This building is just magical. Standing out in an otherwise typical Wine country setting, the Marques de Riscal is just poetry in 21st Century architecture. Every corner, within and outside the structure, makes one pause to savor the view. We were there two (short) days and could not get tired of enjoying the views of the building. Almost imagine as if you could spend a night sleeping at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.... well, the Marques de Riscal almost lets you do that transporting you to the genious of Frank Gehry. We chose to have dinner at the terrace of the 1860 Bistro and it was memorable. Perfect temperature, superb views, incredibly peaceful, a great meal of local delicacies and different Rioja wines to pair with each selection made for a perfect dinner, which we extended until the restaurant closed, as if not wanting to let the moment go by. Wow!!!

The room was very spacious, well set up, with great attention to details, and the views of the vineyards through the Gehry metal ribbons were out of this world, as if challenging us to believe if all could be real. All the service and support people were pleasant, corteous and extremely helpful. The resort is also amazingly quiet and also guarded jelously so no one can come in unless staying at the hotel.

The free tour of the Marques de Riscal winery was a great complement and a perfect fit for a unique and memorable experience. Definitely at the top of the list to come back and celebrate the beauty of the place.

Visiting this hotel with a small group, we expected spectacular architecture - Frank Gehry is a known, if unorthodox quantity - and given its 5 star status and Michelin starred restaurant we thought it would be a special experience. We were right.

The architecture is spectacular and as a friend said "it puts a smile on your face". I can't think of many hotels that are visually as unique as this. Our room in the Gehry building was just wonderful; spacious, great views, equipped to a very high standard, spotlessly clean and with a bathroom as good as any we have had in a hotel. I guess that if you don't like modern architecture and interior designs, this may not be the hotel for you.

We chose to use room service on our first evening (to accompany the complimentary bottle of wine) and were very impressed. Efficient service delivered our order and the food was excellent - a club sandwich and a delicious desert made a very acceptable light meal.

Breakfast was excellent. Not the vast array of self service options presented in some hotels, but a more than adequate selection of fresh high quality produce and hot food cooked to order and served by smiling helpful staff.

I think the added ingredient is this hotel, which we perhaps did not expect, were the staff. They get rave reviews in Trip Advisor, and they are well deserved, being friendly, helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

So does this hotel have a weak link? Well I have to say that our group had a pre-ordered meal in the restaurant, and I found it slightly disappointing. There was nothing actually wrong with the meal, but given the reputation of the restaurant I felt it was not what I had expected. Of course this may have a lot to do with the pre-ordered menu, so not necessarily the fault of the restaurant, but the menu sounded a bit uninspiring. I do not eat meat and was a little surprised to get two very similar fish courses, the second being instead of the meat. A vegetarian friend simply did not get a main course! A little bit more imagination would have been good - but like I said this may not be entirely the fault of the restaurant. Perhaps the big problem was my high expectations, and I did enjoy the meal.

I am going to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and give this hotel 5 stars because it deserves it. It is an exceptional hotel and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Room Tip: I am sure all of the rooms are good - but go for one in the Gehry building rather than the annexe ac...

The property and building are stunning. The room accommodations are exceptional. The service is first class. Great location for visiting the many wineries within 15 minutes drive. However, there are opportunities for improvement.

On our second night in the room, I heard a loud crash in the bathroom in the middle of the night. The towel rack fell off the wall, leaving all of our towels sitting in the bathtub below. On several occasions, I also discovered a few ants roaming around the bathroom sink. I alerted the front desk of the towel rack and ants, and she only asked if the ants were near the window, which they were not, and she offered to take care of everything while we visited area wineries. We returned to find our towels folded on the sink because the staff removed the towel rack without replacing it. We also found more ants on a few more occasions during our stay. The staff did little to fix the problem and nothing to make up for it.

Pro tip: Visit the wine shop in the wine village, where the winery tour culminates, to purchase bottles of wine for your stay at the hotel. The wine bar at the hotel charged us 16-20 euro for the bottles that could be purchased at the wine shop, only steps away, for 4-8 euro.

Room Tip: In the middle of a vineyard, all rooms have nice views of the landscape.

