“A luxuary level in Reunion Island but still some details to improve”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

The Palm hotel is one of the best place to stay in Reunion Island regarding the luxuary level of hotels on the island. It is big enough to feel at ease yet humanized not to feel lost among the mass. We had a normal room that was cute but not too spacious regarding other customers demand (german/american especially) The service is very high standard and classy but there is still little details that make you realize Reunion Island is still far beyond its Maurician neighbours : we had a great welcoming by the concierge and desk but some ways of the waiters and barman were too"familiar" in a unappropriate way. You can feel the difference of treatment if you are a local or a foreigner (same issue in Maurician hotels though) who privileges anglosaxon people. the breakfast was served in a buffet style and we had to wait 5 to 10 minutes for our omelettes with 6 person queue at least.
We stayed for our wedding anniversary and as we let the crew know about it we expected to have a special gift: we finally received a gift bag with a commercial book of Cartier and a candle: i regret that they did not make any effort like a drink or a spa voucher. those little details that you never encounter in 5 stars hotel in Pacific or other "island" destination makes it a little mnus for the Hotel. Yet in general the situation is amazing, the view is breathtaking, the edge of the world with the ocean 200meters beneat heard from the room and the facilities amazing.

This is the one which got away from me during a recent visit to Reunion.
I only enjoyed a superb lunch, prior to which I had the opportunity to walk around the hotel's well manicured gardens, admire the swimming pool with its little nooks and crannies and its infinity view and enjoy the splendid vista from high up over the ocean, something a resort right on the beach simply cannot beat.
A quick 'side trip' to the rooms, a room steward allowing me a brief peep into one she was just making up, made me wonder if I would not perhaps better add a day or two just to stay for the experience.
When I expressed my 'disappointment' for having to move on without being able to sample not just lunch but also breakfast and dinner, and a night or two. Patrice and Candice, Directeur and Directrice Commerciale respectively, whom I met on departure, were swift to invite me to come back and stay on a future visit, something I plan to take them up on.
The impression certainly was very grand and the staff cheerfully friendly, though perhaps, like in most places on Reunion, struggling a bit, or more, with their spoken English.

Room Tip: I gather the villas must be absolutely enchanting ... yes, that is what I would settle for ... compl...

The Palm hotel and Spa in the South of Reunion Island (not far from the interesting town of Saint-Pierre) has a splendid location on a cliff (next to Grande Anse, a former small vulcano and a small, quiet but beautiful sandy beach) overlooking the Indian Ocean with the appearance of humpback whales from time to time. The hotel is easy accessible by road and offers a good parking lot. The site is situated in a beautiful greenery. The facilities are splendid, fantastic swimming pool, spa, shop, restaurants and bar. The welcome was very warmly with welcome drink and explanation and tour of hotel and facilities. It seems quite common that hotel staff on Reunion Island is very helpfull and friendly ! Our hotel rooms were spatious, very clean and with all comfort. The restaurant offers very good breakfast. One remark concerning the restaurant, when it is windy and chilly, it gets rather cold in the restaurant which is open to all weather elements !
Nevertheless this hotel must be one of the best amongst two others we staid in July (the Lux* and the Diana Dea Lodge) !

Hailed as the gem on the crown in the Réunion, this hotel seems to live on its reputation which it does not deserve. To be sure, the location is fantastic, on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, with humpback whales enchanting your eyes with a ballet that leaves you spell-bound, that is if you like whales, of course (but you can see them everywhere around the island).

The place is altogether rather pretentious but is plagued with shortcomings that are unacceptable for a hotel of that price and reputation. Whatever the management thought when it decided to place the shower in front of a frosted glass window, with no curtain to ensure your intimacy, knowing that passers-by have full view on the said window (and on yourself in the nude)? Besides, why did they choose to install i-pod/pad/phone receivers against the wall contiguous with the next room when the insulation of the wall is inexistant? One could here the music played by the neighbours through the wall up to a point where we had to put the (quite small) telly on to feel a bit at home.

We decided to have a meal on the first night of our stay in the "deck" restaurant. Quite posh. Until it started to rain ... through the roof of the restaurant and obliged most guests to move to another section of the restaurant. The prices were so high (221€ for 4 starters and main courses, and a bottle of wine), and the dishes were in the main so disapointing (a boring saladde de palmiste, and a very common and dry fish stew) that we decided not to have desserts (an exceptional decision as far as I am concerned).

