Cathedral Peak is a truly unique property, the scenery is stunning, the staff go out of their way to help and there is never a shortage of things to do.

As it was a special occasion we booked a helicopter flight for the last day of our trip and enjoyed a leisurely flight to the Drakensberg mountains where we stopped for a champagne breakfast.

Other highlights included quad biking, the hotel arranged this with a local company allowing us to explore our surrounds in a truly unique way, this made even more special by the knowledge of our local guide.

I would also say that the sounds of the evening truly bring Cathedral Peak to life, laying in bed of a night time one can hear the calls of the local wildlife - a truly stunning soundtrack to a nights rest.

This was quite a culture shock when we got here as we had been in lodges with a maximum of 10 guests! Apparently this resort can take 250 with day guests as well. The drive to the resort is fabulous, the surrounds breathtaking. Our room was one of the newest block. It was very well appointed, fabulous bath and shower, big picture window little veranda ...BUT view marred by the roof of the block below. I talk of " block " as the rows of rooms are concrete blocks ...with the feel of a barracks until you get inside. However this does not affect how the countryside looks!
The food is all served buffet style and is good and highly varied..you can eat as much as you want! The swimming pools attractive and with plenty of room to sit. Gardens are beautifully tended. A full range of activities are there fro which to chose. We went horse riding , out for an hour and a great way to see the immediate surrounds and get a few bearings. We also had a massage , which was excellent , and a result of the walking and horse riding! The walks are simply set out on maps and through a video guide, but there are also guided walks leaving at various times during the day. You need to take sunscreen, water Adam suitable clothing. We did a 2 and a half hour walk in three hours ...but we walked slowly. It can get very hot and the altitude definitely affected my breathing. We spoke to another English lady and she too felt her breathing was affected. You just have to pace yourself. The service is very good, coffee and biscuits in the morning and tea with scones and cream in the afternoon, served on the terrace all inclusive for guests. Every one was very cheerful and helpful, plugs, hiking sticks can be borrowed from reception, anti histamine cream available from there too! Watch out for pepper ticks! Tiny little so and so that leaves a little rash.
We enjoyed ourselves very much, quite different from the game reserve lodges ....we actually did some exercise to counteract all the food!

Room Tip: If in the new block get a room in the 220 to get the best view without the roof of the block below. We were in 221

We were engaged at Cathedral Peak Hotel in 1998, married there in the chapel in 1999, had our honeymoon there and have returned every year for our wedding anniversary for the last 14 years. Every year the hotel gets better. The setting in the Drakensberg is stunningly beautiful, the staff are always friendly and welcoming and the meals are generous with fresh trout as a delicious extra! Add to that the morning and afternoon indulgent teas and freshly baked treats and you will find that you need to take a hike or two! We have found over the years that a lot of effort and care and expense is put into making the hotel beautiful and relaxing. The golf course has improved every year and must have one of the most magical settings in the world. The honeymoon/executive suites cater to every comfort and have lovely decor and privacy - truly paradise! We can't wait to return and are always sad when our visit comes to an end. The week disappears. This year we are planning on going back in winter as we can't wait for another year for our next visit!

Room Tip: For couples, the Superior and the Executive suites are luxurious and private. However, all the rooms are good and the family rooms are spacious.

We didn't have long enough to enjoy all the hikes and facilities so will have to go back again. The setting is stunning, lots of birdlife to identify, good pool with separate children's area, and a fiendish mini-golf course. Lots of activities available including bowls, tennis and golf as well as horse riding. Our room was well equipped - there are clear advantages in paying higher rates - and the food was plentiful and good. Friendly staff are unobtrusive and helpful.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and get the views.

This was our third stay at Cathedral Peak since 1981 and again it was an excellant stay. Location is awesome and stunning, hotel is still as good as before, very friendly staff, food was excellant with loads of choices at both Breakfast and Dinner. The Rooms were very comfortable and it was good to have a kettle and tray for hot drinks in our room. Choice of sporting activities plus walks and guided hikes. On our next visit to South Africa we will be back.
