I like authentic old world pubs. Far too many places these days have had an 'old style' make-over. The Cowper's oak is a genuine old world establishment. One thing I love is an authentic ploughman's lunch, which is a rarity these days. Both the ploughman's I had and the burger my wife ate here were exemplary. Hats off to hard working bar girl/waitress Harriet and to chef Dan Gibbons. Great beer too. If you are in the area take time to visit and enjoy.

Lovely to eat fresh produce in a nice pub atmosphere. Excellent choice of dishes and great cooking. Good service complimented with friendly staff. Great value for money. This is a shining example of what a good English pub should be. I liked the selection of beers and the local atmosphere.

Visited this pub with a largish group and we were delighted to be given an area to ourselves. Although we were sitting together, we were still part of the pub and could enjoy the buzz from the main bar area yet were on our own. A cold evening, the roaring log fire made it feel like a real home from home.
Eating off of a special menu (at a special price), which had been compiled for our visit and we were impressed at what had been put together for us. No fast or cheap options to maximise profit, this was simply a selection from the main menu which enabled the landlord to hold his prices down and give us an efficient service - was it value for money? Too true it was.
3 starters (Soup, whitebait or asparagus), 3 mains (Steak and ale pie, pork schnitzel or Gnocchi) and 4 desserts/cheese board ensured something for everyone.
The food quality was perfect. Well cooked, well presented and very tasty. Everyone in the party commented favourably with a few deciding they would be going back again independently, the were so impressed.
The pub carries a good range of real ales, spirits and wines and all at a very reasonable price and the staff were very pleasant making this a really enjoyable evening.

Dined here with friends after hearing great reviews which were spot on. Once you can make a decision from the menu choices on offer you won't be disappointed! Can highly recommend the lamb and the rib eye steak with homemade chips is top of the list! One of our friends is gluten free and the waitress was only too pleased to help and advise on menu choices.
The service is also excellent and despite being a full and busy restaurant our drinks were kept topped up with no waiting.
Would highly recommend this little pub and what it has to offer!