So, in a nutshell, never again! We found a much better service, location and value for money in the Saint Alexis in Boucan Canot where we stayed 4 nights just afterwards.

Icons are not always to be revered!

We stayed as part of our honeymoon package in june 2013. It was our second hotel on the island and had a lot to live up to as the first one had been exceptional. I have given this hotel a 5 star rating as even though there were a few little imperfections the overall standard deserves a 5 star and everyone should be comfortable in booking this beautiful hotel. The room was luxurious with a view over the grounds, pool and the sea. Everything was spotlessly clean, the bed was very comfy, the bathroom was perfect and there was room in the minibar to use it as a personal fridge. The grounds were spotless and well cared for, you feel safe and secure within the grounds and surrounding area. The pool is split into 2 areas and is very pretty and feels more intimate and private than other hotels. The views over the sea are magnificient. The breakfast buffet is of a very high quality and choice. Bar prices are reasonable, on-site facilities are excellent and it is well placed to visit the south half of the island. Good value for money all round and highly recommended. The only slight problem was that we did feel a bit undervalued as a half board package when it came to the evening meal. The food was excellent don't get me wrong but we didn't get a great deal of choice at all ( even no choice on 2 out of 3 evenings for the main course ) The hotel was lacking a bit of management intuition i feel. They seemd to be so scared that you'd order something very expensive off of an open menu that they restricted you to having exactly what they wanted you to have. If they just put a supplement on the caviar, lobster etc and left you free choice on the rest they would have very happy customers. We had an awkward moment in the " refined " restaurant as things hadn't been explained properly until the second we were about to order and find out we would have a very heavy supplement. It felt to be honest a bit stage managed but we decided just to go throught to the other restaurant to avoid any problems. The staff dealt with the situation perfectly and were very good to us, they didn't charge us for drinks for 2 nights to make up for it which we didn't ask for but were grateful none the less. We found a note in our room from the duty manager to apologise for the misunderstanding and invite us back to the " refined " restaurant that evening with no supplement, wonderful. We get to the restaurant that evening and take our chairs and are told that we chef will prepare a 4 course meal for us. It was wonderful, but again we had no choice at all on the menu and felt again that we were being taken exactly where they wanted to take us again!! The portions are very generous and the food is excellent, but sometimes you just want a choice of something light , simple and cheap as well. A couple of highly trained and present staff and this hotel would be perfection, it has everything else.

This is by far the best hotel in Reunion Island. The staff are very friendy and helpful, the rooms are carefully appointed, not missing a single detail, luxurious, comfortable, relaxing and simply beautiful. The food was superb! Truly enjoyed the time in this amazing hotel.

Spent three nights at the Palm. The junior suite was spacious with an outdoor shower. The entire hotel needs an upgrade. It seems stuck in the era of beach hotels of the 80's. It calls itself a **** (4 star) hotel. It is far from it. Some staff call it a ***** (5 star). This is no five star or even four star location. It is not on the beach, the food is not up to the quality expected of an upper star location and the entire ambiance of the hotel needs to be upgraded. Our room was decorated in dark colors with sitting chairs that were uncomfortable, a desk stool that was so low, it was difficult to work at the desk because it was so much lower than the desk platform, and the semi-reclining patio chairs were set directly on the ground, making them very difficult to get into and out of easily.

The bar is very nice serving before dinner cocktails. However, like the restaurant, the bartenders and wait staff is seems to be too few to handle the guests waiting for a drink. There is no reason to have to wait 20 minutes for a cocktail to be made and served. Where is the manager to help carry the load?

The staff is friendly but seems to lack management overview. The breakfast is very good with many different options. This is self-serve with a wait staff to bring coffee and table set-ups. The Deck Restaurant is a different story. The welcomes are always there as soon as you enter the restaurant, but after the welcome, it goes downhill. There are a lot of staff scurrying about, some looking disgruntled and others just doing busy work. Where is the manager to keep things moving. Where is the manager to make sure every table is being serviced in a quick, efficient manner? Where is the manager to promote team work? It wasn't visible to us. The service at dinner was extremely slow. The chef couldn't quite get his act together getting the food out in a timely manner, and the was food mediocre. We did not eat in the prime restaurant as we didn't expect the food or service to be any better than that given in the regular restaurant.

The spa, however, was great! The staff was friendly, the massage terrific and the ambiance of the rooms comfortable.

This hotel is not a 4 or 5 star. It cannot compete on the same level as a hotel in Tahiti or Hawaii which are always in the middle of the ocean.
