“A Cold house for a winter let.”
Reviewed 12 January 2018 for a stay in December 2017

It's a great area for walks and birds watching but…It was very cold weather when we stayed at Rock Cottage between Xmas and New Year. We found that the storage heaters did not provide adequate warmth throughout the cottage. We followed the instructions for settings in cold weather but experienced cold rooms throughout our stay particularly in the evenings. Then the bedrooms were hot during the night when so much heat wasn’t needed! There are no doors between kitchen and living area so the heat is difficult to maintain on the ground floor.
2. It must be obvious to the owner that the wood burning stove is an essential source of heat to keep the cottage warm in winter temperatures but the provision of wood for the stove was minimal and clearly guests are expected to purchase extra themselves. This seems a very penny pinching and mean arrangement. Of all the many properties that we have rented in the UK over time, the cost routinely covers all necessary heating.
3. Finally I would suggest that the untidy and unkempt front garden when we stayed does not give an impression of a well-maintained and attractive property.
4. In response to these points the owner has suggested that she should have been contacted with our concerns at the time. However the cottage has no landline or mobile phone reception and therefore emailing is the only option but that’s a problem if you don’t have a smartphone or equivalent means of sending one.

Management Response
14 Jan 2018
I'm surprised and very sorry that Steve found the Cottage not warm enough during sub-zero temperatures. In addition to the modern storage heaters and log-burning stove there is a supplementary electric radiator in the cottage lounge which does need to be switched on manually if needed - if Steve had contacted me during his stay I'd have happily pointed him to this and told him how he could access more logs. We do provide a basket of logs to all guests but this is really an aesthetic preference so, not unusually, the it's up to cottage guests if they'd like to buy more locally. Please have a quick look at our other reviews which mention how cosy and warm the cottage is in winter for a contrasting view. I'm someone who feels the cold and one of my favourite things about a winter stay at the cottage is how snug it is so I'm very surprised and disappointed that a guest didn't find this to be the case.

The cottage garden is basically an extension of the woodland which the cottage sits in and is a natural wildlife garden so will look a little untidy at this time of year, but the benefit is all of the beautiful birds attracted.

A cosy, quaint and well equipped little cottage, which is right on the doorstep of many stunning walks and scenery. Enjoyed a log fire in the evenings, a comfortable bed and a generous welcome package. Definitely worth a stay if you are in search of some peace and quiet.

“Cosy cottage”
Reviewed 23 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We had an excellent few days in this lovely cosy cottage. It has everything you need & had a much appreciated welcome pack including a bottle of wine. It's located in an idyllic setting with a few minutes walk to the local pub which serves good food.
It's a short drive to lake Windermere & to the Dales so a great location. Definitely recommend this cottage.

“Lovely cottage, great location”
Reviewed 21 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

We loved staying at rock cottage. It was small but was well equipped and had everything we needed. It was furnished beautifully. Lovely peaceful location, 5 minutes from a pub on the edge of the estuary. Would definitely recommend.

Hidden in the back lane of Storth, Rock Cottage is a picture perfect getaway! Really well equipped, lots of thoughtful touches, the cottage has everything you need! It's incredibly warm and cosy, the log fire is the finishing touch! There's just the two of us and our Dalmatian, we found the size of the cottage to be ideal for us, and would be great for a family with small children! It's perfectly located with plenty of walks on the doorstep. We took the dog to the local pub (The Ship Inn) - everyone was friendly and welcoming. All in all, we had a very relaxing, cosy weekend in the woods! Definitely intend to revisit Rock Cottage!

“A very warm and cosy cottage in a lovely area.”

Our family consisted of me, my husband and adult son. Unfortunately it was obvious that the maximum guests should be two adults and two young children. The second bedroom had bunkbeds and boxes of toys and children's books. My son who is over 6' found it rather difficult. The website said the cottage would sleep four, but if 4 adults stayed it would be rather awkward, as to get to the bathroom you had to go through the second bedroom!! We loved the cottage, but I think it should be made clear about the number of people staying. Also because of the steep and slippery steps, it would not be suitable for elderly people unsteady on their feet. I just think the website should be made clearer.
Our security deposit is due to be returned to us on the 4th October.
