“Lovely villa in beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed 27 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

Casa Olivastra is a well-maintained villa in beautiful surroundings. It is a good base from which to explore the hill-top villages in the region such as Montalcino (30 mins), Pienza (45 mins), Montepulciano (1 hr) and Cortona (1hr 45 mins). When visiting these towns I recommend you make an early start as car parking can be problematic. The local town of Seggiano is about 7 mins drive away and has an excellent bar/trattoria, Caffe 60 - the food here was some of the best we had in Tuscany. Castel del Piano is around 15 mins drive away and has a larger selection of bars and restaurants - one of the best of which was La Fey - their beef special was wonderful!

The pool area at the villa is lovely, with amazing views over the surrounding countryside and beautiful sunsets. It was nice to have an undercover seating area next to the pool and a barbeque, which we made use of. The kitchen was well-equipped but more glasses should be provided. You will need to buy some citronella candles and plug-ins for the bedrooms as mosquitoes were a nuisance in the evenings.

There were a couple of issues that didn't in any way affect our enjoyment of the holiday but would have made our stay a bit more comfortable and may be something the owners would like to consider. The access to the property is down a steep lane of loose stone. We had two small cars that we took down to the entrance to the villa when we first arrived - this was a mistake as we had terrible trouble getting them back up the slope. If you haven't got a large car or a four-wheel drive then you will need to park at the top of the lane and walk down to the property - in the evening you will need to take a torch with you! Whilst this did not present a problem to most of of our party, it will be problematic if you have elderly or disabled relatives/friends travelling with you and was an issue for my mum. Some prior knowledge of this would have been helpful.

Whilst there were five decent sun loungers provided (albeit they didn't have padded cushions on them, which we would have expected), the sixth sun lounger wasn't usable as it was very unstable - another one should be provided if the villa is being let to six adults.

I would have expected a villa of this calibre to have air condititioning; whilst there were fans provided these did little to alleviate the heat in the bedrooms.

A huge thank you to Phil Twiss (a previous occupant of the villa) who helped us with car hire and provided us with invaluable information on the local area.

I would not hesitate to recommend the villa - we had the most wonderful time and would definitely return in the future.

“Cosy nice base for us five adults driving in Tuscany and spend holiday”
Reviewed 25 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

Just for us 5 adults and a small kid. All basic was provided and the property was tidy and the scenery over Tuscany was so nice. The people who rented
the property answered my questions and helped to complete the booking and also the local stuff were very friendly when we needed advice of the property.
We were provided a baby bed though it was not available according to
the info.

“Easy living in very comfortable tranquil and beautiful surroundings”

We have stayed at Casa Olivastra twice and will be returning this summer. The location is 5 mins drive away from the village of Seggiano in a perfect, peaceful and picturesque location and to be frank it is hard to want to stray too much further than the village which has a well equipped supermarket, friendly local bar/pizzeria, restaurants. A larger town called Castel Del Piano within 15 minutes has a wider range of goods and services, including a wonderful bakery just behind the church and various bars, shops and restaurants (aperitivo time is from 5.00pm and free nibbles with your “sun downer” at most places). Also close to the church is an old chap who runs a tiny shop selling vegetables from his garden and wine at €3 a litre (take your own bottle!), local olive oil and much more.

A really good fruit and veg shop in Castel which also sell fresh fish and the abiding memory is the taste and smell of tomatoes.

Further afield but still close by Montepulciano, Montalcino and Pienza are stunning if you ever get there as you are constantly being distracted by offers of Olive Oil and wine tastings. Siena is a “must visit” City (1.5 hours away) but go early in the day to avoid the trippers.

The villa is very individual, well designed and furnished, very well equipped (possibly a few more glasses needed), secluded and private and is a true home from home. I love “spuddling” in the downstairs kitchen with a glass of something in my hand making bread and salads gazing out towards the coast planning nothing for the next day while my girls enjoy the small pool, loungers and holiday books.

Fully wound up on arrival to fully wound down and complete “chill time” where going to the fridge for a beer is a real chore takes about 1 day. I could go on, but you get the idea; don’t hesitate, book it, you will love it!!
