“An 83% rating with a "Certificate of Excellence".....really?”
Reviewed 13 October 2013

We love TripAdvisor and use the site regularly, but in our opinion, reviewers have missed the mark on this one. We booked a 300Euro a night Troglodyte room, number 9, for 5 nights, thinking it would be a good home base from which to discover the Loire region. As we approached the hotel, we were holding our breath as we looked around at the row of hotels on the busy roadway. The reception is tiny and uninviting, furthering our concern about the place. Then we were shown to our room. The "cave" walls look like flocking on a Christmas tree, or perhaps a heavy popcorn ceiling......everywhere. The lighting is poor, which may enhance the "cave-like" feeling, but it isn't practical for anything like reading. The furnishings are dated, very dated, and in fact I wasn't comfortable sitting on the bed covering because I wondered how clean it could be after so many years. There is even a brown shag area rug.....need I say more? The bathroom smelled slightly of urine and there is no shower, only a tub with a hand sprayer. We literally sat down immediately to our computers to find another hotel because it was clear to both of us we were not staying in that depressing den for 5 nights. As a side note, wifi is spotty and I had to hang my head out the window, on a rainy evening, for proper phone reception. With the help of our tour guides who we will review later, we found Domaine de La Tortiniere, where we are happily staying now. After booking at La Tortiniere for the following 4 nights, we went to reception to let the gentleman there know our plans. Although initially defensive, I have to give the them credit in the end for letting us check out the next morning without threat of further penalty. We did have dinner at Les Haute Roches that night, mostly because we felt bad about the situation, and as I said, it was pouring outside so we weren't keen on venturing out. The dinner was surprisingly good, although VERY pricy. The dining room is as dated as the room, but the service and the food were more than adequate. After a restless night on a very uncomfortable, soft mattress, we were off to our next destination early the next morning with a $686.60 hotel bill for our trouble. We felt it was important to post this review to save other travelers the experience we had. Our advise, move on....DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO STAYING HERE! This place is nothing more than bad kitsch.

Just a three day break to see some chateaux before travelling on to daughter and family who live in France. Great experience, staying in a cave room. Excellent restaurant, with good service and well presented food. Difficulty getting WiFi reception in our room (No.2) but it was OK in the lounge and bar. I am not used to restaurants where dinner is 95 euros (plus drinks) but as a once in a while experience, not too painful. Good restaurants a short drive down the road, where we ate at La Scala one evening. 2 nights we ate at the hotel. Just over £1000 for our three nights. Fair value.

On our way back from the SW of France to the UK and searching for a hotel with parking, dog friendly, and a good restaurant the Hautes Roches is hard to beat. Making advance arrangements was very easy thanks to the charming staff, who welcomed our dog into the hotel and the restaurant. It's perched above the Loire within striking distance of Tours and also the Vouvray vineyards, with most of the rooms hewn into the cliff behind the hotel. They call these "Troglodyte" rooms and they were indeed part cave, but very spacious and ours came with a useful hallway and great views over the river. We dined in the hotel restaurant and had a great meal too.

We stayed here two nights before beginning a biking tour of the Loire Valley. The hotel staff has been extraordinarily welcoming and helpful. We arrived tired off a long over night and train ride and hungry and they sent up a beautiful cheese and sweets plate to hold us til dinner. Dinner was very good (we had only an appetizer the first night) and service very attentive. From the other reviews i read I was wary, but then i had a completely opposite. -- and wonderful -- experience. The room was very pleasantly decorated and clean, with a spa run and a window looking out on the river

We stayed only one night at Les Hautes Roches, but we were made very welcome. We arrived late, and were offered complimentary coffee and tea, much appreciated. Our room, up 34 stairs and in a troglodyte cavern, was spacious, luxurious and very comfortable, and it was lovely to wake the next morning to sunlit views of the Loire. Breakfast was on the pricy side (tends to happen in pricy hotels) but very fresh, with good coffee and tea, and top quality patisserie. It was delightful to be served promptly by a polite waiter, rather than have to jostle around a buffet. We did not visit the restaurant. One grouse - why on earth is there no complimentary bottled water in the room? We expect this in a good hotel.

We stayed in this hotel for 1 night in a cave room. Before the troglodites lived in these caves and it was very unusual to have such accomodation. Room was spacious with nice decoration. There was a beatiful view on Louire river from it. In hotel there is a swimming pool. Staff was very friendly.

We stayed here for nights as a base to explore various chateaus in the Valley. As others said it is a bit dated and grounds not well kept, but the room was very spacious and the fact that you are in a cave is a unique experience. There was a nice view of the river and the room was very quiet. We very much enjoyed the tasting menu at the restaurant sitting in the terrace overlooking the river. I believe the restaurant was one Michelin starred and did not disappoint. The service is rather slow but it also allowed us to relax and enjoy the nice evening.

While staying at this hotel, I recommend doing a tour at Marc Bredif winery located right next door. They produce very nice Vouvray and the guide was very passionate about the wine production. The hotel restaurant serves their wines although you may be put off by the hotel prices after seeing how reasonable the bottles are priced at the winery. On the second night we dined at a local restaurant called Embarcadere recommended by the hotel. It was a nice local restaurant where you can enjoy sausages, beef tartar, etc. We liked the fact that you can select a bottle of wine at their wine store attached to the restaurant at an extremely reasonable price.
