“Belle Dune break”
Reviewed 8 September 2013

A nice setting for a holiday, close to 2 local villages. Very good for families with kids. Also exellent for golfers.
About an hour from Calais along the E16, and plenty to do in the surrounding areas.
Well worth a visit !

We loved this place only fault was that we only had 2 nights here. The apartment was well equipped clean and comfortable. Previous reviews mention that the place looks tired but this was certainly not what we found. All the staff are friendly and helpful. Yes you pay extra for bike hire etc but no more than you would in the UK. The resort is very picturesque and close to a lovely beach. It's great for family breaks especially with the aqua club, my son loved the waves and the kids water slides. As other reviews say there is a strictly no swim shorts policy so remember your trunks. We came away relaxed, refreshed and this is defiantly on the list of places to visit again.

Good family holiday helped by excellent weather. The grandchildren particularly enjoyed the swimming pool and scoot erring around the plaza in the centre of the village. The village is well laid out and safe for children.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, the village is very attractive and it's only a short walk to Fort-Mahon. Accomodation is good but be prepared to spend extra on many things such as bike hire, mini golf etc. The aquaclub is great fun but make sure you take a suitable pair of trunks, shorts are not allowed and I had to buy a very expensive pair of regulation trunks from the shop. All in all a good holiday and I intend to return.

The thing about Belle Dune is... reliability. If you want hotel quality accommodation, a concierge and fine dining, don't go (although there are plenty of nice restaurants in the nearby towns of Quand and Fort Mahon). If you want reasonably priced house or apartment accommodation, near the beach, with kids clubs and optional activities, only 1 hour from the tunnel, try it.

We have been here 7 times in the last decade. We use it as a base rather than making the most of the facilities available, though in earlier years the kids clubs were ok. The teniss courts are acceptable for a reasonable game. We stay in the 'plage' area which is about half a mile from the centre of the complex - its quieter, the accommodation is nicer and there is an uncrowded outdoor pool.

Accommodation is basic but functional and clean. Always rent a size larger than you think - the brochure trick is to call 4 person accommodation 1 bedroom and 1 sofabed. The staff are helpful particularly in the bike shop - even if you take your own. Its a great area for cycling but lock your bikes up behind your house rather than in the storage in front as there is an on-going low level problem with theft and vandalism. The sand yachting is great fun too.

Avoid the restaurant there like the plague - the food is poor quality with slow and vacant service and overpriced. As I said earlier, there are many eateries locally ranging from café food to haute (ish) cuisine. There is a supermarket a mile away

Room Tip: Plage area if you want a bit less frenetic activity

We stayed at the resort (Maisons De La Plage area) for the last week of August. The location is great and very easy to get to from the UK. The kids loved it and the 2 Bed VIP house we had was very clean and had all we needed. The Aqua Park was great and was enjoyed by all. The onsite restaurant was quick and the food decent. We also went on the steam train (cannot remember the town name) but brochure was at reception. Really good day out! The local beaches are perfect for the kids to play.

You need however make sure that you do not leave any washing or kids toys outside your house overnight! On the Wednesday we left some items outside the back door and these were stolen. This happened to a few families we spoke to on the same night. One family had all there washing stolen that was out! The family next to us had their kids buggy slashed with a knife. When we reported this to reception they were not really interested and said we need to go to the police and report it there if we wanted to claim on insurance.

Very disappointing that management did not even contact us to ask for any details. I appreciate that they cannot be held responsible for this but I got the feeling that this had happened before and they did not want to make a issue of it. The resort is open, especially where we were so it is very easy for outsiders to get right up to the houses and into the back gardens.

I'll start by saying that I am a firm believer that you don't get 5 star service for 2 star prices so having paid around £750 for the house for a family of 5 in school holidays I feel that this is very reasonable when you take into account the lovely setting.

On arriving early, reception took our phone number to tx when room was ready. You do not get towels supplied so we paid 6 Euro per towel bundle p.p. (1 hand, 1 bath) and 20 Euro for the room safe for the week. Once we got the keys we found our house which was sandwiched between 2 others which was fine. The Car Parks can be situated some way from the houses so you have to cart everything on trollies to your house - If you have a lot of stuff (like us) then it can take a few journeys.

The whole setting and houses are very picturesque although on closer inspection it could do with a lick of paint here and there.

