Wilmar Bed & Breakfast
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 24 February 2014

This is a late review but I stayed at Wilmar B&B with my boyfriend for 2 nights in July and it was absolutely fantastic! This was our first visit to Skye and I wish it was for longer. We were lucky to have glorious weather and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. Ian and Marcella make you feel so welcome. The rooms are lovely and very comfortable and the food is delicious - awesome choice for breakfast too :) The location is great as well and it is so near the Old Inn pub which I would also recommend. I can't fault this place in any way and would highly recommend - I know i'll be back at some point!

Marcella and Ian provide elegant hospitality with the comfort of home, a very comfortable home! Every detail is a thing of beauty and quality. After staying here, we were spoiled and wondered why they don’t have a 10 star rating when we compared their 4 stars to other 4 star B&B’s. The food is exceptional – eggs from their hens with flavor unmatched anywhere, a new experience of porridge, fresh bread, homemade jams. We extended our stay to see more of Skye, but also because of how comfortable we were and how welcome we were made to feel. And, being in an authentic croft house on their beautiful loch was a treat.

Found the house clean and comfortable. The breakfasts where tasty. I think they had the best porridge of the entire Scotland vacation. The freshly made sourdough toast with jams was great. Breakfasts at the Wilmar very good. It was nice that the Old Inn (restaurant) was close enough to walk for dinner. The cottage garden on the street side of the house was charming. The scenery of the loch from the little street is wonderful. The house was warm, and cozy on the cold rainy evenings.

We stayed at the Wilmar in early October 2013 and just loved it. The location is great for getting around on Skye. There are some wonderful hikes right up the road and be sure not to miss the Quirang hike. It was phenomenal! There is a charming little pub (The Old Inn) within walking distance of the Wilmar that we just loved. Very friendly, good food and an ideal location. As for the Wilmar, we have nothing but good things to say. Marcella was absolutely delightful as was the Wilmar. Very warm and welcoming. We had the Edinburgh room and it was excellent. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious. When we travel back to Skye (which we will) we will definitely stay there again! Thank you for a lovely time. :)

This was certainly one of the high points of our wonderful time in Ireland. First, the drive from inverness through wild, wooly scenery was truly awesome. Finding the little road to Carbost was a winning moment. And, finally, the gracious greeting by Marcella and Ian into their warm and comfortably elegant home, was most welcome. They did all they could to make our stay special, mainly their fun and friendly way with people. We felt like old friends!
Our bedroom was spacious, with a sitting room down the hall where we were able to relax. Evening at the Olde Town Inn just down the street was a vibrant and fun time, with a music jam and friendly folk. Exploring their yard in the company of their chickens (m-m-m fresh eggs!), looking out over the loch, and then walking through the little town was great fun. Their delicious breakfasts by candlelight in the lovely dining room rounded out the wonder of their offering. This jewel of a spot is definitely worth the trip out to the Isle of Skye.

We felt very welcome here, and our double room facing the loch was so beautifully decorated, making it warm, cosy and spacious. There is a lounge for guests at the front of the house, so it was nice to spend time there with our in-laws who we were travelling with. The breakfast was excellent - I think it was my favourite porridge in the whole of our Scottish trip, and that's saying something. The pub down the road was fantastic for dinners, drinks and ceilidhs, and we even managed to put on a load of washing in their hostel section while we were having dinner and dry it back in the airing room at our B&B. Talisker Distillery is just down the road. What more could you want! Marcella and Ian were lovely hosts.

The little town of Carbost may be hard to find but the Wilmar Bed & Breakfast is worth finding!! (if you are not careful you'll miss the turn for the Talisker Distillery which is right down the street from Wilmar. There is a campground/store/restaurant in the middle of nowhere where the turn off is... you'll end up in Portree if you miss it.) Once you make the turn onto the single roadway, you will drive a bit towards the water. There is another sneaky turn off to the right to get to Carbost. If you are driving in the dark be careful not to miss this turn as well.

Ian and Marcella are gracious hosts and have a lot to suggest should you ask them about their Isle of Skye. They have a reading/TV room with books about the history, birds, hikes, maps, you name it. They will help in whatever way they can. It felt like we were old friends staying here. That is how kind and welcoming they are.

Wilmar is a small b & b (only 2 rooms to be rented) but it is quiet, beautifully kept, and memorable of the wonderful people of Scotland and Skye!

You choose what you want for breakfast from a menu selection. There is a set time to eat and the food is filling, delicious, and typically Scottish. Day one I had oatmeal and an egg dish. Day two oatmeal was really all I needed.

Wherever you go on Skye you will love it and have a great place. But for us, the quiet, welcoming Wilmar and the wonderful Ian and Marcella, our gracious hosts, made all the difference. We would go back for sure.

Room Tip: This is a bed and breakfast so it is very home-like. Our room had 2 twin beds and the batroom inside...
