake Garda but on hill with perfect view and more comfort than Palazzo Arzaga is perfect for you. This is real 5 STAR hotel. If you stay here you need to come with rent car or your own car -than you can visit many nice place on lake and many of them is from 10 to 30km from hotel. Would recomend to visit Sirmione and have dinner there in old town. In Arzaga also Moreto restaurant is perfect food. Spa and massage in Arzaga don't miss.

Room Tip: room with view on golf field.

We went to Palazzo Arzaga for a conference and also to tag on a weekend holiday. It was a nice, old style hotel and the reception area is not grand, the bar is small but quaint - but over a couple of days it grows on you. It is quite peaceful and the golf course (18 holes + a 9 holes both full size courses) were well maintained - if a little wet\soft when we were there.

The food is excellent - well prepared, cooked and presented.
The spa is very good, if a little expensive, but seemed to always have some "special deals" on.
The breakfast is sufficient for what is needed (eg fruits, cereals, cheese and ham, bread, some hot food like bacon, scrambled eggs etc) and in a very relaxed environment.
All of the staff from reception through to the waiters\waitresses were very helpful as you would expect.
Clarins toiletries in the bathrooms was a nice touch with robes etc.

Any negatives?
Although in the Lake Garda area, it has no view at all of the lake and is maybe 15 minutes away so that was disappointing for us.
The rooms on the 2nd floor are not large, and the window is small so try to get a room on the 1st floor.
Whilst it is planned as a 4 sided building around a courtyard, it does seem to lack some "impact" areas where the light and views come into being. I suppose I am thinking it has no great "wow" factor inside the hotel - but rather needs its terrace area to do this and so is dependent on good weather.

Would we stay here again if visiting the area again - probably not, unless on a golf package (as golf fees on Saturday were about 100 Euros per person), as we would either want to be closer into Verona or something with a view of the lake.

But overall our stay in this hotel was very pleasant and I can imagine it is a stand out place in the summer with the sunshine and drinks on the many terraces - if not a great deal to do if you do not play golf or want to do a spa and it is wet.
And the staff are very welcoming and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with large windows on the 1st floor.

We stayed for 5 days at Palazzo Arzaga and really enjoyed our stay. The place is beautiful, immersed in the countryside but very close to all villages on Lake Garda. The staff is very nice and helpful and service is outstanding.

Our room was in the residenza with a balcony over the golf course, it was very quiet and spacious.

We enjoyed the outdoor pool, the golf (Gary Player is nicer than the 18 hole course in our opinion) and the spa which is newly renovated as a Clarins institute. We ate at the restaurant only once and it was very nice. There are plenty of places to explore on Lake Garda so I would advise to get out of the hotel and have dinner in Sirmione, Desenzano etc.

We'd love to be back at some point!

We came here after booking a hotel on Garda that was not what it promised and i wasnt going to spend four nights cooped up in tiny room with husband and two teens.

Found this last minute so trooped up with our bags looking dishevelled after ten days on the road! Staff couldnt have been friendlier or nicer, not overbearing, just right. I can understand previous comments re rooms, we had two basic doubles, which are a bit dark, but the beds are comfortable. Bathrooms not really five star but we didnt consider the prices were five star.

But i loved it. The pool was great, the poolboy was very helpful. Didnt do steam or sauna, too hot! Breakfasts were lovely in the courtyard, spent an hour each day there. Didnt go the restaurant in the evening, as four of you makes it pricey. Went to some local places which were very good but you must have a car.

Enjoyed the golf too, we played 9 every day with rented clubs and it was good fun.

Definitely coming back.

Room Tip: Get an upgrade, the other rooms in main building look lovely.

This was our second stay at Palazzo Arzaga. In general we enjoyed our stay at the resort. Staff was very nice, and overall they do the very best they can with limited resources. As a customer I got the feeling that costs are being cut anywhere possible.

Golf: Jack Nicklaus II golf course is nice, long and wide. Green fees during the week were just under 60e for hotel guests which is very reasonable. Gary Player designed nine holes is more hilly but also worth playing!

Restaurants: For us the main downside were the restaurants, or the lack of them. I think this was the first five star resort where I would have had to pay an extra 10-15 dollars for an omelet with a room rate that included full buffet breakfast. We ate breakfast between nine and ten and many items had run out by that time and were partly replenished later. At dinner your options are limited to the one restaurant in the hotel, or you can take a taxi/drive 4-10 miles to nice restaurants. Michelin Guide 2012 gives the hotel restaurant four forks for the atmosphere but no stars for the food. Our experience with the dinner was once again mixed: grilled vegetables were really great, suckling pig was nothing I have eaten as such, fish plate was not what was ordered and black&white pasta was really interesting. Dessert was 12e/16$ for a Tiramisu but also very tasty! In general the food prices were pretty close to surrounding one star Michelin restaurants but wine prices were quite high to our liking.

Rooms: In general rooms were nice - nothing especially good, nothing especially bad. Some rooms have very old frescos on the walls but bathrooms and especially showers would need updating to 21st centry.

Would we return? Yes because of very nice staff but really no unless there are some major changes in how the food restaurants are organized.

Room Tip: There are many different kinds of rooms in two different buildings. Make sure you know which room yo...

I thought I ought to finally right up my experience having stayed at the Palazzo Arzaga back in May 2003. I had booked through a now long gone UK agent - Exclusive Italy - as part of our honeymoon. We stayed at the Palazzo for 10 nights having flown ito Verona where we picked up a hire car, and returned to the UK aboard the Orient Express. Well, this was our honeymoon!

On arrival at the hotel, the gatekeeper explained where I should go, past the treelined drive with the traffic lights he said. Of course, I missed it, and ended up parking in one of the upper car parks well away from the main entrance. Still, the bell boys' found us and took all the luggage from the car.

The hotel and the srroundings are absolutely stunning. Very peaceful and not at all cluttered. We stayed in a classic room, as my budget was modest, but the room was more than adequate, and quite frankly, you only need the room to sleep in. We were pleasantly surprised to be greeted in the room by a complimentary bottle of Champagne, which was nice! The bathroom was very nicely laid out. Sadly our room did not look over the golf course, but again, we were out either driving around the lake or exploring Venice, Verona, Modena etc.

We never ventured into the A La Carte restaurant, again due to budget constraints, but the Club House Grill was always more than adequate for our needs, and we had many a romantic evening meal looking at the rolling hills that grow into the Alps. We often had breakfast out on the terrace here too, and this was so nice, basking tin the already warm sun, listening to the bird song and watching the groundsmen preparing the golf courses.

We kept ourselves to ourselves for the most part, but the staff were always courteous and attentive when we needed their assistance. I am an avid F1 fan, and as there was a race on during our stay I shipped off my Wife to the spa. I then polished off the contents of the mini bar while I watched the Austrian Grand Prix. My wife came back glowing, I was a little tipsy - I suspect that night our daughter was conceived as she is a honeymoon baby!

All too soon our stay came to an end, the staff brought our car to the main entrance and loaded the luggage.

Of course, one sees things through rose tinted glasses on such occasions as a honeymoon, but my experience of the Palazzo is one of effortless luxury, attentive courteous staff and well presented rooms. The food was always to a good standard. We made fair use of the room service as we often arrived too late to go through the effort of changing for dinner. Always arrived in a timely manner and very tasty too!

No downsides to our stay at all only fond memories in abundance. SO much so that, next year is our 10th anniversary and I hope to surprise my Wife by returning for a short break - leaving the kids with the parents!

NB Please ignore the 'when did I travel' bit, it does not - surprisngly - go as far back as 2003!!
