“fine and comfortable hotel, but you can eat elsewhere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2011

booked in advance got me a cheap staying thanks to Venere's reservation, otherwise is not the lowest price hotel in granoble surroundings.
fine hotel with most of what you need for business (wifi isn't free), it need a refurbishment, fine dinner (not really so cheap) even if the restaurant as in most public places lets you eat in your neighbour's dish.

We stayed here just one night, en route between Burgundy and the Riviera. Grenoble is well worth a visit: lots of good museums to visit, and surrounded by gorgeous, snow-capped peaks. The hotel has secure parking and comfortable rooms, and serves a very good breakfast. It's a little out of the way, but our GPS (indispensable for driving around France, especially arriving in a strange city after dark) found it without difficulty.

I recently stayed here when visiting a French family living locally. The position is good and the rooms were plenty big enough. I stayed on the 3rd floor and had a new bathroom whilst my brother in law was on the 3rd floor and his bathroom was tired. Nevertheless we would both return. Unfortunately we stayed over a weekend and the restaurant was not open. Breakfast was OK. Staff were friendly and helpful. The lift did breakdown but was quickly repaired. The swimming pool looked very clean although too cold for this time of year.

Stayed at this hotel at many occasions and can surely say it's in a convenient location.
The private parking is good but can be a bit full depending on the season.
Great views of the surrounding mountain area from most of the rooms I stayed in.
The restaurant is great and also attracts many visitors from outside the hotel.
Breakfast is avarage but sufficient.
For sure I'll stay here again on my next trip to the area.

The hotel area is clean and well maintained, the garden also looks very nice, the wi fi is ok, there's a safe in the room. And these are all the good things I can say about this hotel.

The stay: we arrived at Dauphitel as a group of 11 people who have booked 8-9 nights each, all working for the same company and planning another visit in less than 2 months for additional 10 nights. We arrived at the hotel on 1st of May, Thursday which happened to be a bank holiday in France. We were informed by the lady at the reception that the restaurant in the hotel and the bar won't be working this evening and the next 3 days (the official working time of the restaurant was Monday to Friday and apparently the employees have decided to take a long weekend no matter how many people were staying in the hotel at that time). We were lucky that we'll be able to have breakfast every day, though.

The breakfast: the only meal for the day, priced 10 Euros, was not very rich, and in addition the pieces of baguette proposed to the customers were always from yesterday (I think that this was a secret magic trick used by the personnel to make you eat less). Additionally there were also strict rules to be followed when having breakfast - for ex. it was mandatory to use a tray when bringing your stuff to the table, because this way it was easier for the lady working there to pick up the dishes. If somebody tried to avoid the tray usage, she started speaking very quickly in French, pointing at the trays and making it clear that you are not at home and the rules in the hotel are for everybody!!!

Warning: if you decide to stay at this hotel and have breakfast, be aware that you'll be charged 10 Euros even if you have had only a cup of coffee!

The restaurant: On the third day (3rd of May) another group came in the hotel (a local hokey team) - you can imagine our surprise when we saw that for them the restaurant and the bar were working. They were having lunch and dinner, there were people serving them, but for us this special arrangement was not possible. We had to go and have lunch and dinner outside.

On 7th of May (Wednesday) we were informed that 8th of May is another bank holiday in France, followed by another long weekend and the restaurant will be closed for the next 5 days. On 8th of May in the early afternoon a colleague of mine and I decided to take some pizzas for lunch from a restaurant close to the hotel. When we entered the hotel with the boxes, we were immediately followed by the receptionist who told us that it is forbidden to eat there. When we asked her what are we supposed to do when the restaurant is closed, she came up with a solution - we will be allowed to eat our pizzas if we order drinks from the bar - so we had our small victory: the bar was working for us, at last!

The rules: As you probably have already understood, there were some strict rules to be followed in this hotel.
- Although the nice pool which you can see at the pictures was cleaned every day, when one of the visitors decided to go out for a swim, he was stopped by the receptionist and informed that the outdoor pool is closed and can't be used. And - of course - he was trying to use the wrong towel - there was a special rule for the towels as well.

- One evening we came back from dinner around 11 and we wanted to stay outside for a last drink before we go to bed. After giving us the drinks, the receptionist told us that we are not allowed to stay in the garden, because it was 11 pm. As there were some smokers in the group, we went infront of the hotel so they can have a cigarette. When we went back into the building and decided to finish our drinks in the lobby, the receptionist turned off the lights. Apparently we had to go to bed.

- Some of the colleagues decided to order tea or coffee to be delivered to their rooms in the mornings. But few of them were informed that there were only 4 kettles in the hotel which had been already taken. Ooops.

Probably I should mention that there's a big dog, as big as a donkey in fact, who apparently lives in the hotel, so if you're afraid of dogs, this is not your place to stay.

My final remark will be about the attitude of the personnel. I would say that they were polite most of the time (one guy from the night shift can be excluded from my further statement, he was really nice). But the overal feeling the customers are left with, is that they are some intruders in this property and therefore they aren't very welcome. Although some of us tried to explain the receptionists our position and stated clearly that we were not happy with the service we received, there was no reaction from their side. I don't think they understood how absurd the situation was. The worst thing is that in my opinion this whole situation was created by the management of Dauphitel. Well done!

I stayed on at this hotel for two nights whilst on business in the area. Reception staff were very helpful and spoke good English. The room was spacious, very clean and had good facilities (Free Wifi, minibar, safe, umpteen TV channels etc.)

Minibar was overpriced, but find me any hotel that sells you a cheap can of Coke!

Bathroom was also clean and shower was powerful and water instantly warm.

Breakfast in separate room and on different floor to hotel restaurant (which is next to reception). I did not eat evening meals at hotel, but breakfast was satisfactory for 8 Euro.

Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel, it's representative of the good standards I expect to see in a Best Western hotel.
