“A cricket lovers dream”

Sir Paul Getty Cricket ground
Reviewed 11 August 2014

If you can imagine a sophisticated version of the perfect village green cricket ground this it. Situated in its own natural bowl with thatched scoreboard and club house this is cricket heaven. If you were asked to design your ideal cricket pitch this would tick nearly all the boxes. If you love cricket this is your home from home.

Sir Paul took some wise advise when planning this accessible (from M40, but NOT from a local railway station) cricket ground and emplyed Harry Brind the ex Surrey CCC groundsman and the result is one of the best cricket grounds in the country. Awesome is an understatement. The ground now has its own website to advertise matches, which is a big improvement on years past when a cloak of secrecy appeared over matches being played. There were few food outlets when I went, so take your own, but that aside, enjoy your day at the ground.

The Wormsley cricket ground is the epitome of all that is good; beautiful arcadian setting; impeccable ground curation; in sympathy with its idyllic rural setting and thankfully now open on limited occasions for the public to enjoy its amenities. Hearty thanks are due to the Getty family for having created this unique facility and for allowing access to it and glimpses of the wider estate, through which visitors visitors drive as they arrive.

My wife and I are regular visitors to the Garsington Opera at Wormsley which uses the cricket ground as the backdrop for opera catering (Jamie Oliver), so we know it well.

It is also to be the venue for the 4-day women's Ashes cricket test match in August 2013.

We attended the recent Unicorns vs Gloucestershire cricket match at Wormley. Mrs FB2000 agreed to come along mainly to see the Getty estate and she wasn’t disappointed. After entering through a gate off the Ibstone road you follow a small road through the hills and farmland, observing the 20mph speed limit, until you eventually get to the sheep field used as the car park for the cricket.

The Cricket ground itself is beautiful and is quite rightly considered one of the nicest in England. There is an old fashioned pavilion on a raised bank on one side with raised banks either side of the thatched score board on the other. The outfield was in tremendous condition too.

Spectators not in the hospitality area should bring their own chairs or blankets, although many were content to sit on the grass bank. Most of the crowd also brought their own food and drinks with them, some of them also brought their own tables as well. For those unprepared, there is a Jamie Oliver tent selling burgers, hot dogs, soup, tea/coffee and bottles beer and soft drinks. There is also a kiosk where Champagne/Wine can be purchased ( 8 GBP for a glass of Champagne ) whilst an ice-cream trolley went round the ground selling cornets at 2 GBP each.

The setting is ideal for cricket, so that even those not particularly interested in the game can still have a super day out. Mrs FB2000 had such a great day she even asked when the next match would be !
