“BEST ISLAND HOLIDAY EVER!!!!”
Reviewed 6 July 2009

My parents and I stayed at Moana Sands for a week and had an amazing time!! the Moana Sands is the perfect place to stay if you want to go on an island holiday. The accomodation was superb - very modern facilities, spacious and very clean. We had our own kitchen area which was brand new- we loved this as we enjoyed being able to do our own food as opposed to having to go out all the time. The rooms were thoroughly cleaned daily by the lovely cleaners.

The location was the best. We were right on the beachfront. It was a tiny walk into the sea for a swim, the snorkeling was great! i have never been to a place where the snorkling was so close! it felt like our own private beach! it was a very peaceful place to stay. We have been on island holidays before and our sole purpose is to be able to relax and have a break from our busy lives. Moana Sands was the perfect place to do that. It is very peaceful and relaxing!

The Service was outstanding. The manager was the best we have come across. She was very attentive, often visiting us to check all was well and giving us fantastic advice about various activities to do on the island. She was very polite and friendly. The other staff were all excellent also!

I will definately be going back to Moana Sands next time I go to Rarotonga. I would recommend this as a place to stay for anyone who is going to stay in Rarotonga. Our best Island holiday by far! I can't wait to go back.

After exploring the many hotels and beaches in Rarotonga, we were so pleased we stayed at Moana Sands. It was peaceful, the staff were friendly, island bus stops at the front door, there is a cool restaurant on-site plus self-catering facilities provided...all this… right on the sand…on the best beach!!!

We stayed at the Moana Sands Hotel because our travel companions had stayed there 3 years previously. They were sure we would fall in love with the hotel and its location, and they were so right – it was all ideal for us. The hotel has an excellent site on the white-sanded Titikaveka Beach and the best stretch of the Island’s lagoon. We had a ground floor room which opened out onto a tiled patio and from there a short walk across freshly-combed sand past the coconut palms took us down to the water’s edge. There were ample sun loungers, kayaks and snorkeling equipment, and the lagoon fish were amazing to watch and feed in the clear water. The view from the hotel was stunning with a beach in both directions and waves gently breaking over the reef a few hundred metres away. The accommodation was perfectly adequate although showing a little tiredness here and there. Nevertheless, the place was clean and tidy, and fresh blooms were placed on the bed when the room was cleaned every day. The hotel issued vouchers for use in the adjoining Paw Paw Patch restaurant for breakfast of fruit, cereals, toast, tea/coffee, which was perfectly adequate for us in the warm weather. The restaurant also served excellent food in the evenings with a good choice on the menu at reasonable prices, and the hosts Meagan and Tooks were keen to ensure customers were happy. Their staff even recommended we used ‘Seafaris’ for a sports fishing trip – and we weren’t disappointed; we caught the first Marlin (71Kg) of the season. For a small fee, Meagan’s staff also provided a salad to go with our BBQ of home-caught tuna. One evening, the Paw Paw Patch provided live entertainment from a female singer-guitarist that will probably turn professional she was that good! A store is situated about 10 minutes down the road, and so it was possible to grab a snack if we didn’t want to make the trip to Avarua. The island bus service stopped outside the hotel and was cheap and very reliable with Avarua some 20 minutes away. As a consequence, we saw no need to hire personal transport, but instead worked with the bus schedule to go places. We quickly came to accept that life went at the relaxed pace of ‘island time’. Through the hotel, we booked to go on the Island Experience evening, which was most informative and entertaining. The hotel manager, Althea Oldman was helpfulness personified, and her staff were all equally supportive and cooperative. Although the guest internet equipment was awaiting technical intervention, Althea ensured we were able to send essential emails through the office to keep in touch with home. It’s true that reception was not always manned, but staff were there at core times, which was what we would have expected for a modest establishment of this nature. I cannot understand some of the overly negative comments about the hotel. It is what it is – a little piece of superbly situated quiet heaven which is away from the bustle and raucousness of the pool-side crowd. Book with confidence, take off your watch and relax in a spot of paradise. We will certainly do our utmost to return.

