On our way from Germany to Croatia, we needed to stop overnight somewhere. We were driving for more than eight hours, and Rottenmann was conveniently placed on our way (and, I have to admit, the name sounded funny enough to visit).
We didn't choose hotel Kofler, it chose us - there were road signs easy to follow all the way from the main road. The people in hotel were nice and friednly, the free parking was in front of the hotel, and the price of the room was reasonable. The room was charming, with a wiev on the main street and the huge surrounding mountains, the beds were very comfortable (nice and soft), and there was a nice cool breeze from the mountains, so we had a very good night sleep after their excellent in-house brewed beer. Breakfast was fine, as expected in Austria.

The Hotel-Gasthof Kofler is situated on the main street in Rottenmann.
It's a gasthof with a charming and ancient atmosphere, the restaurant is hardly changed in the last 50 years, but there's nothing wrong with that since the hotel it's well kept and it has an old austrian dark feeling everywhere.
We stayed on the second floor in a giant old room with large furnitures and an extremely thick radiator which would have used up 20% of the space in any modern hotel room.
Don't arrive between 2 and 4 pm since the then the entrance is closed and the old couple running the Hotel are all asleep.
Go to the Hotel restaurant in the bottom floor for something to eat in the evening and smell the atmosphere of ancient Schweinebraten in the wallpapers.
Recommended!

Room Tip: Choose the one with the thick radiator if staying in the winter.

This small 1000 year old mountain digging and university place right in the Styrian alps looks much better than its name sounds in English.

I found charming Hotel Kofler because on business I have to drive from Linz to Graz rather often in the evening andf then the questions arises, where to stay overnight after crossing the Pyhrn tunnel and before arriving in Leoben (2nd largest Styrian town)

No long search necessary, you leave the Autobahn at Rottenmann, go straight into the center and find it on Hauptstrfaße 4. Traditional building, thick walls, large rooms with some romantic alpine decoration from former times. Clean, modern bathroom. Very friendly welcome, young blonde lady checked me in in just 2 minutes.

When I returned downstairs into the restaurant I saw some other guests enjoying their meals, but she had already laid a private table for me and lit a candle. I chose a Wiener Schnitzel and a glass of wine and both were delicious. Then I went for a little walk thru the old town, where you'll find everything if you need to do some shopping.

Please note that you won't find the hotel with its 12 rooms (sauna offered free of charge) in a reservation system, just go to their homepage and/or call them.

In the morning a substantial cold buffet breakfast was served and within 5 minutes I was back on the road to Graz ....
