Cameron House on Loch Lomond

We stayed one night at Cameron House Hotel to "treat" ourselves to a bit of luxury. It's in a lovely setting by Loch Lomond and had nice grounds - including golf course(s).

The room allocated was on the ground floor and had a view of the shrubs outside. Since the decoration and furnishings were dark; there was little natural light (the shrubs blocked that) and the lighting was "subtle", we felt little inclination to stay in the room more than necessary. I appreciate that others no doubt had lovely views looking out on to the loch but this was not our experience. When we commented on the drab room at check-out the following day we were advised that the rooms were due to be remodelled, which may have happened since, but it was hoped this hadn't spoiled our stay!

The Marina Restaurant & Bar was a reasonable walk from the main building and looked a nice modern place to dine - quite informal, and possibly popular with the golfers after a round.

We dined at the Smollets Restaurant in the main building where the food was very good and the service friendly and attentive.

The leisure pool was fairly large and luckily when we visited it was nice and quiet and unlike previous reviews we found it perfectly clean - no complaints there. For fans of squash you'll be surprised to find that there were a few courts in the same building.

We were disappointed with the drab room and some of the public areas inside the hotel looked in need of brightening up. Breakfast was self-serve.

We have stayed in many better hotels which did not have the Cameron House 5 star rating. It's nice but not great.

Stayed for 1 night on the 18 December, on arrival was told the swimming pool and changing rooms were unavailable due to the Loch flooding. We were dissapointed as one of the reasons we chose the hotel was for the liesure facitlites, after explaining this on arrival are rate was reduced from £149 DDB to £99. My Wife and I still had a great couple of days as the hotel's setting if breathtaking specially looking out over the loch at the snow clad Ben Lomond. We had trouble choosing between which resturant to eat in as both menus looked fantastic, we finally chose the smollets and was very glad as the chicken liver pate was divine. Anyone who's wanting a night away in a nice hotel at a reasonable price ( no idea how the last reviewer was charged £300, especially in winter?? ) you couldn't get much better than this.

Stayed here a number of years ago and was interested to see if it had changed. It has, but not for the better. It is still a wonderful setting, but the rooms are decidedly average and the drinks are VERY expensive. We ate in the Georgian Room; stiflingly dull atmosphere, stiflingly formal service, stiflingly expensive, pretentious food. An establishment apparently clinging to bygone glories. The hotel seems to be moving from a high class five star hotel to an accessible timeshare leisure centre, with plans to expand the latter. I have no problem with that but the prices charged should match the product. £300 a night for DBB for 2. Go elsewhere.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights when they were battling with severe flooding from the Loch - this didn't alter our view of the hotel. Our delexe room needed refurbished - the shower rail had mold on it and there was paint chipped from furniture and surfaces in the room. The complimentary sherry every night was a nice touch. The poorly photocopied "bedtime story", left when the beds were turned down, seemed odd and cheap compared to the lovely chocolate you expect from a high quality hotel. The food in Smollet's Restaurant was great although drinks in Whisky Bar were very overpriced - £10 for a port or sparkling wine. There is a newer part to the hotel - a poorly finished and extension that looks cheap and includes and barn-like lounge bar that would be at home in a 2 star hotel. The pool and gym were well eqipped but all of the leisure facilities need refurbished. Excellent massage. Overall we were very disappointed - this isn't a rural country house hotel - there is a busy main road just behind the hotel as well. Maybe better for families, not great for a couple.

It was my partners birthday, his divorce had come through, and I wanted to give him a lovely night away in a romantic retreat, so booked the Cameron House Hotel.

I called prior to our visit requesting a loch view as it was for a special occasion and the hotel said they would do all they could for us - on arrival we ended up getting a free upgrade to a 5* lodge - with a jacuzzi and sauna, it was simply perfect.

Spa is great, view spectacular, we even had a family of ducks to keep us company in the pond next to our balcony. I certainly couldn't falut the staff. I would recommend going to the Drovers Inn for dinner though as it is great wholesome grub at a much cheaper cost that the hotel.

A definite five star experience and would recommend anyone to go.

A friend and I stayed here for a week on an exchange through a time share scheme, and were floored by how wonderful it was!

We had a lodge (cabin) that could have slept 8, and was well stocked for amenities, as well as the option to have groceries stocked on our arrival and dairy items delivered daily - which we took advantage of. Upon arrival in the evening we explored the lodge & main hotel to find amenities that are second to none, including a golf course, pool, fitness facility and marina.

The setting is equally spectacular. We woke up the next morning to find that we were looking at Balloch castle across the loch. It's minutes to drive into Balloch and Alexandria as well as fairly easy to get to almost anywhere in the western part of Scotland, especially now that the toll on the Erskine bridge is gone (we had hired a car).

All 'round a great experience.

What a pleasurable experience. The staff are wonderful and cannot do enough for you. The Georgian Room restaurant in our opinion is better than Le Blanc's Le Manoir aux Quatre Saisons. Smollett's Restaurant looks really good after a refurb and the food is consistently good with excellent service. The Marina Bar and Restaurant is more relaxed but does not stint on quality of service or food. Just superb. The setting on Loch Lomond is just beautiful. The rooms are gorgeous. Only minute criticism is that the pool is in a very public area but still very enjoyable.