Just a quick review. Having been to Rarotonga 4 times I have stayed twice at Moana Sands. The location is fantastic and for beachfront price you can't beat it. Moana score 10/10 for location and value for money. The accomodation can also be upgraded by booking the the third foor which has better furniture/space facilities etc. The second and first floor are fine though and get a 3 star rating. When I go on holiday I like to look out over beach and ocean and you are guaranteed of that whatever room you book. I found the staff especially the mangeress very helpful and friendly. The entrance foyer could do with a makeover but not a big concern for me. The Paw Paw patch is a good restaurant especially enjoyed the $30 buffet barbecue night on a Sunday the day we arrived.
Other great places to eat were , Tamarind House 5/5 and CrownBeach Resort 5/5
For cheap but great value for money also Club Raro has a a lot to offer. I was impressed since I had read a lot of bad reviews. If you have a bigger budget and want higher standards you could also look at Crown Beach Resort and The Little Poynesian.

Rarotonga the best of the all the tropical islands I have visited, make sure hire a scooter or car and visit the resorts for a drink or meal:)

This was the second time I've travelled to the Cook Islands... and I have to say that it did not disappoint, which was largely due to the fact that we stayed at Moana Sands! It's a lovely small hotel right on a gorgeous beach... you just couldn't get a better view first thing in the morning. The rooms were clean and the cleaning staff would add small touches like a flower on your pillow each day. We spent most of our time on the lovely white sandy beach on our doorstep, or at the Pawpaw Patch restaurant - divine food! Oh, and make sure you take advantage of the BBQ - it's a must. The water was crystal blue and snorkeling couldn't have been better! We even saw a turtle! The staff were friendly and always smiling and willing to help, in particular the manager was happy to go out of her way to give us ideas and suggestions for our time on Rarotonga - like the fantastic Saturday market! We really didn't need to go anywhere else... Moana Sands had everything.

My husband, daughter and I just returned from a 3 week stay in the Cook Islands. We stayed in three different locations, with the Moana Sands being the last place for us to stay. I had picked this hotel due to the fact that we could do some of our own cooking and that it was supposed to have great snorkeling. What a disappointment it was. First of all, our transfer to the Moana was made extremely difficult as the bus company had no record of us already pre-paying for our ride to the hotel. After much frustration, we finally made it to the Moana Sands. But there was no one there to meet us! No chilled juice for us! Apparently the office hours are only for a short while in the morning and if you arrive in the afternoon the only person there will be is the cleaning lady, who doesn't seem to understand English very well and has no clue about any hotel policy. The room we were given was very dated and shabby. The toilet barely flushed and the only way to cook was an electric fry pan and ancient microwave. We opened the tiny fridge and a gecko jumped out at us. Other than that there was a tetra pack of milk in there that expired in 2003! I did like the view from our room but that was about it. The beds were very uncomfortable and the floor was extremely greasy feeling. There were no little touches like flowers anywhere, and the walls were painted gray. Very dreary. We were also disappointed in the fact that the Pawpaw Patch restaurant was closed for 2 weeks. There really isn't anywhere else to eat and taking a bus to get a meal all the time was tiring. We eventually had to rent a car which made our last week bearable as we could escape the Moana Sands and spend the day somewhere nice. We were shocked at how few fish there were in the area, and how cloudy the water was. Not good visibility at all. The sand is quite silty there and I'm sure this has something to do with it. Also, a lot of locals fish this area, and that probably accounts for the lack of fish. At the previous place we stayed the snorkeling was awesome, with schools of beautiful fish, so we could tell the difference!
Another problem we had was with the breakfast "buffet". A little fruit, bread and cereal. A very poor selection, and we were always ordering off the menu for extras. We also were never given breakfast vouchers when we arrived and trying to get our breakfast, with no hotel staff present, due to their lack of office hours, was again very difficult. We loved Rarotonga, but we would never recommend this hotel to anyone! It was overpriced, understaffed ,loud, and very dated. I'm surprised at all the good comments written about this hotel as everyone we talked to who were staying there at the same time of us seemed to feel the same way, and were also very disappointed. If you are looking for a beautiful place for a holiday, the Cook Islands are wonderful, but I would never stay at the Moana Sands again!

This hotel was in a pretty good location and was right on the beach front, there was some good snorkelling straight off the beach.

The room itself looked a bit dated and I feel not quite value for money considering the £120 per night we paid – you are definitely paying for the location.

The service was also pretty lack lustre and the breakfast appalling – the choice was a few cereals and toast with a bowl of tinned fruit and that was it. Now I’ve had many of continental breakfasts but none quite as poor as this one, I think they used the cheapest ingredients possible. Quite a contrast to the dinner we had in the Paw Paw Patch restaurant the night before – which was excellent. Definitely make sure you book a table though as it was very busy the night we were there.

We also had a fabulous meal at the Little Polynesian next door, which looked like paradise, I’m sure the rooms here would have been considerably more expensive.
