Hotel-Gasthof Sonne
Ranked #2 of 3 Schiltach B&B and Inns

Just to be clear, we didn't actually stay at Gasthof Sonne. We ate at the restaurant only. We found that the service was friendly and genuine. We ordered what was billed as traditional meals from Swabia/Baden. It was good. The portions were hefty and they had no problem splitting a meal for our children. The atmosphere was traditional German, although there was a smoking section that was not very well-separated. That being said, the food was good and a reasonable value.

Walking in the hotel which is located in the cobblestone city center was our first impression. The stairs up to the "lobby" are old and covered with stained carpet. Once inside the restaurant we checked in at the bar (small hotel no front desk which is ok) the check in would have been on but for the pack of old men sitting at the table immediately next to the bar who made no attempt to coceal the fact they were staring at us like we were aliens. Maybe glaring is a better word. The portly German woman who checked us in (Kadiya) simply shoved a form at us to fill out but didn't bother to explain that the form was actually registration and our free train ticket for the Black Forest. Although this is a touristic area
And it appeared she could speak a little English she seemed reluctant to try. Very unfriendly. we got to our room which was one of the theme rooms. It was clean enough and ok. Very IKEA type stuff trying to look authentic German. The bed was very comfortable however and the breakfasts were good although again, no friendly or warm. The town is SUPER cute, better than I imagined. We had a good meal in the restaurant, prices were good and the food was hearty, During our two days in Schiltach we stubbled upon a fantastic little beer garden down the street called the Zur Brucke that is right on the little river in town. it wasn't recommended by the Sonne but it is by far the best place to hang out and see the view and have a good meal and some beer. Going back to this hotel... I don't want to slam it,
It was OK, just no hospitality.a Other reviewers found a better place in Schiltach (the place I mentioned above) and I should have taken the advice. Being in the marketplace is no big deal, it is a teeny town and all we saw in the "marketplace" was one jewelry store and the city hall. There is no "market" per se. To see the adorable town and experience its warmth walk down the street for a beer, see the river, climb the hills or look in one of the many great little museums.

Fabulous bargain-priced ancient inn, set in a most beautiful square, with a kitchen to die for of proven worth because the locals dine here. You sit at big, scrubbed tables and nothing is too much trouble. But save yourself for the ice cream puddings. They are amazing.

The hotel for a solo traveler was good. Relatively quiet. The price charged was higher than both the City of Schiltach Catalog and the Hotel's own website...? The room was small but clean, the bathroom very nice. The reception was not warm or friendly, just servicable. No sign of the inhaber or owner. Just employees doing their work which is unusual in a hotel this small. The floors are a bit squeaky and a trip up two flights of stairs is necessary to reach the room. No view of the river or city center, just the back of the pharmacy and an electronic store. Ok but not fantastic.

we drove down today from Heidelberg after checking out this site for accommodation in schiltach, this hotel was so easy to find, right on the central square and it is great. clean rooms good outlook and the owner is the chef in the restaurant which is classic German!
Cost is quite reasonable and we would definately come back and recommend it.
