“Nice little city”
Reviewed 22 December 2013

This hotel is convenient, nothing more, nothing less. The rooms are quite outdated and the some furnitures should be replaced. However, this staff is friendly and even if they do not speak English, they will try to do their best to help you. The restaurant's food is better and they even have meals with their own animals. The parking is too small (4 cars max) but there is another public parking not far away from there.

Thank you for your review! You might have seen that there have been a lot of renewings in the hotel e.g. the conservatory and the beergarden. We are afraid that it is not possible to do and afford it all at once :(. But we have started working on the rooms again in September and renewed also furniture and bathroom. More rooms will follow during the winter time. Come back in summer next year and you'll see the progress! :o) Merry christmas! Your family Kochhäuser

This is a great little inn located in a nice wee town that lacks the tack of other Rhine villages. Our room was spotless with the added bonus of tea making facilities - a rare enough thing on the continent. The hosts were helpful and genial but it was the food that stole the show. In a word - excellent! It has a varied gamey menu. We both kicked off with nice tomato soup. Then I had wild boar and my partner had some form of venison. Neither of us would have experience of eating game but both dinners were fantastic. Excellent breakfast too. Dinner service could have been a bit slicker but the price when you consider the quality was incredibly cheap.

We drove up the Rhein castle watching and wanted a place to stay. Koblenz is the obvious place if you are headed back down the Mosul, but we wanted something different. The Roter Ochse was in the perfect location and nearby two castles. Rhens isn't much (although it looks like they are trying to invigorate it); but it's a nice town and the people are friendly. The hotel was clean, the room was simple and pleasant, and we had a wonderful stay. The absolute highlight is the restaurant on the first floor. The owners don't mess around; they have a first class restaurant and the food is amazing. We sampled plenty, but the weiner snitzel is among the best I've ever had--if not the best. But, you may not be able to finish it. The plate is oversized and the snitzel spilled over the sides with plenty of fries. I would stay here again in an instant. We were so stuffed after dinner that we had to walk around. The place was almost silent; we had the streets to ourselves. We went and saw the old fortifications around the town, walked down by the Rhein river, and simply relaxed. It's a simple town, no crime visible, and we parked our car just down the block in a lot owned by the hotel. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because it wasn't luxurious (which would merit such a score), but it truly was excellent. Oh, we stayed here in early 2011, but the TripAdvisor calendar doesn't go back that far.

Room Tip: Given the cleanliness and the attention to detail, I can't imagine any room is bad. But, if you...

I came to this hotel with my school last week for 5days. It was an amazing holiday the hotel was outstanding lovely food, and the rooms were just as great plus the beds which are the comfiest things I have ever touched like angel feathers if one knew what they felt like! The surrounding areas of the hotel to are outstanding not to far from major cities such as cologne and koblensk but not to close do you can still enjoy the quaint German village setting to add on to that within yards from the hotel is a amazingly cheap and tasty pizza place, a delicious ice cream parlour and a nearby lidl. My school St Boniface takes students from ages 11-14 to this part of Germany every year for ciriculam enrichment week this year was my last year of being able to do it as a student and if I had new how fantastic it was I most certainly would of went without a shadow of a doubt on all previous years!
I highly reccomend visiting this part of Germany and if so defiantly using this
hotel. I would like to say thanks to all the teachers who coordinated the trip on enabling me to experience such an amazing 5days!

Our school's annual trip to Germany is fortunate to stay at the Hotel Roter Ochse in Rhens. The hotel is perfect for our staff and students, it is clean, safe and has excellent provisions - including TVs and en-suite bathrooms. The town of Rhens is great for our students too, and the hotel is a short walk to the river - a lovely stroll on a warm summer's evening.

Breakfast and evening meals at the hotel are exemplary, with quality German cuisine available for all. The food is wonderful, as is the service.

The Kochhäuser family have looked after our school group for many years, and make us feel like part of their family for 5 days every summer.

We hope to continue staying at the hotel in years to come. Would recommend to all!

We booked one night at the Roter Ochse, as part of a European road trip, following a personal recommendation from friends. We were advised to expect a friendly family run hotel, with good food. That is exactly what we got! We slept in a large room that was in the main building, and slept so well we would have stayed for longer, if a pre-booked ferry had not beckoned. The restaurant has house specials based on local wild game (boar, deer) as well as the usual fare. The evening meal was excellent.