House:
The house was a 2 bed Select for 5/6 people, It was situated in Les Eaux Vives area which was very convenient with young boys who could go back and forth to the main square / Pool and Football area and close to the water. Being further out in Maison La Plage (beach) would have been a bit of a nightmare as we have a 3 y.o and having to trudge back each time would have been a chore. The inside space seemed fine with a table for 6, I feel we may have been allocated an accessible room as there was a large toilet/shower room with disable facilities.

Bedroom 1 Double upstairs - Plenty big enough we moved the single sofabed so our daughter was next to our bed upstairs.Signs of damp/mould in the corner but didn't concern us too much.
Bedroom 2 - V Small with bunks, little storage.
Lounge - There was a pull-out sofa bed which seemed pretty sturdy and not the sort where 2 people would end up in the same space by the morning(!)also another separate single sofa bed. Small Flatscreen TV with No English channels we don't go on holiday for the TV, but would have been handy to keep littl'uns entertained from time to time. Double doors going out to a shared rear garden over-looking part of the golf course.
Toilet/Wet Room - This was pretty grim and smelt very damp. We used the upstairs bathroom for washing.
Bathroom - Very clean and bright, no toilet. The staircase was incredibly narrow and creaky so if you need to go in the night you woke everyone up!
Kitchen - Open plan to the lounge, This did not have adequate facilities in order to cook a family meal for 6 people every night. There is only so much you can do with an electric hob so this is my main gripe. Get rid of the dishwasher and replace with an oven!! The restaurant even advertised that you can buy a chicken and hire a slow cooker from them for you to eat at home. They recognise that they haven't supplied enough equipment and cash in on it!! Also there is no toaster, doesn't sound too bad but cereal or croissants every day can get a bit dull. Or there's an English cooked breakfast at the restaurant (around 40 Euro for our family of 5).

Facilities:

Pool -Kids loved the flumes and the pool was well heated outside too. The wave machine inside can be quite ferocious! Make sure the kids are confident swimmers if they venture to the deep end.
V strict rules, as mentioned before, speedos only. Don't ever attempt to walk through with a bag I did and someone ran after me and escorted me out. Even though there is a pool snack bar. With just speedos on - i'm not sure where you are supposed to stash your euros to buy anything!!

Football/Tennis court:
Very tired looking, kids didn't seem to mind though.

Golf:
Only went on the driving range - 6 euro for 2 baskets of balls.

Boating:
Kids enjoyed the kayaking (6 Euro for 30 mins) and the Electric boats (around 9 Euro for 20 mins).

Farm:
Small farm with a couple of goats, hens etc. All seemed clean and well-kept.

Restaurant:
We had paid in advance for 3 meals per person so opted for having 3 evening meals of 3 courses. 72 Euro an adult and 27 Euro per child. The food was nice with a set menu each night plus a choice of about 5 different starters/mains/desserts did get a bit 'samey' by the 3rd night. Had a bit of a language problem on the first night trying to explain that we had already paid for our meals upfront.

Bar:
This was empty virtually all the time it had a pool table, pinball and an arcade machine.

Entertainment:
The shows are all in french and the usual holiday camp fayre. What's more to say. One night there was a good firework display but other than that nothing particularly impressive.

A small road train serves the whole complex which is split over various areas separated by roads and roundabouts plus back and forth to the 2 main beaches. Fort Mahon Plage and Quend. There is a Carrefour supermarket nearby also to get your supplies.

I would recommend:

The Steam Train from Le Crotoy - to St Valery (Baie of Somme). It's around a 25 min drive from the site heading through 'Rue' The minature railway is excellent, around an hour to St Valery which is a beautiful town on the edge of Somme's bay.

Bagatelle Parc - Medium sized theme park, great for young and old, around 25 min drive. About 25 Euro for adult entry.

Tip - Make sure you bring your wet towels in overnight, we had ours stolen from outside our room! I reported this to reception who said that others had reported theft that same day.

Summary:
We did enjoy our holiday at Belle Dune (not sure if that came across) but found that you had to spend quite a bit of money for extra bits and bobs which all adds up. The setting is lovely, very rural and we found it very quiet even during the evening time. We felt this holiday village is very much aimed at the French tourist. Great location if you enjoy your golf. Would we go again? Maybe, but next time bring the oven, toaster and more towels..

Room Tip: If you want to be going back and forth to your room from the centre then avoid the Beach houses. If...
