“Great zoo, was very empty when we visited”

We went on a rainy weekday in December since we were scheduled for a 2pm visit to the Ghibli museum 10 minutes walk from the zoo. It was pleasant and had a lot of Japanese animals, but nothing very exotic.
The guinea pig petting area was a real treat, and since there were no other visitors we didn't feel ashamed as adults to go and play with the animals. We also took advantage of the kids play area inside the cabin, since there weren't any kids in the entire park.
As others have said I wouldn't specific plan a trip or go out of my way to visit, but it was a pleasant trip and the tickets were very affordable (discount if you bring passport).

The zoo itself is lovely and clean, well laid out. Lots of seats and shade, the added bonus of the playground and small amusement rides was a nice surprise. Rides were only 100 yen, great value. Not a lot of animals to see, kids loved the aquarium and guinea pig petting area. If you are in the area go, however would not make a special trip to visit. Remember passports if you are visiting and kids under 12 are free, which makes it very cheap.

took us a while to figure out the way to the park zoo from Kichijoji Station, about 15-20mins.

tourists get a discount by showing passport.
there's a section for viewing the guinea pigs. cute to the max.

you can actually bring food into the park zoo and sit under the sakura tree to have a picnic. it's spacious and relaxing.

This is a good park to bring kids, out of town visitors, and to meet with adults. There is a small man-made lake with rentable row boats and "swan boats". There are restaurants that line park and Kichijoji is a great place to wander. Very beautiful at cherry blossom (sakura) time, although very busy.
