We visited in June 2012. The appearance of the hotel on the corner of the village is just amazing. 21st Century next to 15th. Sun glinting off the multi coloured metal roof. The food was fantastic Michelin starred too. We were in the main hotel a nice big room. We went on the wine tour which was very interesting from the old to the ultra new. Probably the most advanced set up I have seen and fully automated. The wine is not bad. Their Sauvignon one of the best Spanish whites I have enjoyed. The Spa area is good with some interesting and different treatments. Great and different pool area too. Evening meal is inside, but lunch and breakfast can be outside on the terrace with amazing views of the town and surrounding mountains. A Totally amazing experience. Very special.

For the best Rioja, food and architecture you cannot de better than this place, they are dog friendly as well as people friendly. Our room opened up onto row upon row of vines with a short walk to the indoor pool. The wine tour is well worth doing with lots of history on the Rioja wine process. I can thoroughly recommend the Grand reserva, and blue label Marques Reserva. Both good for laying down, although a bit pricey well worth the effort. The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao is not far to drive, the hotel was designed by the same architect Frank Gehry.

Room Tip: Ask for ground floor by the pool

This is a remarkable hotel, in a wonderful location with stunning views, nice spa and high class restaurant.

Be warned however, if you don't know what to expect then you may be disappointed and a lot poorer so hopefully this review will help inform you and should you decide to go, help avoid you ordering a €20 tiny poached egg when hungry!

So, firstly we booked using Starwood points and cash and were delighted with the discount. Breakfast was extra at €15 for a buffet of gourmet ham and cheese.

The stay includes a free tour of the winery with two tastings of thier entry wines afterwards. The is a bar however where you could sample a glass of thier higher end wines for between €5-€7 a glass which is a third of the price in thier restaurant.

Ah yes, the restaurant. We dined in thier fouffy restaurant and it was probably a mistake as the tiny poached egg as a starter for €20 still makes me smile at the extravegance - it mush have been some hen that laid that egg! The main of lamb was excellent and a little more filling, but if dining there I would recommend the mains as starters also or else do the tasting menu. But be prepared for €100 spend per head and I am not sure its worth it. Service was great but you really need to enjoy fine dining to appreciate it.

Spa was nice but small - really just a pool, hot tub and steam room with some nice relaxing areas. Treatments around €100 and As we didn't prebook we didn't manage to enjoy.

Drive is 3 1/2 hours from Madrid and for a special occasion it's worth a visit, but I suspect not all tastes will appreciate everything they have at the prices they charge.

Architecture is stunning. You can tell you are somewhere special.

My wife and I stayed at Marques de Riscal for a few nights in October. The hotel is visually spectacular - some of the most unique, sophisticated architectural elements I've ever encountered.

The rooms are small, so if you have several large bags, it can difficult to navigate around the room. That being said, the view, the incredible bed and the inspiring design more than offset any difficulties presented by the room size.

The spa is definitely worth the expense. Clean, modernist design.

The wine is excellent and the wine tour is fascinating. Seeing bottles of wine from the 19th century in the context of a modern winemaking facility was quite memorable.

The property has nice bikes that are free to use for riding around the property or adjacent towns.

The service at the hotel is great. We enjoyed interacting with everyone from the front desk to the wait staff in the restaurants.

The location is terrific. If you're into wine, the hotel is within 20 minutes from most of the top producers in the region.

We stayed for less than 24 hours and managed to fit in a tour of the winery, lunch at Bistro 1860 (see other review), spa session with massage and dinner at Gastronomic Restaurant (yet another review)! Lovely, relaxing weekend!
Staff are very professional, yet friendly and nothing is too much for them, reception staff from arrival to check out were wonderful as were the breakfast waiters and spa attendants.
Wine tour is interesting and worth it.
Food delicious - breakfast was perfect - a choice of cold buffet filled with top quality local and Spanish meats, cheeses and pastries, good fruit, yoghurt and pastry selection. Freshly squeezed orange juice and good coffee. Also made to order eggs, bacon etc.
Room: we were lucky to stay in the main building; rooms are quirky in that the main sleeping area obviously has been adapted to the Gehry architecture. Very comfortable beds and there is a pillow menu.
Bathrooms are complete with loads of towels, robes, slippers and high quality products. Plentiful hot water and good pressure.
We had no problem with this, but at turn down service, when curtains are drawn, the room does get slightly "cosy" ie. small. This is because, due to strange angles of windows, the curtains are almost one metre in to room, making it MUCH smaller. However, there is free wifi, free bottle of wine and chill out music so all in all very comfortable. The best views of the original building and larger bedrooms are in the spa annexe, but we thought that, at least for one night, it was probably preferable to stay in the Gehry building.
Spa was good - massages and facials, although expensive, worth it, as was the pool area.
Although the hotel was almost full, there was a sense of relaxation all around and the professional staff enabled all guests to feel comfortable and welcome.
Be aware to take your room card at all times; we went for a couple of walks and were requested by security to show them in order to get back to hotel - probably a neccessary measure, but a bit agressive.
This hotel is definitely worth a visit for one or two days, just read my reviews on the restaurants and you will have a perfect stay!

Room Tip: Something with character - go for the original building. If you want something larger, go for annex...

A lovely extended weekend break, i a most magnificent hotel. As you drive up towards the hotel at the winery, the sight takes one's breath away. An amazing design, matched then by the service inside, the quality of the rooms, and the astonishingly good food. The spa treatments are also fantastic. Only issue is the price - it is 'out of here' expensive, just falling short on balancing price and quality, so 'value' is not good. But on the other hand, for a luxury experience, maybe once or twice in a lifetime, then this is just the hotel for you!

I stumbled upon the Hotel Marqués de Riscal while researching a trip to Barcelona. I became enthralled by the Frank Gehry design and decided to make a road trip from Barcelona to Elciego, then Bilbao, San Sebastian and another sleepover in Pamplona. We were not upset with our room in the annex as it was large and had pleasing views of the vineyard and of the main building when we crossed the covered bridge. The pool area is also in the annex. We ate dinner and brunch in the hotel’s wonderful dining room and relaxed on the terrace of the main building. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Do not miss a visit to nearby Ysios Vineyard with a building almost as striking as the Marqués.

Room Tip: If you can't book in the main building the connected annex will do fine.
