We have recently returned to GB after a holiday in SA which included 5 days at this resort . While the last 20 miles or so are not for the faint hearted everything else about our stay far exceeded our expectations . The hotel is situated to give unrestricted views from most public rooms and all accommodation appears to face over the valley towards the hills . The views really do warrant the new expression "truly awesome". We were in a comfortable standard thatched room which had an unrestricted view and was just above the swimming pool . Beautiful sunbirds perched in the Bottle Brush trees beneath our balcony .
The food was the best we have ever had - better even than on cruises we have taken and this applied to quality , quantity and variety. I could not refrain from over eating and returned home with what has been described by a certain author as a "traditional figure ." Deeside water is good but the Cathedral Peak water is better than an expensive hair treatment.
The less active could have a good holiday just socialising , eating and sitting on the balcony. I enjoyed the less perpendicular walks , swam, played bowls and tried to persuade my friends to play tennis with me . The hotel have organised activities both indoors and outside - it's just a case of fitting them in between breakfast, morning coffee , lunch, afternoon tea and dinner!
The only thing I haven't said is that it was great value for money and I am not only a Scot but also an Aberdonians -I say this because we are reputed to be extremely tight-fisted - not that it's true of course . Incidentally I have never felt the urge to write a review before and that says it all.

Room Tip: We were in 306 . There are more modern and deluxe rooms but our room had character and comfort ,and was conveniently near the reception and dining room for the less mobile or in wet weather .

When choosing a place to stay in the Drakensberg we were spoiled for choice due to the many elegant resorts in the area. We chose the Cathedral Peak hotel as it was one of the more costly options. We felt that we would rather pay more and have a superior experience. The setting of the hotel was no disappointment, set against the most dramatic of mountain views, however, the rooms are outdated and in dire need of an upgrade. The “two room” option has the front room experiencing sun and light but the back room is dark and depressing. The dining room as a similar feel to the bedrooms, old and tired, with an assortment of mismatched chairs and old carpets. What a pity that a hotel with such a spectacular setting as not put in the effort to keep the rooms clean, new and fresh. We were thoroughly disappointed and checked out early.

After some initial difficulty making a booking and receiving information directly through the hotel via e-mail about the various room locations at the resort and views, we were happy with our choice once we arrived. The drive to the hotel is in itself spectacular. Having booked the ‘Superior Room’ we were very pleased with the accommodation. The room was extremely spacious, and the hotel placed us in the last room at the end of the hall of the building so it was very quiet – most appreciated. The entrance foyer of our room had a wall of closets with shelving and a huge wall safe large enough for a laptop. The bathroom was large with separate tub and shower. There is no air conditioning however the room has a ceiling fan and windows for ventilation. The open windows were acceptable as we were in an end unit and it was quiet. Other rooms with open windows I suspect would experience noises from the outdoor hall and may disturb ones sleep. I'm not sure why the hotel would not install A/C in these newer rooms. Dining was a surprise as we didn’t know what to expect. Dinner included a choice of salads, breads, cheeses, an evening appetizer, hot dishes and always something carved. Plus there was a stir fry counter which was a complete surprise. Of course there were desserts and considering the size of the hotel and the number of guests to cook for, we found the food to be fresh and very good. Breakfast was an array of breakfast items including cooked to order eggs and omelets. Other than initially booking which was a bit trying, the only other difficulty was checking out. We waited a half hour for someone to arrive at our room to assist with luggage which was unacceptable. Had the reason been because the porters were busy with other rooms than it is understandable. However, it appeared that when the front desk was called the first time, the message may not have been passed on to the porter. A second call was made and a half hour from the first phone call our bags were finally collected. Therefore, this explains my poor rating for service which I must stress is not reflecting the service in the dining room or housekeeping. Overall, we loved our visit.

We were given a gift of a three night stay at Cathedral Peak Hotel. Our room was large and very comfortable with stunning views of the mountains from our little stoep. The meals were excellent, and the staff was helpful and courteous. We went on several of the walks advertised by the hotel. Some were easy for oldies like us, aged 63 and 70 respectively. We just did not manage the climb to Mushroom Rock as we are not the fittest. We were also given a complimentary Swedish massage by our children who sent us on the getaway. It was a wonderful, relaxing experience. We celebrated our wedding anniversary in style and were sorry when we had to say goodbye.

Room Tip: We had Room No 60 which was close enough to all the amenities. Walking around we saw that rooms numbered in the 400's seemed to be a bit further away from the dining area, but the views of the peaks and the bell were stunning. All these rooms are on ground level.

The mountain views are unsurpassed, the rooms were extremely spacious and well designed (there was free wi-fi which was not even advertised) and the buffets had a great assortment of food that was all excellent. The pool area was lovely and the hikes are an adventure. Be sure to visit the chapel - it's a gem.

Room Tip: Pay a tiny bit more and get an executive suite - #404 is probably the best
