“Perfect Holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2013

This was the perfect family holiday. Myself, my husband and twin Boys age 6 had a great time. There was loads to do from the pools, kids club, parks, beaches and horse riding. We went with Lifestyle Holidays and everything was great. Our caravan was spacious and clean and was in a great location (Mauve) and our rep was lovely and helpful. The Boys made friends with the other kids in the surrounding caravans and were able to play out front. (language is no barrier when you are young!) My husband and Boys had some surfing lessons and I went horse riding on very well kept horses and a lovely instructor. Lifestyle don't have a kids' club but our Boys enjoyed the Camp's club which had a lovely English girl working there and other French staff who spoke English. They were even included in the end of week show dressed as clowns. We hired bikes for the first week and all cycled to the lake Vieux Boucau which was about 10 minutes away but worth a visit. There are no waves at this beach so better for younger children. We had driven to the Camp Site so were able to visit an few places: San Sebastian was really lovely and worth a visit but were not overly impressed with Biarritz. For grocery shopping, don't make the mistake of going to the Super U at the end of the road on the Monday! It is very busy. Best to make the trip into Souston and go to LeClerc. We didn't eat out too much as we are vegetarians and we are not too catered for in France but we know that so it is not a problem for us. We had a pizza a couple of times from the site which was fine but we didn't eat at the restaurant. This is a very big camp site so please expect it to be very busy!

Room Tip: Mauve location was very good

Never ever again, not even if it was free!

Recently returned from a 10 night trip to France in our motorhome. 2 adults and 3 children under 10.

If you like extremely cramped pitches and chaotically organised site management then Airotel le Vieux Port could well be the place for you. For us, this was a classic take your money in return for minimal quality and very poor service.

Upon arrival there is nowhere to park whilst you book in, which for us required a tight manoeuvre into the site, u turn, and back out. We were then shown to our pitch by a (to be fair) helpful site rep on his bike (a good idea on such a huge site). However, to say our allocated ‘pitch’ was small would be a an understatement - Houdini could not have got our Motorhome parked on it (worth mentioning here that when we booked we specifically stated our motorhome was 28ft in length and they confirmed by e-mail that was no problem - in truth the site is very unsuitable for large Motorhomes. Even mid size Motorhomes would struggle in much of the site ).

Having explained to the site rep we could not physically park on the allocated pitch, he got on his radio and we were allocated another pitch. This second pitch was sloping significantly left to right at the top of a clutch burning slope, and whilst theoretically big enough for us, when we reversed our Motorhome on, we ‘bottomed out’ because the pitch was ‘dish’ shaped. If we weren’t so tired from a long journey, this is where we would have started laughing and looking for the candid cameras... Another chat on his radio and a third pitch was found which fortunately was long enough and flat enough for us to fit onto, albeit extremely narrow – we couldn’t use our awning though as there was not enough width on the pitch. Ok so I think its clear that if you own a reasonable size motorhome, Airotel le Vieux Port is not the site for you.

That aside, extremely busy with bikes, cars and people ‘milling’ everywhere – there must be close to 1,000 pitches on the site, so 3 or 4 thousand people. Chemical toilet disposal was within 5 or 6 metres of the designated BBQ area – ill considered and unhygenic. Pool area like Blackpool on steroids (I think they must allow non staying guests to use the pool on a day rate basis as it was heaving). On the positive side, the local beaches are really nice and the site shop was well stocked.

All in all, a huge, huge disappointment. Not conceivably a 5 star site as they advertise, maybe 2 star at most – we feel well and truly ripped off. We left Airotel le Vieux Port within 24 hours of our planned 7 day stay, and ended up staying at a really nice family site further up the coast where we will definitely return to next year.

For the record, we asked for a refund the evening we arrived and they fobbed us off saying we would never find anywhere else to stay (it was 5pm). We have since written to them and they refunded 20%. Apparently we could have received a 100% refund if we had not stayed the 1 night - so to us they were playing the game.

Our advice is don’t let a planned stay at Airotel le Vieux Port ruin your next holiday. France is a magnificent country and we had a really good experience staying at another site and in France generally. Wonderful beaches on the west coast for surfing etc. We will be back to France, just not here!

nice resort. Great beach. Rule of the pool: you must wear TIGHT swimming trunks. Not shorts etc. Myself and my son were kicked out on our first day for this misdemeanour. My son is Downs syndrome. "you, ingleesh, out!" he bellowed and waved at him. My boy cried. The arrogant lifeguard, wearing shorts of course, told us that next year women would not be allowed bikini tops!

