“grubby”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

we have stayed 3 tines at Moana Sands Hotel and wont be back. They have not replied to emails explaining the shabby conditions. staff are excellent but owner needs a wake up to improve the sub standard living conditions, old blood stains on wall, filthy rails up stairs, linen shabby and worn out ends of sheets, chairs on deck need painting on grubby arm rests, toe nail clippings and chewing gum on carpet, sticky remains of tape on new windows that had been put in several months previously, shower hot water cutting in and out all the time while we were there for 10 days.
It has got to the stage that it would be embarrassing to recommend the resort in the future

Rarotonga was not only a beautiful place with beautiful beaches , it also had the nicest people. Staying at Moana sands villas was very comfortable , the accommodation was clean! spacious and in a stunning location. It was all complimented by friendly staff..Marilyn and Marshall went out of their way to make our stay comfortable.

Room Tip: A comfortable nights sleep is important in achieving the most of your stay....I always choose clean...

Moana sands beach front hotel was only a bit better then a back packers. The staff were not friendly at all and when we were to leave back home(thank god) the staff member took us in 3 hours before our flight so he could go home due to being the only ones departing on this night. this left us with no sleep (due to bad flight times) and having to wait up an extra 3 hours due to the staff wanting to go home early. when i got home finally we were so shattered due to staying up all night. This wouldn't have mattered if the experience was enjoyable… The staff weren't welcoming at all and seemed almost as if we were in there way and a pain, which is not a good feeling when you are on holiday. The breakfast was borderline Un-edible and does not match the 'buffet' I had in mind. With breakfast being delivered in the afternoon for the next mooring, fruit was unfresh and bread was hard. It was very basic and not what I was imaging from previous experiences. The rooms were shabby basic and not welcoming, everything felt dirty and looked old and used. If you aren't spending anytime inside then it may be all right for some as they were very basic, but having little children I found it hard being in an unpleasant dark space. The front door onto the beach could not lock from the outside so if going away we had to walk around and lock/unlock from the main reception area which was a pain due to spending so much time on the beach. There was only a few beach chairs and no where near enough for the people staying which was annoying so didn't sound anytime relaxing/reading as they were always taken. One of the kayaks is busted and half sunk making it hard to paddle back and dangerous. only plus side is that the cleaning ladies did a great job at folding towels etc. and also the snorkelling gear was great. how ever staff didn't know anything about our free drink or bike hire so left without those which is a pain as they said they didn't have any bikes at the time. the restrauant was almost always closed(i wouldn't even call it a restaurant) it was a small 7x7m deck with 4 unsteady wooden tables and fold up chairs. I'm not a fussy person but for the price we paid I would expect a little more then this… The food was disappointing the most. The same thing for our 12 day holiday.I would 1000x not recommend this for anyone. Was tacky and not a relaxing time. Had a nice view but not worth the price! And being woken up at 6am by staff walking around which is unpleasant. Would recommend The rarotongan and edgewatwer resorts as they are a lot nicer!

for a more relaxing fun and memorable holiday. We had friends who stayed at the other moana sands but they all liked our Taikura apartment the best out of all! The beachfront villas are also very nice. I will definately be back!!

The dated Moana Sands Hotel in Rarotonga provided just enough to tick the boxes. It was clean. Since it was Christmas their restaurant was closed due to low vacancy.. Breakfast was supposedly provided. This obligation was fulfilled by a staff member bringing us a covered tray at 4 pm the day before bearing a small bowl of cut up fruit & dry cereal . Coffee was left up to us using instant packets in the room. The restaurant suddenly reopened the morning we left when 3 more rooms of people checked in. The bathroom window opened onto the main passageway where people had to pass by in order to get to their rooms or exit the premises. Beach chaise lounges were in disrepair and few in number. Staff were courteous, and the shower was great. The waters and reef in Rarotonga are tired, over used, cloudy. Once there was enough.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

Much like many of the reviews here, the view is outstanding! We had a week at the Moana Sands hotel and i could happily have stayed longer. Lovely staff who were really friendly (our cleaners particularly liked our ongoing jigsaw!). Snorkels and flippers are readily available and the fish are totally amazing. We pretty much did that all day. We rented push bikes one day for a bit of an explore of that side of the island, and rented a car for a few days too to venture out. Do the markets (saturday), do the abandoned hotel (just past wigmores supermarket) and visit the waterfall (also just past wigmores - although best visited when there is actually some water flowing). We did a combination of eating in (microwave and electric fry pan was just perfect for us) and dining out. The hidden spirit cafe is just up the road and did us the most amazing dining experience. Rooms are clean and basic but perfectly comfortable. No we didnt switch the TV on once (why would you?). Attached restaurant did a simple but filling continental breakfast and the sunday BBQ was delicious.

Yes there might be fancier hotels on the island but you simply wont beat the snorkeling, the view and the sunsets. Great value package and I'll definitely go back :-)

We stayed here as part of a package holiay. There were 4 of us and we had been given a connecting room without having to ask. The hotel is pefectly located and perfectly suitable for our needs. Basic cooking facilities, the beach right outside the window, snorkelling equipment you can just borrow and the breakfasts were great. The staff were very friendly and gave us good information about local sights and things to do, Very close to Muri, the local supermarket, the abandoned Sheraton Hotel (which is well worth a look) and other amenities. Will definitely go there again.
