Le Clos Normand
Reviewed 21 April 2011

Le Clos Normand is located right on the boardwalk. In fact, its terrasse is on the beach side of the boardwalk. Our rooms were Channel-side and offered a delightful breath of salt air and great view. The rooms are tiny as are the bathrooms, and there is sign of age, but everything was very clean and the beds were quite comfortable. We ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel. The dining room is outstanding! All hotel and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful.

I loved this hotel! I had the chance to stay three nights at this hotel while touring Normandy and loved my stay. The hotel and rooms were spotless, my bathroom had recently been renovated to a high standard. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent.

We have just returned from a week in Normandy where we stayed at this charming hotel. The hotel is on the beach promenade in the pleasant little village of St Aubin sur Mer. When we made our telephone booking the girl advised us that the room available was small in size but we found it was comfortable, spotlessly clean, lovely pure white sheets and towels with a tiny bathroom and a beautiful view over the sea. It was lovely to go to sleep and wake up to the sound of the waves.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis but the hotel does have a very good restaurant and we did eat there on our first evening. My only criticism of the hotel was their wine list was on the extravagent side so we spent the rest of the week eating in different restaurants, some in St Aubin sur Mer and others in the neighbouring villages.
We really enjoyed our stay. We loved the fact that you could walk for miles along the promenade in either direction and explore the other little villages and it was also a good base for visiting further a field by car.
We came home relaxed and our batteries recharged.

We stayed for one night on our way back from the Vendee. St Aubin is only about 20 minutes from Ouistreham (also known as Caen for some strage reason as its a good 10 miles to Caen) from where Brittany Ferries operate a service to Portsmouth.

St Aubin is a lovely seaside village. The Clos Normand is right on the sea front and all the rooms have a sea view. We were given an excellent room designed for families. It has a main entrance leading to a hallway with the toilet and bathroom (which is a very good size) accessed from the hallway. It then has two separate bedrooms one of which is again of a very good size and the other has room for three single beds but doesn't leave much space.

We booked half board. The dinner menu offered good options for 'free' and also allowed you to upgrade to a-la-carte options for reasonable supplements. It's a typical up-market French restaurant and therefore the food is very well presented and cooked to perfection. The kids had plenty of options for their food.

Whilst it's not cheap to stay here I highly recommend it. The price is the only reason I've rated it as Above Average rather than Excellent.

We went for a romantic getaway - returning to Clos Normand after about 5 years.

The hotel is just as quaint and beautiful - the location is perfect. After 12 hours of travelling and sight seeing in Caen - the glasses of wine on the terrace over the beach, in the sunshine were very welcome. The staff were very welcoming and our lack of french language didn't phase them, thankfully.

We ate in the resaurant the first night of our stay, it is always busy with locals as it is an excellent sea food restaurant. We weren't over keen on the menu - but that was down to our personal tastes, not the fault of the hotel. What we did have was superb and couldn't have been better. After dinner we went for a walk along the promenade.

We went out and about the second day, it's a perfect location to explore Normandy and the reminders of its history are at every small town and traffic islands. I also adore the little casino's in each of the coastal towns.

The only small quibble I would have is that when we got back there were no parking spaces left, it must have been a busy night.

The room was small, but spotless, and overlooked the beach, right on the edges of Sword/Juno beach. A very compact bathroom, but fully functional and spotlessly clean. We slept with the windows open just because we could, and the sea was so close.

Breakfast both mornings was a delight, and the staff contstantly replenshing the supplies.

The hotel is beautiful, and quaint, and fairly quiet. The staff were excellent and helpful.

What surprised us on this visit was the lack of English visitors in the whole Normandy region, the hotel too are missing their custom.

I will be doing my best to get enough money together, and time off work to head back again next summer - it was a lovely short break to recharge the batteries and relax - perfect!

We booked this hotel on recommendation from a colleague. Seriously, the experience was incredible. For an incredible price we had private rooms with a view onto the beach, a four course dinner and a breakfast.

First of all, the hotel is right on the water. Across the boardwalk they also have a terrasse for meals and drinks, etc. literally on the beach. If that wasn't enough, the entire hotel is fresh and inviting. Decorated in maritime colours with large windows, it is very inviting. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. They get to know the guests very quickly. At dinner, the experience is clearly five star. Excellent servers bring courses and courses of incredibly prepared, unique local specialties. Yes, as another comment mentioned the drinks are expensive, but would be on par with any restaurant in Paris, even something of a must poorer quality. For the calibre of the restaurant, the drink prices were reasonable. The server quickly suggested the right wine based on our meal, and we were quite impressed. Possible the best meal I have eaten in a long time.

The rooms were nice, although a bit small - perhaps because we booked single rooms. If you are a large person, ask about the size of the shower when booking a room.

The breakfast was also quite good, including pastries, bread, cereals, yogourts, jams, coffee, tea, juice, milk, etc. - once again in their excellent dinner hall overlooking the sea.
