“Stunning gardens, less than friendly staff”
Reviewed 22 June 2012

What a stunning hotel, the gardens were marvellous with lovely statues in the water features. The chap behind the bar really seemed to look down his nose at us, maybe it was my husbands jeans that put him off, he chucked his change at him across the bar! The food was lovely, hubby had roast beef sandwiches and I had pâté and toast. The ladies on the table next to us on the terrace had to ask several times about where there order was(it wasn't busy when they ordered but was by the time we left) and it still hadn't arrived when we went for a walk in the grounds, over half an hour later.
The food prices are reasonable and the food was good quality. We would visit again and would be aware of how we might dress for the barman!

Thank you for your review following your recent visit to The Petwood. I am bitterly disappointed to read your comments about the service you received as it does not marry at all with the usual warm welcome given by our team. Please accept my apologies and assurances that this matter will be addressed. I would also like to clarify that, whilst there is a 'smart casual' dress code for the Dining Room (which specifies "preferably no denim"), there is no formal dress code for the bar; jeans are welcome as are trainers, t-shirts and shorts.
I am encouraged to know that you would consider visiting again and I sincerely hope you will return to see that your initial experience is not the typical Petwood experience.
Thank you again for your comments.
Best wishes

We booked the Petwood for a weekend away as part of my other half's birthday surprise which was a ride in the Lancaster Bomber just down the rode at Lincs Aviation (fantastic experience). On driving through the entrance were were blown away by the grounds, the beautiful rhododendrons in all colours some of which must have been nearly 30ft high and the hotel itself.

First impressions:- grand building, keeping original features, lovely staircase up to the bedrooms and wood panelling throughout.

Room: we originally booked a family room but advised the hotel we were coming as a couple only and were given a double exec room (212) with great views over the gardens on £150 package for room, 3 course diner and breakfast so good value. .Bathrobes and slippers provided. It was a lovely great big room but as some have already said, some things that let it down. Curtains were ripped and frayed. Sofa in seating area had a whole in it, mattress seemed very old showing the signs of wear and dips in places where people had lied for years, especially on one side which had been used more than the other creating a bit of an uneven level, very soft, with a feather duvet which at first seemed luxurious but we soon got fed up on the pointy ends digging into us. Old fashioned bathroom but very clean. Nowhere to put toiletry bags so we left them on the floor, hand towel was on a ring next to the toilet on the opposite side to the sink so not very practical.

Dinner: Nice touches such as bottled water kept in a cooler, I can't say food was outstanding, just OK. Slices of black pudding in starter seemed to have been microwaved as they were piping hot all through and not crispy on the outside or pinkish in the middle as if they had been pan fried but was tasty. I had haddock starter and monkfish main but portions were not huge. Lemon tart came out so cold we thought it had only recently come out of the freezer. So overall a couple of things that let it down slightly. Nice to have the option to take coffee served in the lounge.

Bar: was disappointed that when I asked the guy behind the bar to remove some ice as there was loads and it was sticking out of the top, he just pushed it down and said there you go it's OK now. Made me feel I was only getting half a drink for the grand price of £5.50. Was gone in a couple of sips.

Overall: lots of oldy world charm and character but a bit tired and worn in places. Great to see the Dambusters bar and that the hotel has lots of pictures/nostalgic items all over. Fully recognise that it must take a lot of money to keep such a property tip top but a bit of updating in places would really push it into the superb bracket.

Room Tip: Rooms above reception, bar and function suite offer great views over the grounds

Thank you for your review detailing your first impressions of the hotel and its grounds, your upgraded room overlooking the gardens and the characteristics of the Petwood which you found appealing.

I was sorry to read, however, that some elements of your stay disappointed you. I was particularly surprised that you thought the bed was 'years old' given that it has only recently been replaced.

The black pudding mille-feuille starter you ordered is baked in individual slices and stacked for presentation. All of our desserts are freshly prepared on the premises and the lemon tart is served chilled. Whilst microwaves and frozen desserts may be found, unfortunately, in some kitchens, I am proud to say that this is not the case at The Petwood.

Thank you again for your comments. I hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you again to show you improved and updated areas of the hotel, as you suggest, and see if we can edge the Petwood experience to the superb bracket to which we aim.

Four of us visited on our little tour of Lincolnshire to visit the 617 Suadron Bar and to enjoy a late 'Afternoon Tea'.

There's no need to book afternoon teas so we just turned up. But nothing was too much trouble for the friendly and attentive staff. The afternoon tea was smashing and very good value for money.

And what we really went to see was priceless.............. and thank you Petwood Hotel for keeping the Squadron Bar and its valuable contents in such good condition

Thank you for calling in to The Petwood to take tea in the Squadron Bar whilst in the area visiting aviation heritage sites and the wonderful Kinema. Your kind comments about the food, staff and the Squadron Bar memorabilia are enormously pleasing and I thank you very much indeed for your review. I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you again to Woodhall Spa.

With thanks and best wishes

We stayed at the Hotel because of the Dambusters connection and loved the place from the moment we drove in to the car park. The staff were helpful and friendly if perhaps a little thin on the ground at times, the rooms were clean and the food was very good.It is a little tired in a few places but the history and ambiance more than make up for it.I'm giving a top rating because we had a wonderful few days away and I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: A room facing the gardens would obviously be first choice but may be noisy if there is say a wedding...

We stayed at the Petwood last year with a coach tour company doing the Dambusters tour. We fell in love with the hotel before we had even got through the door!!!!! the tour was a hectic schudule and we didnt get the benefit of the hotel. So we decided to do it all over again but at our own speed. We had the most amazing room, the history of the hotel is breathe taking in its self, staff are so friendly and the food was lovely. I vannot think of one single thing that was wrong. There is so much to do in the area you will never be bored. We are going back again just before christmas and i cannot wait. :)

Room Tip: Ask for the excective room in the middle that over looks the gardens at the rear. Baby foxes, rabbit...

Visited this hotel with our youngsters, for a Sunday day out and I was shocked to see how tired the hotel appears to be. It is a big hotel and has two main function rooms but I feel there is not enough staff to cope with all the restaurants and function rooms as we were always having to look for staff to attend to our needs.
I think as the hotel is very well known for its Dambuster connection, it must have visitors from all over the world and therefore it needs an urgent revamp and general upkeep. Which brings me to the gardens, they also need some maintenance. All in all it needs some TLC urgently especially as i understand that there is to be a large reunion of the dambusters next year.
