A lovely old fortified house just a few miles from Hexham. Wandered around the site and inside the rooms etc with some information boards. Chatted to the new site manager ( had only re-opened after the winter) who gave us a insight into the site.
It was a little difficult to get to.... tiny, roads through farm yards etc.... but well worth it. It would make a nice place to visit on a sunny day with a picnic.... I'm sure there would be some walks in the area too.

Thank Jaynie L

A typical small Northumbrian castle, better preserved than most made for an interesting couple of hours. The medieval cookery exhibition was fascinating!

This Castle does not have a huge amount of artefacts, exhibitions or displays, but not every site needs that. This is still an impressive building, worth the visit if you have a membership. (Whether the standalone charge of £4 is worth it, I'm not so sure.)
Well maintained, with a helpful member of staff.

We felt that there was not much here although did like the children's activity book. We arrived at the castle along a very narrow lane and I'm glad to say that we didn't meet any other vehicles - watch which way you enter the castle from.

It's evident from other reviews that you can't please everyone , but this slightly remote setting leads you to a wonderful historical example of a fortified English manor house .As with most places of historical interest under English Heritage stewardship , this was well maintained and the solitary staff member most welcoming and informative . It pays to buy the booklet which is beautifully presented and gives a great amount of detail on the origins amd subsequent history . Certainly well worth the detour ! Just watch out for the single track approach and bloody great tractors.

If it's only nice tea-rooms your interested in , drive on.
