“A New Year to remember”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

This was our first trip to The Swan at Ascott and definitely won't be our last. The New Year's celebrations were brilliant with fantastic entertainment from the Swing Sisters and Tina Turner tribute, who had everyone on the dancefloor and even a few of us on stage.
The food was delicious, and had something to suit everybody.
The hosts were so welcoming and the environment was a perfect way to see in 2014.
It has been one of the best New Year's Celebrations, and we would both return without question.

We chose this pub for a post-Christmas break because we were looking to get away from it all and it didn't disappoint. Set in a beautiful Cotswold village opposite an ancient church, the Swan is as picturesque from without as it is welcoming and enjoyable from within.
We took a room on the first floor which was clean, spacious and warm, with a very new en-suite bathroom. The village may have a train station but it is very much off the beaten track and the room was perfectly quiet after the pub closed at around midnight, but even before that it wasn't a disturbance.
We dined at the pub one evening and found the food to be good, dependable fare, exactly what one would expect from a good pub: pies, roasts and salads, with nothing too fancy or exorbitant on the menu. There were also a few good local brews on offer from the excellent Hook Norton Brewery. breakfast was also very good: the full English served as a great basis for a day's sightseeing in Oxford and would be a good start to a day walking in the vicinity too.
While the accommodation, facilities and catering all ticked the right boxes, the most important factor was the friendly, helpful service that the landlord Richard and his team offered. We felt welcome from arrival to departure and I'd be happy to recommend The Swan to anyone looking for a great English country pub experience within a couple of hours of London.

Christmas Lunch at the Swan was a great experience for my Husband and I. There were about forty people there and the atmosphere was great, the food was excellent, 7 courses in all each beautifully presented and delicious, the tables were wonderfully set with chocolates, crackers, hats and fresh flowers, there was complementary sherry to start and port to finish, each course flowed perfectly from the beginning to the end enabling us to have a most relaxing and enjoyable lunch, we had a great time and would like to thank Richard and Michiel and there wonderful friendly staff for giving us a Christmas Day Lunch we won't forget. Congratulations
J & B

We asked if we could have sole use of the restaurant for my daughters 30th birthday, and although they didn't run the restaurant after 4.30 on Sunday kindly agreed. There were 18 of us and I have to say every course was delicious. Lovely hot filling soup for starters along with tempura veg (which my very fussy veggie daughter loved) and calamari. The main courses were lovely and filling and we all struggled to fit in the pudding, which was a shame as the cheese board was fantastic.

We had a warm welcome and good service and there was even 30th Birthday balloons on the table.

Thanks for a great time. We are off there for a burger tonight.

The Swan Inn at Ascott reopened in the summer under the new ownership of Richard and Michiel - two more pleasant and welcoming landlords would be hard to find.
There are several 'gastro-pubs' in the Cotswolds charging London prices, often for indifferent food and service. At the Swan you immediately feel welcome and whether it is for a drink, lunch or dinner, or overnight accommodation, you will get good food and service at reasonable prices. My family and friends have had Sunday lunch and the Tuesday curry dinner and both have been excellent meals.
For visitors to the Cotswolds, the Swan is a great location and a welcoming English village inn for a meal or a longer stay.

