We stayed 2 nights in Villa isiZulu at Thanda Private Game Reserve. Lucas the villa manager was amazing and very attentive to everyone staying at the villa he was very friendly and always had a smile on his face. His team was always on hand, at meal times (and even turning the beds down at night).

The rooms were clean, but beginning to feel a little tired and a good facelift is in order in bedrooms and bathrooms. Recessed pebbles in the floor make walking around in the room and the shower very uncomfortable.

The food was good, but not in the league of presentation and quality with the likes of Phinda Game Reserve down the load for example. The breakfasts and teas were the same each day and would like to have had a variety between the days.

As we were travelling with a baby, Thanda did provide a camp cot for our baby, which was erected by the staff (with linen and mattress). They also provided a nanny (at a fee), while we were on game drives and at the wedding reception. Unfortunately the nanny we were allocated spoke very little English, and couldn't quite understand what we were saying which didn't fill us with much confidence. She tried her best, but didn't seem to be as natural as we would have expected. I do feel it important that if you providing a service like this that they are capable of providing a service which can put a parents mind at ease.

With Thanda being a small reserve, you are almost certain of seeing the Big 5 including cheetah during your stay and game viewing is very very good. My only issue was the game viewer vehicles were not washed down and cleaned (after the previous drive) before collecting us from the lodge which is a small thing that top notch lodges do that makes all the difference.

All in all Thanda is a good option in Zululand.

We booked a series of accomodation & activities through GoAfrica - South Africa (cant speak highly enough of them) with the first hotel/experience being at the Thanda Private Game reserve.

My group covered 3 generations of our family (16 - 74) and we were all very well catered for during our 3 night stay. This is a very well appointed environment and the service was excellent. Everyone came away from Thanda totally enthused by the experience.

With two safaris a day and 3 meals a day all included within the price this was a fantastic resort.

We saw all of the big 5 but also other animals that we had hoped to see such as wildebeast, warthogs, monkeys, jackal and many different species of bird.

We were totally blown away and several weeks on are still talking about the experience

A very tranquil location, with great views and a very private safari experience NOT an army of trucks descending on every animal located.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are very well appointed.

We stayed 4 nights and the whole experience was absolutely superb. Luxurious accommodation, pampered service, delicious food. The wonderful scenery and rugged terrain really added to the experience. Driving out in the morning and afternoon was seamless, with really knowledgeable guides and fantastic trackers, we saw all the animals you'd ever want to see, really close and without any sense of crowding or rush. Highly recommended - it was a real privilege to stay here.

Room Tip: All rooms are superb

From start to finish Thanda was top to bottom luxury. As a group of 11 all on our first safari experience, the staff attended to our every need. At collection at the gate in giving welcome drinks, they bought non-alcoholic beverages at my request for some of our guests, this is just one of many examples of staff commitment over our 48hr stay. They instructed us on how to contact them from our tented accommodation and of our game drive and meal times. The staff were budding in all that they did, from ensuring we learned every facet of the reserve's plants and animals to clarifying every meal option. All around outstanding service. The food options served were excellent and made for a fine dining 3 course experience. The accommodation was simply unique, a tent with the amenities of a five star hotel is a hard find, but the composure of rooms was most comfortable, and living without electricity was all part of the bedazzling experience! Lastly I can't articulate how special the drives were, especially the afternoon drive. We were lucky to see the Big 5 in 2.5 hrs, but aside from our breathtaking sightings, seeing the Winter sunset with a glass of red and biltong, followed by a night drive under the stars back to dinner was an inexplicable treasure. For any first time safari experience Thanda is worth every penny.
