I am very glad I asked a couple we met while walking along Car Dyke in Martin if they knew of any decent pubs in the area: they suggested the Railway Hotel, and it definitely IS a decent pub. Note that does not mean Gastropub, more upmarket restaurant than place to drop in for a pint and bar food. The Railway is a proper pub.
We were a bit taken aback to find we were the only people in the bar at 1230 on a Saturday, but the gentleman behind the bar cheerfully explained that they were hosting a local wedding and reception a little later, and that most people were saving themselves for the party (we noticed the hall full of decorated tables as we left).
We didn't look at bottled beers, but a glance showed the usual variety. There's a reasonable assortment of draft beers on tap, including two or three from local small breweries. The bar person was knowledgeable and happy to discuss the beers, even offering us a taste of those we thought most interesting while we chatted about the area and the pub. Genuinely welcoming, a rarity these days.
The menu is traditional pub food, although from the Specials board Friday evening is more interesting with an array of fish and seafood. Although the kitchen was busy preparing for the reception, the chef found time to make our sandwiches and chips for which we were very grateful (it had been a long day). The crusty baguettes were crusty indeed and spread with real butter, with a generous filling of ham (me) and beef (him). All in all it was exactly what we'd hoped for: a good, honest pub.