My boyfriend and I visited The Swan at Ascott about a month ago and were looking forward to experiencing it as we had heard good reviews, however, as far as the food and some of the service went, it really didn't live up to them.
On entering the pub, we were greeted by two very smiley young girls who were happy to help and very welcoming. However, we soon felt like we were more of a hindrance, than a customer, when the man in charge and another waitress, found out we had come for dinner, but hadn't booked. After some deliberation between them, we were seated in the bar. We would have preferred to be in the restaurant, but unfortunately were not given that option, even though it looked like there were available tables and it was 8:30pm, so I can't imagine many more people would be coming in for dinner. After perusing the menu and making our decision, an older gentleman with glasses, who we hadn't seen on entering, came to take our order. Like the two young girls he was very smiley, chatty and welcoming. He took our drink and food order and we were off.
We didn't order starters, just mains. I ordered the Hake and my boyfriend the steak (medium, with peppercorn sauce). When they arrived, one of the young girls who had greeted us on arrival bought it to us and before letting us start asked us if we needed anything else or wanted any sauces; my boyfriend asked for ketchup and it was with him within 2 minutes (very efficient!) I was a little surprised with the size of my dish (rather small) but tucked in anyway. My boyfriends dish, however, was disappointing for him as his streak was more well done than medium and the portion of chips were not what you would expect at a country pub, more of a 5* London restaurant (petite). Once finished, our plates were cleared by the gentleman who had take our order and we were given dessert menus. I decided against having one, but my boyfriend ordered 3 scoops of ice cream (vanilla, mango and pistachio). Again, the order was taken quickly and with a smile. However, the attentiveness of some of the front of house staff didn't seem to be the same in the kitchen and after twenty minutes of waiting, we decided to cancel our order as, he had lost his appetite for it and we just wanted to get our bill and go. The older gentleman and one of the young girls were very apologetic and asked if there was anything they could do, which was lovely and appreciated, but we wanted to go, especially as I wasn't feeling great. We got the bill, paid and left. On paying, the gentleman in charge wasn't particularly chatty and, like on our arrival, we felt more of a hindrance. We thanked the 3 members of staff that had been attentive and friendly all night and left.
The next morning and woke up and wasn't very well at all. I had felt fine all day, all evening, but after our evening meal I didn't feel right at all or throughout the night. It's such a shame as from the outside the pub looks lovely, and thanks to some of the members of staff it can be very welcoming, but there are more than a few things that need to be looked at, and we can't say we will be returning anytime soon.

Dear Elizabeth T.
Many thanks for your comments regarding your visit to The Swan Inn, Ascott under Wychwood.
You will please note that the majority of reviews that we have received, to date, have been super - which we thank all contributors for.
Your review mainly deals with our food - you say towards the end "...but after our evening meal I didn't feel right at all or throughout the night". having already said "I had felt fine all day, all evening".
We - like most venues - take a pride in our cooking - and welcome comments from customers but find it rather strange that you haven't contacted us at all - and told us such - just, seemingly waited over a month to post such a notice on tripadvisor. Inevitably, having received so many good comments from so many people there are a few that just want to take a 'pop' at us.
We welcome every customer who comes through our doors - we need to, especially in today's climate. All customers are offered the choice of a table in the restaurant without question - we actually prefer people to eat in the restaurant rather than the bar - however this is, of course, the choice of the customer. Most customers, we have found, prefer a little gap between main courses and desserts - so as to not (or certainly by us) rush their meals. We are sorry that you felt our chip portion too small - they are served in a 'bucket' and all customers get the same. We find in many cases plates are cleared and not all chips (shoe-string fries actually) are eaten as we do give very generous portions and most say they have too many. I also doubt that many 5* London restaurants serve their fries in a bucket! We are very aware that in Britain - as in general certainly not on the Continent - customers tend to refrain from expressing their feelings at the table to staff - but if you had required even more chips than provided we would have been delighted to have provided them on the house!

This old and typical pub is in a quiet friendly village well positioned in the Cotswolds for Stratford Upon Avon, Blenheim Palace, Bibury, Burford and Oxford. Recent refurbishment in accomodation and throughout is first class. It is bound to become a hot spot for locals and tourists.

The food is to die for which is not a surprise as the Chef team from the successful nearby Tollgate in Kingham have moved in with style.

Curry Night on Tuesday is very popular with great choices and good value and we certainly need to go back to try another one of the many options. Try the Buffalo ice cream afterwards..it is the best we have ever had.

We 've also tried Sunday Lunch which was delicious especially the roast beef which is served in the middle of a gigantic yorkshire pudding!

The prices are the best in the area and the service by the owners Richard and Mikiel clearly love what they are doing which shows in the high quality of the food and such friendly and welcoming service. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Room Tip: Don't just stay one night you'll regret it.
