“Comfortable hotel in the heart of the Loire”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We stayed in two troglodyte rooms, which were atmospheric, quite large and very quiet. The only downside was that they can be quite cool. The staff were helpful with restaurant reservations. On Sunday and Monday evenings, the restaurant is closed and the closest alternatives are a short drive away, which is a little frustrating. But we had a very impressive dinner on the terrace on our final night with excellent food and wine. There was a generous French breakfast (fruit salad, yoghurt, pastries).

I have generally booked one of the rooms in the main building, above the reception/restaurant. These rooms are large and comfortable with great views over the Loire and good double glazing which cuts out any road noise. We have stayed in a troglodyte room as well and found these interesting but not my first choice.

Beyond the comfort of the room and its facilities, we have always been impressed by the quality of the staff and the wonderful restaurant.
The staff are helpful, friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. For example we have always asked the sommelier to recommend a local wine for us to try, and he has always come up with something interesting, well priced and eminently pleasant and drinkable.

The food is faultless ... our stuffed squid followed by sole goujons and souffle dessert was excellent, and they well deserve their michelin rating.

This is one of my top-10 favourite hotels in France as it is well placed, well appointed, well staffed and consistently excellent.

It would also come close to the top of my list for dog-friendly hotels.

the main issue with this hotel is that they charge relais & chateau prices without the standard. we planned orginally to stay three nights but checked out after one night. important to note is that there is no food service in the evenings on sunday and monday, not even peanuts can be found to have with a drink on the terrace. the resturaunt that was reccomended nearby was not to a good standard and there were no other options around, zero snack options at the hotel, nothing in the mini bar except water and a half bottle of champagne. staff was an absolute minimum, I think only two young men were working all afternoon sunday. breakfast on monday seemed equally understaffed. the fruit was del monte fruit cocktail from a can. we stayed in the main house and it smelled mouldy and there was a smell in the wc like it had not been cleaned properly. luckily they let us check out with no hassle and we went to a b&b in tours. the hauts roches hotel has a lot of potential, it is a unique establishment, but the proprietors need to invest and get it up to luxe standards, especially considering it is quite remote.

In a recent visit to the Loire Region we did not stay at this hotel but did visit for dinner, we had high expectations with the Relais & Chateaux listing. We were not disappointed the service, food and wine choices were all very good. Service in the Restaurant is what you would expect from a hotel of this class..

We had lobster to start, it was beautiful and beef for mains topped off by dessert of apple tart Tatin. Overall we were impressed. We had a bottle of local Vouvray which was excellent.

Why not 5 stars - whilst the food was good it was very expensive, we had equally good food for half the price elsewhere in France.

I cannot comment on the rooms, we stayed in a cave B & B in Vouvray but would include a night at the Hautes Roches if we were traveling through the Loire again..

Stayed here for one night. Very large comfortable room (approx 60sqM) troglodyte so very cave like. Lovely view of the Loire River. Very quiet. Parking
The staff in the restaurant seemed to have given themselves the right to choose certain things for the client. We were not given a choice for table water, the dessert of one of our party arrived before the others in the party had finished the previous course even though they too were to take dessert. These may seem like small things but when you are out for a nice meal these things do matter.
This is a Relais and Chateuax property so needs to be doing better.

Room Tip: Troglodyte room

The position and character of this hotel make it worth a stay, but the road between the hotel and the river is extremely busy and detracts from the otherwise peaceful position. We stayed in Room 8, which has a spiral stone staircase up to a cavernous (literally!) room with large windows and wide views over the hotel grounds and the Loire river. There is a large municipal water tower on the otherwise tree-lined further bank.
But please note that on a Monday night, the hotel has a skeleton staff and the restaurant is closed. This means that even a breadstick or an olive can not be found to accompany your cocktail on the terrace, and service is slow. So if you are staying for one night, do not make it a Monday. We walked ten minutes along the road west to L'Embarcadere restaurant (rustic French) for supper. The pavement is very uneven and a torch is recommended - or a taxi.

Room Tip: Room 8 is in one of the caves, with its own spiral stone staircase, and a good view.

I really wanted to stay in a troglodyte hotel during our trip to the Loire valley. And now I can say I have and can check that off the list of things I need to do in my lifetime. But we really should have skipped this.

The room was pricey, so you pay dearly to stay in a cave. It's neat for a minute, but then you are just in a hotel room. And it was warm in the room on a cool late May Day. And there is no air conditioning. You would think that a cave would be cool, but not so. I can't imagine how unbearably hot it would be on a warm day! And it is very dark in the room at night. I am sure there are issues with lighting a cave, but it is something to consider when choosing your lodging. I imagined the bathroom being very cool. I don't know what I had in mind, but a cave bathroom seemed like it could be very neat. Instead this looked like a newly redone motel bathroom in the US. Boring, but clean.

If I had it to do all over again, I would have skipped this hotel. You will get plenty of chances to visit caves that are wineries, stores, mushroom farms, pear farms, restaurants... When sitting at your computer reading about lodging in France, it seems cool to stay in a Relais & Chateaux operated cave hotel. But the hotel isn't really up to the R&S standards and other than the cave setting, it has nothing else to offer.