This is a stunning property from the design to the service view points.
With some 40 rooms only it is truly luxurious and exclusive. My room (no 12) offered a great view on the village nearby, spaciously designed with great amenities.
We dined in the two restaurants, the brasserie and the fine dining room; By far we preferred the first one, less pretentious food wise, preferring more earthy food than the fancy cooking.
Well when traveling in this part of Spain, I can only recommend a visit here, which I am sure will be a memorable one!

The hotel itself is an incredible display of art and architecture, but what makes it really special is the staff. From the moment we checked in and Pedro, escorted us to our room, the magical journey began. Everyone, from Yolanda in the wine lounge, to Diego at the front door, and Marta who gave us a tour of the Marques de Riscal winery, was fantastic. Our room had a panoramic view of the church in ElCiego, and was quite large and very comfortable. If you are planning a trip to the wine country of Spain, you must plan to stay at this fabulous hotel.

Just a one night stay on our drive to Barcelona. Unique architectural designed hotel. Welcoming staff, all were enthusiastic and helpful. Amazing views of the mountains from our room (#14). Food, wine and service all good and we would definitely have stayed another night. Yes, it was expensive but a real treat. Lots of Bodegas to visit, many within walking distance of the hotel.

We stay at the Hotel Marques de Riscal for 2 nights during our vacation in March 2014. Before the trip, I agonized over choosing this hotel, given the somewhat mixed bag of reviews on Tripadvisor. In the end however, the fact that this hotel was part of the Luxury Collection tipped the scales for me, and I was not disappointed.

This is really one building whether you either hate it or you love it. The entire complex stands out from its surroundings, given that the surrounding towns were rather historic, quaint and typically Spanish. Driving in from Barcelona via Zaragoza, an easy 4.5 hour drive, we arrived in the early afternoon. The hotel can be seen from afar, in the bright afternoon sun, the architecture of the building was quite a sight to behold. The property is closed off to the general public, and we had to be buzzed in through the main gates. Parking is free and on the property. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the doorman who helped unload our luggage. Check in was efficient and without incident, and we were escorted to our corner room in the main Frank Gehry building on the first floor.

The room was excellent, very spacious and airy, very warmly decorated in wood and leather. An entrance corridor that is closed off by a sliding door before entering the room proper, which ensures a quiet night. Ceilings are high, bed is very large and comfortable. Ample closet space, large writing desk placed at the foot of the bed, and a large leather bay window seating area with views overlooking some of the vineyards. Amenities included a generous supply of mineral water and a bottle of Marques de Riscal wine. Wifi is free throughout the hotel.

The bathroom was equally spacious, marble and with very high ceilings, so high that a heater was installed to warm the bathroom adequately. Amenities are generous and by Caudalie, plenty of fluffy white towels, with separate bath and shower. Shower is most intricate, took us a while to figure out how to work the controls for the rain shower!

We took a walk around the property after checking in, and found the library and the outdoor patio overlooking the town of Elciego. There is a phone in the library, where you can call the front desk to order up drinks to be served in the library, which we made use of. Watching the sun set against a backdrop created by the town of Elciego and the sunlight glinting off the leaf-like roof of the hotel fairly takes my breath away. Perfect way to rest and relax after a long drive in.

Turn down service is consistent, complete with weather forecast, chocolates and replacement of fresh towels and toiletries. Breakfast was included in our room rate, and we found it to be good and plentiful. Main course is cooked to order from a menu and to taste, the rest of the items are served buffet style.

We attended the vineyard tour of Marques de Riscal, which was at the building next to the hotel. It was informative and very detailed, if a bit more commercial in comparison to some of the other vineyards we had previously visited. I am guessing that visits are free for hotel guests, as we were not charged for the visit, which included a tasting of 3 of their wines.

Location-wise, the hotel is fairly central to all the vineyards we intended to visit, mostly between 25-40 minutes drive away. Laguardia is a short 5-10 minutes drive away, Haro and Logrono is about 25-30 minutes.

The only thing I would have done differently is to plan for meals outside of the hotel. We had dinner at the hotel's famed restaurant on one night, and not only was it costly, it was not at all good in comparison to what could be had in other surrounding towns.

Concierge and staff are all friendly and helpful. Concierge was slightly off with dinner recommendations, but I guess food choices are always subjective and for which they cannot be blamed.

Overall an excellent stay, we will return should we find ourselves in La Rioja again.
