This was a return visit, having stayed here back in 2003 on our honeymoon.

Expectations therefore were high. After much helpful correspondance with the reservations coordinator, we stayed for two nights on 10th and 11th May 2013.

We were welcomed at the gatehouse, and the gatekeeper explained clearly where to go, giving us a map for guidance. Upon driving up to the entrance we were greeted by name by the bellstaff, who opened the door for my wife, took our luggage and parked the car.

Check was very painless, we were given drinks and made to feel very comfortable, with a 'welcome back to the Plazzo Arzaga'. Our restaurant bookings were confirmed. We were taken to the room and the luggage was delivered. All very efficient.

The room - the same as we had on our honeymoon, very important for us that - was much bigger than I remembered. It is an executive room on the 1st floor, overlooking the gardens.

A complimetary bottle of Prosecco was brought up to the room.

In the bathroom there was a good selection of complimetary Clarins miniatures.

The room has a safe, a large wardrobe and chest of drawers - more than enough space for even a lengthy stay. Perhaps my one gripe about the room is the size of the television. Whilst it is not a tiny TV set, viewing from the bed means it is on the small side - but this is a mere niggle, and we were not here to watch the TV!

Our first night we had a reservation in the il Moretto restaurant. A very pleasant area in which to dine, The food was very well presented - not overly fussy - and good portions too. We were still very tired from an early start and a day driving around Lake Garda, so we were not as relaxed as we could be. Nonetheless we enjoyed the food, and the staff were most courteous.

Breakfast was served either in the courtyard or the Galleria. Plenty of choice and an impressive display. Cols meats, pastries, cereals and cooked breakfast and an array of drinks. I chose the closest to a good honest 'Full English' which was spicy small sausages, bacon, grilled cherry tomatoes and scrambled egg. My wife had a croissant and some smoked salmon.

The bellstaff offered to bring the car up to the main gate, but we declined as we wanted to take a stroll around the grounds first.

The second evening we dined in the Taverna, for a selection of dishes from the local region. This was a set menu at a set price. The food was very well presented and showcased the best of the local produce. We struggled to complete the entire course, so had to skip one. A very nice experience however.

Our final breakfast in the courtyard with bright morning sun streaming into the courtyard - really very relaxing. Had this not been a whistle-stop return, we would have spent more time lazing in the sun...

Check uot was as painless as check in, car was brought up to the main entrance and the luggage put in the boot while we settled up.

All in all then, a return visit every bit as enjoyable as the original.

For anyone considering this hotel, it is worthwhile noting that while it is close to Lake Garda, you will need to arrange transport to get about. It takes about an hour to drive to Verona airport/train station, even less time if you take the toll roads. All major destinations are clearly signposted.

We arranged car hire with our flights and picked up/dropped off the car at Verona airport. Google maps/street view is your friend if you are nervous or unsure as to navigating your way out the airport, so I would recommend a little pre trip research.

From the hotel, the lake is reached by car on the SP4 in under 10 minutes. and you can drive around the lake with the most stunning views.....

Dear Mr. Stuart W.,

We wish to thank you for the beautiful thoughts you wrote on TripAdvisor (both last year in regard to your honeymoon stay and this year), but more than this, we deeply thank you for your return visit. It is always a pleasure knowing that our guests are happy with the service we provide and it means a lot for us when returning guests had stayed at palazzo Arzaga such a long time ago, on their honeymoon, they come back to visit us and discover that hospitality is not only a word for us, but it has a great important meaning for all of our staff.

Thank you for your note about the television size, we will keep your suggestion in consideration.

Again thank you for visiting us again and we look forward to your next visit.

Our kindest regards

We stayed for 4 days on an unlimited golf package in May 2013. Positives-#1 Staff: every staff member we spoke to was professional and helpful. #2: Golf courses-well maintained, interesting but a little soft due to all the rain. Not overly busy. Could have done with a bit more sand in the bunkers. Unusually the 9 hole course is probably the best. Should run them as 3 nines. #3: Spa-relaxing, calming with great flexibility of treatments. Well worth a visit.
1 negative-our room was in the Residenza dei Castagni. Although a decent size, it was dark, dingy and rather than characterful it felt dated. The balcony was covered by the room upstairs and the dense tree canopy keeping it dark and damp all day. The golf course view was excellent, but only when you were standing looking over the chest high wall.

If you want to be close to Lake Garda but on hill with perfect view and more comfort than Palazzo Arzaga is perfect for you. This is real 5 STAR hotel. If you stay here you need to come with rent car or your own car -than you can visit many nice place on lake and many of them is from 10 to 30km from hotel. Would recomend to visit Sirmione and have dinner there in old town. In Arzaga also Moreto restaurant is perfect food. Spa and massage in Arzaga don't miss.

Room Tip: room with view on golf field.

We went to Palazzo Arzaga for a conference and also to tag on a weekend holiday. It was a nice, old style hotel and the reception area is not grand, the bar is small but quaint - but over a couple of days it grows on you. It is quite peaceful and the golf course (18 holes + a 9 holes both full size courses) were well maintained - if a little wet\soft when we were there.

The food is excellent - well prepared, cooked and presented.
The spa is very good, if a little expensive, but seemed to always have some "special deals" on.
The breakfast is sufficient for what is needed (eg fruits, cereals, cheese and ham, bread, some hot food like bacon, scrambled eggs etc) and in a very relaxed environment.
All of the staff from reception through to the waiters\waitresses were very helpful as you would expect.
Clarins toiletries in the bathrooms was a nice touch with robes etc.

Any negatives?
Although in the Lake Garda area, it has no view at all of the lake and is maybe 15 minutes away so that was disappointing for us.
The rooms on the 2nd floor are not large, and the window is small so try to get a room on the 1st floor.
Whilst it is planned as a 4 sided building around a courtyard, it does seem to lack some "impact" areas where the light and views come into being. I suppose I am thinking it has no great "wow" factor inside the hotel - but rather needs its terrace area to do this and so is dependent on good weather.

Would we stay here again if visiting the area again - probably not, unless on a golf package (as golf fees on Saturday were about 100 Euros per person), as we would either want to be closer into Verona or something with a view of the lake.

But overall our stay in this hotel was very pleasant and I can imagine it is a stand out place in the summer with the sunshine and drinks on the many terraces - if not a great deal to do if you do not play golf or want to do a spa and it is wet.
And the staff are very welcoming and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with large windows on the 1st floor.

We stayed for 5 days at Palazzo Arzaga and really enjoyed our stay. The place is beautiful, immersed in the countryside but very close to all villages on Lake Garda. The staff is very nice and helpful and service is outstanding.

Our room was in the residenza with a balcony over the golf course, it was very quiet and spacious.

We enjoyed the outdoor pool, the golf (Gary Player is nicer than the 18 hole course in our opinion) and the spa which is newly renovated as a Clarins institute. We ate at the restaurant only once and it was very nice. There are plenty of places to explore on Lake Garda so I would advise to get out of the hotel and have dinner in Sirmione, Desenzano etc.

We'd love to be back at some point!
