If you don't mind the flies and a lot of sheep, Casa Catherine is a perfect little place to stay. A nice little village surounded by olive groves and silence and hosted by a really welcoming Flemish family. Breakfast is good and Twiggy and Filip are seriously good cooks. Try it and you'll love it!

We spent a lovely time at Casa Catherine in the hart of Andalusia.
The hosts Filip and Twiggy welcomed us with a welcome drink which was a fantastic experience. The bedrooms are comfortable, clean and quiete. A nice buffet breakfast with fresch orange juse and fresch fruit salade in the sun every morning was the start of a beautiful day. After a long day spending in the area we enjoyed our diners of daiiy fresch cooked fish or meat. cooked by Filip or Twiggy. Honestly this is the place to be if you like to enjoy the sun, the relaxing and at the end a good diner.

My partner and I have recently returned from a lovely and relaxing five day stay at the beautiful Casa Catherine in Andalucia. We found Filip, Twiggy and their family very friendly and hospitable hosts (and great cooks too!).
The homely Casa Catherine is situated on the far edge of the tiny rural hamlet of Venuela not far from Alhama de Granada (10 minutes drive away). To us town-folk-tourists, life in the village felt to take place at wonderfully relaxing pace and after a while we also began to adopt the 'no need to rush around' attitude; a real stress-buster for those with hectic home lives!
We loved sitting at the patio, taking in the tranquil hillside views with a long cooling drink, with the great company of our hosts to watch the friendly farmer bring his sheep to and from pasture morning and evening (we were also lucky enough to see a newborn lamb one morning). It felt like relaxation on a plate!
In contrast to the time we spent chilling out around Casa Catherine we also did manage get ourselves active and out and about to explore the surrounding area. There are a wealth of places to discover in the vicinity, however as we'd adopted the 'no need to rush around' attitude we ran out of time before we ran out of places to see and explore.
Our hosts were very knowledgeable about the area and made some great suggestions for places we could visit. The nearby Alhama de Granada is a lovely town with an interesting history (we took the free tour one morning run by the local the tourist information office). We explored up and down the incredibly steep and narrow beautifully whitewashed streets and into the church to get a feel for it's past. Another day we ventured into the deep canyon beside which the town sits to take in the natural wonders of the area. The walk was picturesque and gave us a very rewarding afternoon, yet as it was the middle of July and very hot indeed (to us!) we were further rewarded by a cool drink and lovely meal at the restaraunt a short walk from the end of the canyon (near the fishery).
We found Lake Bermajales (15/20 minutes drive away) to be the perfect antidote to being over-heated and not as fit as we'd like to think we are! Here we quite literally 'chilled-out'; reading and dozing on the shore taking a quick dip or going for a swim in the clean waters surrounded by beautiful views of the hills with the mountains in the distance.
We discoverd many lovely little villages at which to stop for refreshments and contemplation with friendly and helpful staff to assist us in our ordering (though I recommend a phrase book as English was rarely spoken).
Being so close by (45 minutes drive) we could not miss seeing the historical sights offered in Granada. The Alhambra palace was well worth a visit as were the other historical areas of this incredibly interesting city.
If I were to try sum up our trip in Andalucia I'd say in general we strayed off the well-beaten tourist track to experience something different of Spain to what we were used to (the Costas).
We were rewarded by gaining wonderful memories of our exporation of a relatively hidden and beautiful place and the lovely people we met there.