The next day my wife approached the same lifeguard to inform him that there was a quantity of soiled tissues in the pool. He turned on his heal and shouted "bye bye dont speak English!" So much for concerns over hygiene.
Another park operative cut down our washing line whilst I was standing there resulting in our clothes landing in the dirt. The reason: I put the line in the wrong place by mistake.

We had a good holiday here but there is a pervading sense of Anglophobia amongst the staff.

If the owners want more detail on THAT lifeguard it is the oldest of the bunch who likes surfing and jogging.

This was our first visit to a camp site in France. We travelled on 26 August for 8 days. We have 3 children, aged, 7 and 5. We thought the campsite was great (but obviously have nothing to compare with). It is set in a lovely forest, we had a safari tent which was great fun and very comfortable. We found the place clean and well looked after. The toilet blocks and showers were regularly cleaned. The beach was a 10/15 minute walk away and it was beautiful. Although the coast is Atlantic and dangerous, life guards are there during the day. We had great weather every day so this helped. The children loved the pools and slides. We stayed for 8 days and did not even get a chance to use the kids club as there was so much to see and do around the campsite. The village of Vieux Boucau was great and we ate out a couple of nights there overlooking the lake. There was also a festival going on the weekend we were there so we saw a Bull fight show and there was a fair with rides.

Lake Leon is worth a visit where you can hire a boat or pedalo. We went pony trekking (5 mins outside campsite). Definitely recommned hiring bikes or taking your own.

The only disappointing thing was the evening entertainment. Not much for the kids and all entertainment was in French but we did go end of season. I think my daughter was hoping for more UK holiday campsite style disco! The restaurant on site we did not use as it seemed very expensive. The take away pizza's were great though and reasonably priced.

Would recommend visiting local big supermarket - Super U at end of the road or LeClerc as much cheaper than on site SPAR shop.

We had a great holiday and the children loved it so we are returning next year. I think if we had not had such great weather, however, if would have been a different story! It is a busy campsite but going last week of August seemed quieter.

Hi, stayed here in June of this year. Its probably a lovely place - in the right weather- but it had rained for a month solid before we arrived and it rained continuously while we were there. The site is very obviously geared for the great outdoors so we had a pretty miserable time - we couldn't navigate around the campsite on foot or bike eventually it got difficult to get round by car it was that badly flooded. Keycamp advised the camp owners do have pumps etc to deal with flooding however they were too busy with their own customers to deal with other areas. We saw alot of miserable faces and ended up leaving early.
Again a very biased review as we were so unlucky with the weather, that aside the pool is lovely and well kept, the beach is fab and the sorounding cycle paths look lovely. However the site itself is HUGE! even if it wasn't flooded we couldn't have allowed our kids to wonder around they would never have found us again. It is so big and sprawling and the mobile homes are packed very tightly together. The food was terrible, entertainment nil ( though I believe they did have something on the night we fled) and staff - well they were non existent. So all in a very disappointing holiday.
Just to add while keycamp staff were hard to find on camp we had great help from customer services in cork and in the camp site we moved to.

We have stayed on this camp site a number of times since our first visit in 1987. On all our visits over the years we have had at least one meal in the camp restaurant and found the quality good and prices fair. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for whoever is running it now. The moules and frites were the worst I have ever had in the 37 years I have been travelling to France. The moules were poor quality, small and practically taste less. The frites, fat and greasy. Cost Euros 13.80 - the highest price for this dish in France this year. What hope is there for a restaurant who cannot get right what is practically a national dish? My husband ordered the fried chicken which amounted to a chicken burger in a bun - cost Euros 14. Best value were the two crepes, but by this time we were disillusioned and will not bother again.

We've just come back from a week at this campsite, we booked a pitch privately and stayed in our Campervan. We were so excited on the day we arrived, the weather was fantastic and the campsite looked amazing. The kids (15, 8 and 6) quickly got settled into the pools and other kids activities on offer. The only disappointing factor across our weeks stay was some of the staff. On our first night we were spoken to very aggressively by one of the waiters at the bar (we ordered ourselves inside the bar instead of through him), he proceeded to shout at us in front of other guests saying he would get in trouble with his boss because we didn't order from him. We didn't go back to any of the bars because of this during the week. We paid almost €50 for that round of drinks with the group of us there, we should have been able to order at the bar if we wanted!!. To sum up the Campsite itself was amazing however as a guest sometimes we just felt as if we were in the way of the staff. They really would need some kind of training on Customer Experience.
