Art Deco house restored with flair and attention to detail by the well-known owners of the Dutch House (next door). Still a few things to do since opening only recently, but bedrooms very comfortable, and food fantastic. A bit close to occasionally noisy Bandarawela, but generally well situated on the route to/from Ella.

Room Tip: All looked good

A very new addition run by Rodney and Eric of Dutch House fame, the Adelphi has five rooms, a lounge and dining room. Styled on art-deco designs, it is very comfortable and the cooking is of a very high standard. Afternoon tea is a welcome treat, with excellent local jams. One of the five rooms is upstairs, and is the best if it is available. One note, although the food really is good, there is no alcohol sold, but they welcome byo and will happily chill it, all at no cost. The smart option is to buy a bottle of gin duty free because imported gin is £40 a bottle, but there is a Cargills Food City about 1 mile away in Bandarawela. For any railway buffs the local stations have much of interest, all 18th and 19th century English manufacture. And a final thought, the ride up from Columbo or nearer by train is tortuous, with one visitor to the Adelphi reporting sea sickness. A cheaper, easier option to get a feel is to take a local service one or two stops and get your driver to meet you.

We stayed 2 days here because the Melheim ressort had lost our booking. It is a small villa with 5 rooms that just opened in December, managed by the owners of Dutch House. The idea is to have a place to relax with good service, and to exchange stories with other guests. There is wifi, but no swimming pool and no TV. The service is certainly excellent, but a lot was still missing. Outside furniture still had to be installed. The hotel has no alcohol license. It is a few kilometers from town, were you can find this. There are no arrangements for drivers, best to arrive before dark. Lots of barking dogs at night, and a mosque wake-up call at 5:00. Garden is very nice.
